Mechanical Design Engineer Intern - Job description

We are looking for a part-time, Mechanical Design Engineer Student to join our team. The ideal candidate will be pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree with an understanding in mechanical knowledge and proficiency in software such as SolidWorks and Microsoft Office. This is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for engineering and problem-solving while also being energized by new product innovation and development in various markets.

In this entry-level career role, you will be responsible for supporting the engineering manager currently designing managing projects from concept stage to market. This includes concepting design ideas, modeling parts in SolidWorks, testing prototypes, sourcing suppliers for components, quoting parts and assemblies, setting up production assembly stations, and ending with assembly instructions for new products. To be successful in this role, you will be responsible for supporting the engineering department by working with other departments to support current and future products including customer service, marketing, purchasing, and production.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES & SKILLSET: Mechanical Design Engineer will have the following:

  • Concepting Designs and Features of New Consumer Products
  • Familiarity with Material Selection for End Use Consumer Products
  • 3D Modeling in SolidWorks
  • Creating Technical Engineering Drawings
  • Quoting and Researching Suppliers
  • Good Communication – Internally and with Suppliers
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
  • Workspace Organization
  • Creativity with emphasis in Thoroughness and Attention to Detail in Design
  • Testing Prototypes
  • Setting up in-house production practices and processes
  • Supporting Projects and Timelines – Project Management
  • Supporting All Current Products and Processes
  • SolidWorks Modeling Proficiency
  • Basic Understanding of Part Tolerancing and the Cost of Precision/Accuracy in Manufacturing
  • Ability to Produce and Read Technical Engineering Drawings
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing including but not limited to:
  • Sheet Metal Fabrication
  • Welding
  • CNC Machining
  • Injection Molding
  • Metal Forming

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Mechanical Design Engineer Intern will have the following:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 2 years educational experience in mechanical engineering, design, fabrication, new product development, or another similarly related field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully to team members including entry and upper-level management within the organization.
  • Active listening skills and ability to adjust messages to audience level.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills (proactive and reactive)
  • Ability to identify alternative actions, set appropriate priorities and identify creative and practical solutions.
  • Assist and support business goals that coincide with the company business plan.
  • Maintain good rapport with our suppliers
  • Basic project management skills
  • Perform special assignments as requested by Management.
