First generation college student trailblazing career path
Firdas Abamislimova is a senior at IUPUIās Kelley School of Business. She is studying Management, HR and International Studies.
My name is Firdas, and I am the first member of my family to go to college!
My family moved to the United States 10 years ago when I was only 13 years old. Ā At the time, I already knew that going to college would be a given for me. My parents gave up all their life savings and their loved ones in order to move to the land of opportunities. You see, my parents never had the opportunity to go to college, so they have always dreamed about being able to give the opportunity to their children. Where I am from, going to college was a dream that came true only for the wealthy. Finding a job upon graduation was for those of true Russian ethnicity. Why, you may …
Despite heavy course load, internship is worth it
Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, aĀ staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.
Stress. Overload. Pressure. Worry.
These are a few words that come to mind when I think about working 20 hours a week and taking 18 credit hours this semester.
You know what, though?
Experience. Mentor. Learning. Opportunity. Thankful.
These are a few words that come to mind when I think about my internship.
Still to this day, an entire month after my first day, I am shocked that I get to work at Milliner & Associates for a whole semester. This is an amazing opportunity.
I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and get home at 9:30 p.m. from my evening classes. I have never had problems with time management before. Iāve also never really had a full schedule like this before either. It is hard finding time …

Indiana INTERNnet: You contributed several articles and reports to Seedstock EDGE, one of which was determined to be the most memorable article published, and you also designed many pages of advertising. What was your favorite article to write and why?
Holly Hopkins: The first article I wrote for the magazine is the one that always comes to mind titled, Show Gilt to Sow. I think a lot of it being my favorite has to do with the fact that I remember brainstorming the idea with the team, putting together my source contact list and even shooting the photos at the farm of one of our breeders. Then, watching it go …

IIN: Tell me about your academic path and how some of your other internships supplemented that.
MU: I majored in Classical Studies with the intention of being a foreign languageĀ teacher. But, as college set in and I started thinking about career paths, I realized how competitive Classical Studies can be. So, I thought about other opportunities that would be impactful on people lives.
I realized financial services is something almost everyone needs guidance with. I was hired for the Northwestern Mutual summer program selling life, property and casualty insurance. I utterly failed at this; I’m not a very good salesman.
After graduating from IU Bloomington, I struggled with what to …

IIN: You read prints, studied parts and worked with operators to optimize the designs for production gauges and minimize costs. How was this experience?
BB: It was a great experience. At one point, we were having a significant amount of nonconforming parts, and I was asked to investigate and see if I could determine the source of the nonconforming pieces. I took multiple measurements and tracked an entire batch of parts through their production process. I recorded all dimensions and checked each piece with its go-nogo gauge. I noticed that in several instances, the results of the measurements would be within specification, but would fail the go-nogo gauge.

Internship helps student grow professionally and personally
This is a guest blog by Katie Besse, a student at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She was an intern for Mommyās Haven in Lowell, Ind.
My internship with Mommy’s Haven has been a rewarding one.
I started my internship with this not-for-profit about six months ago. I have a variety of responsibilities. We do everything from fundraising to counseling. I am a counseling intern with the organization, but do so much more than I expected.
Our organization houses homeless, pregnant mothers and their children. We provide job training, counseling, school assistance, help with attaining legal aid, medical services and government assistance. We also have many programs to teach these women how to care for not only their children, but themselves. We pride ourselves on getting these women back on their feet, and into society as active members.
During my internship, we helped several women find jobs and assistance. One instance that …

This is a guest blog by Carly Painter, a student at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) majoring in business administration. She was an intern for Medical Risk Institute in Terre Haute.
You never know what one meeting can lead to.
In October 2013, I was introduced to Michael J. Sacopulos, a medical law attorney practicing in Terre Haute. After meeting him, Michael offered me an opportunity to work as an intern for his company, Medical Risk Institute, to gain experience in the medical field.
Medical Risk Institute, works to inform healthcare providers where liability risks originate and how to reduce those risks. As a student who is planning on obtaining a Masters of Healthcare Administration (MHA), I was instantly attracted to this opportunity and saw it as an experience that would help prepare me for my future career.
I was absolutely right about this.
At my first meeting with Michael, …

Internship reveals new career path
This is a guest blog by Melinda Frazee, a student at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). She is finishing a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She recently completed an internship with Crawfordsville High School.
Like many interns, I went into my internship questioning my qualifications. I was not sure what I would be able to take away from the program as I am only an undergrad in psychology. But I learned so much about the job, and even about myself!
During my internship with Crawfordsville High School, I was able to take charge of four groups of teenagers and hold discussion hours where we would discuss topics focused on diversity. Through this experience, I learned that I am flexible and a fast learner, as this was a completely new and somewhat uncomfortable situation. Iām proud that I was able to make it work. The ability to roll …
