Women’s prison internship allows student to help others

When a student completes an internship, they will learn more about themselves and the career they pursue than they would only having classroom experience. I experienced this firsthand at my internship at the Rockville Correctional Facility, a womenâs prison.
My site supervisor was the Re-Entry/Transition Program Coordinator within the facility, who teaches the offenders how to be successful once they reenter society. She teaches a four-week course the offenders must complete upon their release. The class includes employment and housing information, as well as how to stay free from substance abuse and become financially stable. In order for the offenders to successfully complete the goals set for them within the course, my site supervisor also completes all of the necessary paperwork and keeps copies of their identification information. Police internship provides exhilarating experience

I am currently interning with the Sullivan Police Station and could not have asked to be placed in a better internship. I have had nothing but a great experience there and would recommend this internship to students.
Going into this internship I had no idea what to expect because I have never worked with police officers. I have also appreciated police officers because of what they try and do to keep society safe from danger. There is no better way of knowing what goes into the daily life of an officer than by riding along with one. A couple times a week I go down to the station and do ride-alongs to gain first-hand experience.

Internship brings out new skills and goals

It may seem strange for a professional writing major to apply to a social service agency for an internship, but in late August 2014 I stepped into the offices of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in Terre Haute to begin blending my passion for social justice with my freshly-honed communication skills.
CASA is a national organization that selects and trains volunteers to advocate for neglected and abused children who are part of the juvenile court system. Our volunteers fill a gap in that system by being the one adult who is constant in a childâs life. CASA speaks up for the best interests of children in court and as they navigate the community agencies involved in obtaining needed resources.

Connect and network during the holidays

The high spirits of the holidays bring out the social butterfly in me. There is just something about connecting with people face to face that makes the season brighter. Another networking event is coming up, and itâs a good time to go back over what I learned to prepare myself.
The first thing I learned was: Keep business cards handy and easily accessible (i.e. not at the bottom of a large purse). People almost immediately ask for a business card. I fumbled with my purse trying to find my cards occasionally, so this time I will put them in my pocket or bring a smaller bag. Also, I need to be a bit less prepared with business cards because they were so packed into my card holder, I could barely get them …

It is always so hard to say goodbye, especially when you have created memories and formed bonds with amazing people. My time at Milliner & Associates (M&A) has been wonderful, and I have learned so much from this experience.

Healthcare internship provides motivation to keep working

I was honored to observe and work at Providence Health Care. This organization helps rehabilitate those on Medicare or Medicaid back to their proper state after surgery. These procedures may be hip replacement or knee replacement. This facility works together to help people get back home to their families.
The main task of the facility is helping elderly sisters with whatever they need. Many of the sisters are strong and independent women, so it is difficult for them to understand they need help with daily tasks. These needs can be as simple as getting in the bed to using the restroom.

Graphic design internship bolsters classroom learning

I started my internship at Big Picture Data Imaging in Terre Haute in September 2014. Big Picture is a company that designs and prints graphic work for the community. As a graphic design major, interning here has really helped me to learn all the âbehind the scenesâ work in finishing a design project during the printing process.
During my internship, I learned how to be more efficient with my time and how to properly prepare projects for printing. In my college classes we are taught how to best layout a design and how to use the software to create the designs, but now armed with the knowledge I gained with my internship, I can much more professionally have the correct advanced settings ready for the printer to …
Internship popularity growing at Michiana high school

More Indiana schools are turning to innovative methods to engage students, with programs that incorporate STEM learning and unique field trips. Another way schools are expanding curriculum without breaking the budget is through internship programs.
The program at Elkhart Central High School has been around for more than 30 years and popularity is growing. Internship coordinator, Trudy Battjes says there are a wide variety of options, too.
“We have students at hospitals, at clinics, at dental offices at veterinarian clinics. We have them just about anywhere they want to further their education career,” said Battjes.
Seniors, like Alyssa Eubanks, block out three hours of the day, either in the morning or afternoon, to participate in the program. Alyssa works for credit at an area dental office from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The cold weather makes for a good excuse to stay busy inside. As the end of the semester approaches, itâs easy to slow things down and get into a routine at work. Maybe a new employer has already offered a spring internship, and energy is high about the fresh start coming up. However, there is still time to shake up the daily grind with asking for new projects or responsibilities.
I fell into the routine just a couple of weeks ago. I was doing payroll Mondays, updating the website Wednesdays and taking care of any leftover tasks Fridays. My time was filled up just fine with what I already had on my work to-do list.

Don’t let experience keep you from a job
Nothing should stop you from going after your dream internship or job.
That being said, professional experience does not always match job requirements, especially for new graduates. Even if you have little to no relevant experience or are applying for your first internship, you can make your resume stand out to potential employers. Focus on transferable skills: Let your past jobs and academic work speak for themselves. Skills like communication and collaboration are universal, and should be a focal point of your resume. On my mind are questions like, âWhat do I want to do?â âWhere do I apply?â âWhat if I end up at the wrong company?â Valid questions, all worth discussing, but who do I talk to?
Iâm lucky to have more than one mentor I truly trust. Regarding my job search though, I immediately go to my boss, Nicole. For other people, this may be a slippery slope talking to an employer about other employment opportunities, depending on the relationship. Thankfully, my boss is one of my most trusted mentors.

When I reflect on the short amount of time I have been at Milliner & Associates and all that I have learned so far, I can only be thankful.
I am a full time student, a cheerleader, a resident assistant, a girlfriend, a daughter, a friend â the list goes on and on. Yet, with my busy schedule, I am glad I took the risk of adding another commitment and deciding to take this internship.
Each week has taught me something new and has presented its own challenges, and I am so blessed to have such a great team behind me every step of the way.
