Indiana’s Talent Gap and Brain Drain/Gain Workshop

Indiana INTERNnet, Purdue University, Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Lilly Endowment, Inc., and Indiana Commission for Higher Education have joined forces to coordinate Indiana’s Talent Gap and Brain Drain/Gain Workshop held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Human Resources Conference & Expo on April 26th from 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The workforce survey conducted in 2016 by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce found that 45% of respondents had left jobs unfilled in the past year due to under-qualified applicants. This is an increase from 39% in 2014. For the 2013-14 through 2015-16 academic years, 50% of bachelor-level graduates at Purdue University who were from Indiana found employment outside the state. Further, for these same years, only 14% of graduates from other states and 20% of international bachelors-level graduates stayed in Indiana. These are symptoms of a set of challenges facing the state. The challenges are not new and many efforts by government, business and industry, non-governmental organizations and educational institutions are underway in an attempt to address them.

This workshop will frame and detail the challenges, solicit a variety of viewpoints (including industry, higher education and recent graduates), and bring the range of stakeholders together to formulate ideas and plans to address these issues.

Individual registration is $49. A continental breakfast and seat at the 2017 Human Resources Awards Luncheon is included in the registration cost. The conference, workshop and luncheon will be held at the Indianapolis Marriott East (7202 E 21st St, Indianapolis, IN 46219).

The workshop will begin with the morning general session, Making Indiana a Magnet for Jobs and Talent: Responding to the Challenge. Sue Ellspermann, Ph.D., president of Ivy Tech Community College, and Mark Ferrara, vice president of talent management at Eli Lilly and Company will frame the overall issues facing the State of Indiana and discuss the efforts that have been made to address the “talent gap” and “brain drain” (and foster “brain gain”). Suresh V. Garimella, Ph.D., executive vice president for research and partnerships at Purdue University, will be the moderator.

Attendees will move to a breakout session for the remainder of the workshop. The next panel discussion will address characterizing the skills gap, creating attractive jobs and equitable distribution across the state. The panel will consist of:

A subsequent panel discussion will follow that addresses how to attract talent to Indiana. Recent graduates share their experiences and reasons for deciding whether to leave or stay. This panel will consist of:

Following the workshop, attendees will enjoy the Human Resources Awards Luncheon with keynote speaker: Andrea Moore-Butcher, CPLP, CEC, vice president of talent development at DEFENDERS. Moore-Butcher is an engaging and dynamic leader and speaker; her strengths include bringing together groups of people to execute on a clear strategy.
