Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā successes.
Ā These are their stories.
Katy Robinson is a student at Butler University studying Strategic Communications: PR & Advertising and minoring in Digital Media Productions. She plans to graduate in 2017. Learn more about her internship with the Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce.
Indiana INTERNnet: You produced marketing materials for several Chamber events and initiatives. How did it feel to be given that responsibility as an intern?
Katy Robinson: The Chamber gave me a lot of freedom and independence to use my own skills, which allowed me to get creative and think outside of the box. Because of this freedom, I was able to improve my time management and communication skills. I would send my employers the projects I was working on in a timely manner in order to get feedback and edit any changes they wanted.

IIN: What did you enjoy about working in Richmond? Did you learn anything interesting about the city that you didnāt already know?
KR: Even though I have lived in Richmond my entire life, I learned so many new things about the community by interning at the Chamber. I was able to network with business professionals and learn more about what individuals are doing to help make Richmond a great place to live. Growing up in Richmond, I never visited the downtown area. As an intern at the Chamber, I was able to discover and go to the wonderful locally-owned shops and restaurants. My internship made me see how much potential and growth is happening in my own community.
IIN: What do you enjoy about working in a nonprofit environment?
KR: I loved how it was a very teamwork-oriented environment. For example, we were always helping one another to complete a task, which led to team results rather than individual results. We really became a family!
IIN: We understand you took on a mentor role with Karoline during your internship. Why was that important to you?
KR: I loved being able to share my own skills and experience with Karoline. She was so eager to learn and it gave me the amazing opportunity to share what I know. This mentor role was definitely not a one-way street, though. Karoline taught me so much and asked me questions that helped me grow as a student, employer, and overall individual.
