Description

Assist with the coordination and implementation of strategies and activities designed to promote student success and belonging.  The student intern will work collaboratively with the Director of Student Success and Belonging, the Bilingual Student Success Coach, Ivy Achieves leads, and the Diversity Council to ensure that students in the Columbus Campus service area feel engaged and experience a sense of belonging. The student intern will reach out to a caseload of students to help them connect with appropriate college resources including Academic Advising, Career Link, Ivy Cares, Disability Support Services, Student Life, etc. The student intern will also assist with planning and working college and community events related to the areas of diversity, equity, and belonging.

The internship for Student Success and Belonging is a part-time nine-month academic year appointment. The student intern will work approximately 20 hours per week. Supervision is provided by the Director of Student Success and Belonging and/or the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Outreach to a caseload of students via email, phone, and text message.
  • Become a resource to students regarding campus and community resources and events.
  • Attend Diversity Council meetings and assist with planning and attending campus and community events.
  • Utilize reports provided to confirm that students in the Commit to Finish program are meeting requirements and conduct follow-up outreach as necessary.
  • Assist with compiling and presentation of data.
  • Schedule student appointments with the appropriate area including Advising, Career Link, etc.

The above list of duties is not an exhaustive list.  Other duties logically associated with the position may be assigned.

Qualifications

A successful candidate must be currently enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College or another accredited higher education institution.  Preference will be given to those with seeking a degree in human services, social work, psychology/counseling, health education, or other related fields.  In addition, the following are required professional competencies:

Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and substantial work experience in the following areas:

  1. Communication. The student intern must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with diverse groups of individuals at all levels of the community.
  2. Neutrality and confidentiality. The student intern must remain non-judgmental and exercise independent judgment and prudence in dealing with sensitive, confidential matters. The intern must maintain strict confidentiality, and demonstrate the ability to treat sensitive or confidential information appropriately.
  3. Problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic thinking. The student intern must be able to work with those in need to clarify problems, gather, and analyze relevant information, and provide appropriate options of services and resources.
  4. Composure and presentation. The student intern should maintain a professional demeanor, should have strong presentation skills, and should be able to organize and communicate information to groups of varying size and hierarchal levels in the organization.
