Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on February 8, 2017, at the 11th Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.
These are their stories.
Nick Maines is junior at Marian University, expecting to graduate in May 2018. He interned with Northwestern Mutual as a college financial representative.
Indiana INTERNnet: What made you interested in studying marketing?
Nick Maines: I decided to pursue this major, because I might want to go into sales someday. Marketing is very broad and it’s in all industries, so it gives me a lot of options in terms of jobs after college.
IIN: How was your internship with Northwestern Mutual?
NM: My internship with Northwestern Mutual was very challenging, yet rewarding at the same time. It allowed me to develop as a young business professional, while learning the ins and outs of the insurance industry. My favorite aspect was that I essentially made my own hours, and was able to pick up key communication skills that will help me in my future business endeavors.
IIN: What was a major project you completed?
NM: I obtained my insurance license, so I dealt primarily with selling life insurance to clients. Northwestern Mutual also sells health insurance, disability income and long-term care, and I was able to gain some experience doing that as well.
IIN: Was this your first internship?
NM: No, this was not my first internship. I interned with Special Olympics Indiana during the spring semester of my sophomore year. I chose to complete another internship because I wanted to gain more experience within a different industry, and I knew it would allow me to grow and develop my skills as a business student.
IIN: What are your plans and goals post-graduation?
NM: As of now, I don’t have exact plans post-graduation. I hope to be working within a marketing department for a company in downtown Indianapolis, hopefully doing some sort of market research or data analysis.
