Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesâ successes.
These are their stories.
Karoline Coryea is a freshman at Miami University (of Ohio). She completed her internship with the Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce while at school at Northeastern High School. After graduation, she plans to pursue event planning for nonprofits.
Indiana INTERNnet: What are you majoring in? What made you interested in pursuing that?
Karoline Coryea: I am majoring in Marketing and minoring in American Studies. I fell in love with Marketing while I was interning at the Chamber, and I fell in love with American Studies when I took a class at Miami.
IIN: We understand you did quite a bit of event planning. What did you learn from the annual dinner, School is Cool and Chamber Network Nights?
KC: I learned how complicated it is to throw such big events. With the Annual Dinner we had to start planning for it a year in advance, secure a big enough venue and promote it appropriately throughout the year. School is Cool was very interesting to be a part of because I learned a lot about the schools within my district. Chamber Network Nights were always so much fun and my favorite one was a scavenger hunt in downtown Richmond, which I got to work with Katy Robinson (fellow Intern of the Year nominee) on making awesome maps for people to follow.
IIN: The Chamber asked you back for a summer internship after your internship during the school year was completed. What did that mean to you?
KC: It meant the world to me! I felt so honored to be asked to come back, and it was a fantastic experience.
IIN: Many students donât begin to think about internships until they are in college. Why did you see value in doing an internship while in high school?
KC: I have to compliment Mrs. Scruggs who was instrumental in helping me gain an internship with the Chamber. She was the one that suggested I look into an internship my senior year, and really helped me with that process.
