Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on February 26, 2019 at the 13th Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon. Though the event is over, and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.
These are their stories.
John Daugherty graduated from University of Saint Francis in December 2018 with a degree in Business Management. He completed an internship with Shambaugh and Son.
Indiana INTERNnet: What made you interested in pursuing a Business Management degree?
John Daugherty: I am a graduate of the University of Saint Francis with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. I have always been fascinated with the different areas of Business. In order to learn a little bit about each aspect I wanted to major in something that would allow me to get a little bit of knowledge in each area. That is where Business Management came into play. With a business degree, you can enter any field and be able to run a company. A business degree can be used in healthcare, construction, or in a Fortune 500 company. You learn how to run a company form the ground up, and can apply what you learn across the board. I am currently finishing out my last year of football and obtaining my MBA. I will be done in December of 2019.
IIN: Describe your internship experience with Shambaugh and Son. What were your favorite aspects?
JD: My internship experience with Shambaugh and Son was absolutely great. I loved every aspect of it and the people and relationships I was able to make along the way. I was truly happy to go into work every day because each day brought something new. I worked from the ground up, from the warehouse to the front office. Also, I formed several great relationships while working there.
IIN: What was the most challenging project you were assigned?
JD: I cannot pinpoint it to one specific project, but every day I was involved in something new that allowed me to think through the result of the project. I helped complete a variety of tasks which challenged me to be flexible on a daily basis.
IIN: Was this your first internship? Why did you choose to complete an internship?
JD: This was my first true internship, and I chose to do an internship so that I was able to coordinate football and classes with the job. I find myself to be someone that is always wanting to learn and obtain new information, so by choosing internships it offers opportunities in different areas.
IIN: What are your future plans and career goals?
JD: I am not too sure what the future holds for me, but I am currently focused on finishing my last year of football while obtaining my MBA. My career goals are to find something that I am truly passionate about to set the path for the rest of my life. I hope to grow with each experience to become a valuable asset in the business world.
