Carolyn Duong: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 5, 2014, at the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

Carolyn Duong’s dream is to be a dentist.

And she credits internships with helping her discover that dream.

Carolyn completed two internships with Steven Hollar, DDS and David VanWormer, DDS while studying at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. While at both offices, she was able to practice proper bedside manner, engage in conversation with the patients and learn more about various oral conditions and treatments.

“I saw how each dentist truly cared for his patients and was able to use his education, knowledge and training to help his patients be free of pain and oral disease,” Carolyn recalls. “I wanted the same for my own career.”

Drs. Hollar and VanWormer both commended her …

Nothing Stops Us From Honoring Internship Excellence

Keeping with the extreme winter weather patterns we’ve experienced this season, a snowstorm threatened to cancel the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon on Feb. 5.  But it’ll take more than that to keep us from honoring internship excellence! We had so many great stories to celebrate this year [be on the lookout for upcoming blog with winner stories]!

We were honored to have Gerry Dick, the president/managing editor of Grow INdiana Media Ventures and host of Inside INdiana Business, as our MC.  It was also our pleasure to have Peter Dunn, aka Pete the Planner, as our keynote speaker.  Pete is an award-winning comedian and an award-winning financial expert & comedian, author and radio host.

Pete talked about smart financial decisions to those in attendance.  He spoke about the importance of paying student loans immediately after graduating college and how to save 10% of every paycheck, which …

Feeling the IMPACT, Part II

Indiana INTERNnet hosted the seventh annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon on Feb. 6 at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. This year, we received more nominations than ever before, and it was a sold-out crowd. This is the final recap blog, focusing on the inspiring keynote address from Caroline Dowd-Higgins, particularly her words to employers. If you didn’t join us this year, we hope to see you in 2014!

Each year, the IMPACT Awards Luncheon is our opportunity to celebrate the significance of internships and spotlight the success stories. The focus is on the interns and how they are working to become the best and brightest in Indiana’s workforce. We were inspired by each story of accomplishment and believe our “Rock Star Interns” theme couldn’t have been more fitting.

This year in particular, though, we were reminded that it’s not only up to the interns to be rock …

Behind the Scenes of the IMPACT Awards

The IMPACT Awards Luncheon was a great way to see some of Indiana’s brightest interns, professionals and companies. I had the opportunity to learn why Indiana is such a great place to work and intern.

Caroline Dowd-Higgins’ speech was very moving and inspired me to create my own career plan path. She stated that 70% of employees are disengaged and unhappy. This really spoke to me because I’ve always believed in finding a career I will love going to each day and where I can make a difference.  Her speech was relatable–stating that it’s okay to change your mind and that we are each a “work in progress.”

As an intern myself, it was great to listen to three different rock star interns’ (high school, college and nontraditional) success stories. It demonstrates the work you put forth in internships directly affects your career path, making it that much easier to land …

Feeling the IMPACT, Part I

Indiana INTERNnet hosted the seventh annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon yesterday at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. This year, we received more nominations than ever before, and it was a sold-out crowd with 250 attendees. We’ll recap the event over the next few days. If you didn’t join us this year, we hope to see you in 2014!

Gerry Dick, host of Inside INdiana Business and IMPACT Awards emcee, tweeted us immediately following the event yesterday: “Don’t think there’s talent out there? Should have been at the IMPACT Awards. Wow. Impressive young professionals.”

We couldn’t agree more. Indiana is a hotbed of intelligence and talent, and that’s exactly what we celebrate every year at the IMPACT Awards Luncheon. This year, we were blown away by our rock star interns, employers and career development professionals.

College Intern of the Year Cody Adams made significant contributions to Roche’s HR …

Internships make a positive IMPACT

As fall internships are getting into full swing, we want to remind you of an opportunity to recognize the “Rock Star” you had the pleasure of working with this year. Maybe it’s your intern who exceeded expectations. Maybe it’s your employer or career coach who’s served as a great role model. We want to hear your success stories!

The IMPACT Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College, will be on Feb. 6, 2013, at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. We are now seeking nominations for these awards.

Several great stories surfaced from the IMPACT Awards last year.

Josh Bloxsome served as a systems engineering intern at Raytheon Technical Services. When several experienced engineers on that task had to be reassigned, Bloxsome’s role increased – and with great success. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Bloxsome is now CEO of Bloxsome Technology, …

Do you “know how 2 go” to career success?

This is a guest post written by Sara Hess, Campaign Coordinator and Editor at Learn More Indiana

Career success means different things to different professionals. Whether your industry defines success as products sold, media markets reached or something else entirely, there are smart steps students—in high school or college—can take to ensure success in their chosen field.

The KnowHow2GO Indiana 2012 campaign kicks off this summer with tips, step-by-step guides and goals for students of all ages to prepare them for college and career success. There’s even a fun contest to help you win $100 for college expenses!

Of course, one of the smartest things students can do to prepare for their future careers is to intern or job-shadow a professional. While interning will give you a deeper perspective on whether you’ll enjoy a specific career path, job-shadowing for just a day or afternoon can also give you a glimpse …
