Meet Chelsea DuKate, Central Indiana Regional Coordinator
In 2015, Indiana INTERNnet launched regional initiatives to increase the number of experiential learning opportunities available to Indiana students. Chelsea DuKate, founder and president of Red Envelope Consulting, is working with employers in Central Indiana at every stage of internship management from development to recruiting to evaluation.
Indiana INTERNnet: Why are internships more important than ever for employers?
Chelsea DuKate: Besides the general benefits of enhanced productivity and gaining a potential new diverse perspective, employers also have an opportunity to better engage with the early career community. Internship programs can serve as a âselection methodâ of sorts for full-time positions within their organization.
Studies have shown that interns hired full-time tend to be more loyal to that organization, which directly impacts labor and turnover costs. Other benefits include the company marketing that goes along with having interns and the increased name recognition and employment branding opportunities.

The Indiana Department of Education is currently reaching out to Businesses and Industries throughout the state to create awareness of College and Career Pathways. College and Career Pathways are an aligned sequence of courses that prepare high school students for college and career success.
The pathway plans focus on easing a studentsâ transition from high school to community college; from pre-college courses to post-secondary programs; and from community college to university or employment.
The Indiana Department of Education is also providing opportunities for companies to review the curriculum that has been developed. Their goal is to ensure the pathway plans designed for Indiana students meet employer needs in a growing and changing economy.
Input of business and industry representatives who understand the type of courses/content that will prepare our Indiana students upon graduation from high school is essential to their goals.

Southwest Education and Experience (E2) Initiative
Entry by Pat Patterson
As I have stressed numerous times, internships are invaluable experiences for both students and employers. After Indiana INTERNnet was established, some regions realized the necessity to create their own additional programs to promote the significance of internships.
From a statewide perspective, Indiana internships are being promoted by Indiana INTERNnet and its regional partners. In Mondayâs blog entry, I described how the Greater Fort Wayne Graduate Retention Program utilizes Indiana INTERNnet’s technology platform to facilitate internship matches among students and employers; The Southwest Indiana Education and Experience (E2) Initiative works to do the same in nine Southwestern counties.
Former Indiana INTERNnet intern, Anastasiya Elaeva, describes E2 in the August INTERNnetwork:
With just a few people on staff, the Southwest Indiana Education and Experience (E2) Initiative team, also known as the E2 initiative, has been enthusiastically working on boosting the region’s talent retention. Since its start in …

Scrubbinâ Down and Sprucinâ Indianaâs â250-Acre Houseâ
Entry by Courtney Sampson, Marketing and Communications Intern, Indiana State Fair
Rumor has it that weâre officially 432 hours away from opening day at the Indiana State Fair. Not that Iâm counting or anything, but for those of you who lack math skills (like me), 432 hours = 18 days. Can somebody say, âeeeks?!â
Well, have no fear, Fair fans. For some employees around here, State Fair prep is down to a science! After all, when you work here for 10, 15, 20, even 30+ years, you get into the groove of things after awhile. When youâre an intern, youâve got to pull yourself up by your bootstraps (flip-flops, in my case) and hang on for a fast-paced ride of a lifetime!
If youâre wondering what goes on pre-Fair, Iâve got a few pictures to share with you. My colleague, Kris Karol, snapped these shots late last week. Pretty soon, …
Educators: Department of Labor Guidelines on Internships – What are your thoughts?
Entry by Pat Patterson
At this point, I am sure most, if not all of you are aware of the Department of Labor Guidlines concerning internship compensation. Although these guidlines may not seem that “new,” it is always good to share our thoughts.

2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern.
3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff.
4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually …
