Rory Gilmore, from the popular show Gilmore Girls, understands the stress of a busy school schedule. With the Netflix reboot of the show coming this week, Iâd like to present the life struggles that Rory and Lorelai experienced on screen, but students face in real life.
That looming feeling of approaching finals
Weâve all been there. Fall semester is coming to an end, internships tasks are multiplying, and the stress is increasing. While some (lucky) students thrive on the heavy workload, others dislike everything about it. Try scheduling study sessions a few weeks in advance so those finals donât sneak up on you!
If youâre really struggling to make it through the end of the semester, find things to look forward to in your life. If you have an internship, find aspects of it that youâre excited about (learning a skill, meeting new connections, free birthday cake in the breakroom, etc.). The same goes for college, find excitement in finishing a project early or visiting family during Thanksgiving break.
Struggling to balance everything, including your sleep schedule
Itâs obvious that coffee is the fuel that keeps students going, but there is a limit. You should never use coffee as a substitute for sleep. If youâre finding it difficult to get a full nightâs sleep, squeeze in a nap during the day. Your crazy schedule is only temporary, once you graduate it should be much more manageable. However, in case of an energy emergency: grab a cup of coffee from Lukeâs Diner for a pick-me-up, not a means for survival.
That Monday Feeling
Ugh, Mondays… If youâre really dreading the upcoming week, set aside a few hours on Sunday to relax, or plan a fun activity for Monday evening to get you through the day. Binge-watching your favorite season of Gilmore Girls, or eating dinner with your friends will give you the boost you need to power through the week. Keep repeating this process until the dread of Mondays disappears.
Coming home after a long day of school and internship
When I was a student and an intern, I had a backpack for school and a separate bag for my internship. It was exhausting hauling around two bags, a lunch box and whatever else I needed each day. If you can, try to consolidate as much as possible and pack light. Evaluate what items you actually need each day, and remove the unnecessary items. Avoid looking like Rory at the end of the day.
Food cravings
With your crazy, busy schedule it may be difficult to find time to eat, let alone eat healthy. You might skip a meal or grab a cheeseburger on the go, but remember a balanced diet is best! If possible, plan your meals ahead of time to save time and money. Pinterest has thousands of meal planning ideas to choose from. If youâre craving a taco, try eating a taco salad or burrito bowl instead!
Good luck on your upcoming finals!
