‘I had the opportunity to not just observe, but participate’

‘IThis is a guest blog by Aleah Wieland, a student at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). She recently completed an internship with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Terre Haute Police Department.

In the spring of 2014, while attending Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, I had the opportunity to intern for the Terre Haute Police Department. I specifically interned with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). I learned what detectives do on a daily basis, and I was given the opportunity to not just observe, but participate in a variety of day-to-day tasks.

The detectives of the Terre Haute Police Department CID are given many cases and tasks to keep them busy throughout the day. Each day, the detectives are assigned a case. These cases are assigned according to crime allegedly committed and the specialization of the detective (property crimes, violent crimes, white-collar crime, etc.). The steps necessary to either suspend or close …

Maximizing ROI (Return on Intern)

By Janet Boston, Executive Director, Indiana INTERNnet

“What you put in is what you get out” – we’re not mathematicians, but we do know this is the simple, tried-and-true formula for finding ROI (Return on Intern that is!).

Internships, at their best, function as a two-way street. In exchange for an employer providing a student with real-world working experience, the intern brings new energy, increased productivity, diverse knowledge and perspective, and much more.

We hear constantly from employers that they couldn’t keep up their level of productivity and quality of work without the help of interns. We have countless anecdotes of interns who went above and beyond, who saved the company money, who developed more efficient processes, who completed an important project that far surpassed expectations

And the national conversion rate for turning interns into full-time hires is 48.4%, according to NACE’s 2013 Internship & Co-op Survey.

An internship to explore ‘Plan B’

This is a guest blog by Jenette Seal, a student at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). She is finishing a major in Pre-Veterinary/Pre-Professional major. This past semester, she was an intern for SMWC’s undergraduate genetics class.

My internship was not a typical experience.

Many people take an internship to get a better idea of the career field they are interested in and gain firsthand knowledge doing the daily tasks associated with a given job. This was not my motivation, however.

My career goal is to attend veterinary school and either practice medicine or conduct research, both sides of veterinary medicine with which I am already familiar and experienced. My back-up plan, however, was to enroll in a graduate program for genetics if vet school didn’t pan out. I have an interest in genetics and decided if Plan A (vet school) didn’t work, I would pursue Plan B, being a geneticist.

Kristen Hay: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

This is a blog post by Kristen Hay, student at the University of Indianapolis. She was a social media intern with a writing focus at BLASTmedia.

BLASTmedia (BLAST) is not your typical internship experience—it’s above and beyond.

I started and completed the summer of my senior year at the University of Indianapolis as the social media intern with a writing focus on the social media team at BLAST.

Along with a great team, work environment and job tasks, I spent the summer working as a cashier at a retail job and tutoring in my school’s writing lab. While BLAST provided fun in the form of company outings, it also gave me the learning experience …

Sloan Jones: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

When you think of the fashion world, Indiana is probably not the place that comes to mind. But that didn’t stop Sloan Jones from developing her business and industry skills with the J. Crew Factory in Michigan City last summer.

Sloan started out as a part-time worker at the store. The next summer, she asked the store manager, Mariceli Paz, if she could be the store intern. With the help of an Indiana State University professor and Paz, they designed a manager-in-training program just for her.

“The internship allowed me to get a taste of what it takes to be a manager of a retail store,” Sloan explained. “Customer service, register duties, store events, …

Allison Bowman: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

Like a fine wine, some internships just get better with time. Allison Bowman will tell you that.

The Rose-Hulman senior has been an intern with BAE Systems every summer since graduating from high school in 2010. She performed a different rotation each year, broadening her skills and knowledge.

In her last year as an intern with BAE, she volunteered to be the sourcing intern, which in the past had rarely been a successful internship due to the lack of necessary skills and knowledge of the business. She volunteered for this post so she could see the big picture of the company as a whole and learn more about the business side.

“Allison was tasked …

Chris Jones: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

We aren’t huge fans of labels, but this is one we really like:

“Intern-to-Hire.”

And Chris Jones earned the label after graduating from Indiana State University in December 2013 and going to work immediately for Baldwin & Lyons following a successful internship with them.

Chris had his hands on many jobs within the company. He assisted in the development of the recently established project management office (PMO). He took over the management of the company’s top strategic project that changed the rating premiums for the largest account. Baldwin & Lyons also updated their ChangePoint system, and Chris co-managed that project.

“Chris is a motivated, personable project coordinator with strong management and organizational skills,” said …

Shawna McLetchie: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

When Shawna McLetchie began a grant-funded internship with the School of Medicine at IUPUI in 2012, she had minimal lab experience.

Now, she can “wow” you with all that she’s picked up.

“My time in Dr. [Janice] Blum’s lab has allowed me to learn techniques like ELISIA, Western Blot and qPCR,” she said. “I have also been able to communicate in science by the writing I am starting to do as well as presenting my research project in lab meetings or even just talking to Dr. Blum about my data.”

Scientific lab work was not the first career path she chose, however. She graduated from Hanover College in 2011 with a degree in biology, …

Sriram Jegatha Aranganathan: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

This is a blog by Sriram Jegatha Aranganathan, a senior studying Mechanical Engineering at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, IN.

During the summer of 2013, I had the pleasure of being an engineering intern at Oji Intertech in North Manchester, IN. Oji is a growing company that serves the automotive and industrial packaging industries. Their core competencies are centered on compression molding, die cutting, assembly and extrusion coating. I worked under the supervision of Aaron Highley, who also graduated from Indiana Tech and has been working at Oji for more than 2 years.

To begin my experience, I could not find an apartment for 3 months in North Manchester, so the best way to …

Ashlyn Sanders: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

This is a blog by Ashlyn Sanders, a senior Marketing & Operations Management and Psychology major at Indiana University, Bloomington.

During my sophomore year of college, I attended the business career fair at Indiana University and realized that day exactly where I wanted to work – ExactTarget.

Unfortunately, I was not chosen that year to be an intern, which encouraged me to work even harder to earn a spot the following year. One year later, however, I was chosen to be an ExactTarget Slingshot intern, and I had the time of my life that summer.

Carolyn Duong: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

Carolyn Duong’s dream is to be a dentist.

And she credits internships with helping her discover that dream.

Carolyn completed two internships with Steven Hollar, DDS and David VanWormer, DDS while studying at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. While at both offices, she was able to practice proper bedside manner, engage in conversation with the patients and learn more about various oral conditions and treatments.

“I saw how each dentist truly cared for his patients and was able to use his education, knowledge and training to help his patients be free of pain and oral disease,” Carolyn recalls. “I wanted the same for my own career.”

Drs. Hollar and VanWormer both commended her …

Millenials: A Lost Generation? No way!

This is an infographic submitted by Heidi Thompson discussing the positive characteristics Millenials have to offer.

Who Says You Can’t Go Home?

Jenn Meadows is a senior communications major studying at the University of Indianapolis. She is the UIndy PRSSA president and promotions director for WICR 88.7. Currently she’s interning in her hometown for Main Street Greensburg and the Decatur County Chamber of Commerce.

I’m a big fan of the NBC Show Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope, the main character played by Amy Poehler, was born and raised in the fictional town of Pawnee, Ind. Leslie is very passionate about the town she loves which carries over into her work as Director of the Parks Department – she’s writing a book, campaigning for new parks and planning a festival.

Like Leslie, I was born and raised in Indiana. However, I come from Greensburg, a small town in Southeastern Indiana. When I watch Parks and Recreation, I can’t help but think about my hometown.

Unlike Leslie, I couldn’t wait …

Summer fun: Student interns at children’s museum

This is a story that appeared in the ISU online newsroom.

By: Emily Sturgess, ISU Communications and Marketing Staff

Every day children fill the three stories of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum with chatter and laughter as they learn about farm life, play in the two-story tree house and laugh as they stand in the midst of the large bubble ring.

For senior public relations major Casey May, participating in this fun came her summer job.

“I just love that I can be myself here,” said May, a Terre Haute, Ind., native, who interned at the museum during the summer.

From being fingerprinted as a suspect during the CSI summer camp to dressing up as Princess Leia complete with hair buns and a toy gun, May enjoyed every opportunity to embrace the “little girl within” her.

“At any other internship I would have not be able to joke around, act …
