Sunny and warm weather make for a perfect day to give back to the community. On April 24, Allison Gaffney and I volunteered at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) as a part of the 500 Festivalās study trip program. Local fourth graders travel to the racetrack and participate in multiple educational activities. This free program has been around for many years, I even participated in it when I was in fourth grade!
As study trip guides, it was our duty to lead the students, teachers and chaperones around IMS to eight activity stations. Each station had a themed activity or lesson, and was conducted by 500 Festival Princesses, staff members or volunteers. Most stations were about the race: driver equipment, race flags, timing and scoring, and the various career opportunities available.
Since this was an educational field trip, there were activities that focused on mathematics, health and history. Students participated in a numbers activity that involved ticket sales, budgeting, and calculating profits and losses. Health and nutrition is a very important part of racing, as drivers must be in good health and physical fitness. Students learned about the importance of stretching before any physical activity, and got up and moving with a few pushups, crabwalks and planks! Next, they were given free range of the IMS Museum. Students explored the multiple rooms filled with IndyCars, trophies and photographs. While the cars on display were off-limits, there was one car designated to ātest driveā and pose for a photo.
There were plenty more opportunities for selfies and group shots, of course! Students gathered in front of the iconic Pagoda for a big group photo. Then, they ventured inside the track for the most memorable experience that can be had at IMS: kissing the bricks! Students, teachers, chaperones and study trip guides all partook in this experience.
All in all, it was a fun and educational experience for the students and us, as well! Thank you to the IMS and 500 Festival for the opportunity to volunteer. We will definitely be at the race next month, and may volunteer next year!
