First day on the internship

Today marks Day 2 for me as the Marketing and Special Events intern with Indiana INTERNnet. I just read an excellent blog post by Megan Schuman, last summer’s intern, and by the sound of things, I’m in for an incredible experience!

This will serve as my eighth internship, so I am a huge believer in the benefits and take-aways these experiential learning opportunities provide, and I am beyond excited to talk about this for the next several months. I know I am indebted to all of my internship supervisors and mentors for the great experiences they afforded me and all the wisdom they passed to me.

Internships can be downright fun. I’ve had the opportunity to work for the 500 Festival, the Indiana State Fair and Sen. Richard Lugar’s office in Washington, D.C. I gained practical field knowledge, but I also have a host of fun memories from these experiences, like watching a U.S. Senate vote in person, hand-milking a cow for the first (and probably last) time and even dressing up as Boo-Boo the bear and entertaining kids!

I can already tell the Indiana Chamber is going to be a great place to work as well. The Indiana INTERNnet staff does great work on behalf of employers and interns. Remaining true to what they promote, I know I have several projects to look forward to that will further equip me for the beginning of my career. I’ll get blogging and social media experience; I’ll get to help plan and execute the IMPACT Awards Luncheon; I’ll get to put together research and metric reports. Most importantly, I get to work with seasoned mentors and learn from their professionalism and expertise.

And that’s what internships are all about; they’re a give-and-take between students and employers. Hands-on learning is critical for students, and that extra set of hands is an enormous benefit for employers. Finding the right internship(s) for you will do wonders for your skill level and confidence level, and Indiana INTERNnet is the absolute best place to start.

Internships have played such a key role in my education and career preparation, so I look forward to writing for you, sharing stories with you, and doing what I can to promote internships in Indiana.
