Description

As a Design Engineer Intern at Barletta, you will have an opportunity to learn and provide hands-on support in the design and development of innovative, high-quality pontoon boats. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the development and implementation of bringing creative concepts to life, ensuring that our boats meet and exceed industry standards and customer expectations.

Responsibilities

  1. Conceptualization and Design: Support the conceptualization and design of pontoon boats from ideation to production, considering factors such as aesthetics, functionality, performance, and manufacturability.
  2. CAD Modeling and Drafting: Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed 2D and 3D models of boat components, structures, and systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance with design specifications.
  3. Structural Analysis and Simulation: Conduct structural analysis and simulation using engineering software to assess the strength, stability, and performance of boat designs under various operating conditions.
  4. Material Selection and Specifications: Research and select appropriate materials for boat construction, considering factors such as durability, weight, cost, and environmental impact. Develop material specifications and collaborate with suppliers to ensure quality and consistency.
  5. Prototype Development and Testing: Work closely with prototyping teams to build and test physical prototypes of boat designs, evaluating performance, functionality, and user experience. Iterate on designs based on test results and feedback.
  6. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, manufacturing, marketing, and sales, to align on design requirements, timelines, and project milestones. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to convey design concepts, progress, and challenges.
  7. Regulatory Compliance: Learn about key processes to ensure that boat designs comply with relevant regulatory standards and certifications, such as those set by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), United States Coast Guard (USCG), and industry-specific regulations.
  8. Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and customer feedback to drive continuous improvement in boat design processes, products, and features.
  9. Safety: Supports a Barletta Safe culture by adhering to and advocating for the safest behaviors and proactively identifies opportunities to mitigate job-related risks and hazards.

Qualifications

  • Students currently engaged in Mechanical / Design Engineering or similar course of study.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools. Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, including structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, and materials science.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to translate conceptual ideas into practical, manufacturable designs.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Passion for boating and a commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative products that delight customers.
