I am Abbey Szentes, a junior at Indiana University studying Human Resource Management and minoring in Finance. I am currently an HR intern for netlogx, a consulting firm in downtown Indianapolis, where I have been able to implement a new learning management system, supervise a high school intern, and onboard three interns into the company. Hello, I’m Favian and I am proud to be part of the Indiana INTERNnet’s team as the 2019 spring intern. I am currently a senior at IUPUI Kelley School of Business where I am finishing up my bachelor’s in marketing and I will be graduating this May!

I used to live in North Carolina, but my parents decided to move to Indiana when I was 3 years old, and I have spent most of my life here. Growing up I played several sports such as basketball, baseball and football to keep me out of trouble. Betsy Adams is currently serving as the talent acquisition intern at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance (IFBI) in the talent management department. She is a rising senior at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana studying human resource management and business. She will graduate in May of 2019 and is anxiously looking forward to kick starting her career in human resources.

On Wednesday, June 27, I had the opportunity, with the other 24 IFBI interns, to spend my afternoon at Gleaner’s Food Bank of Indiana volunteering and serving the Indianapolis community. Our internship program provides us with a number of off-site field trips as opportunities to spend time outside of the home office to better understand the impact of the company and serve the community in a hands-on way.

Hello, my name is Marissa and I am excited to be Indiana INTERNnet’s intern for the summer of 2018. I have just wrapped up my junior year at IUPUI, where I study journalism, public relations and advertising.

Prior to relocating to Indianapolis for college, I attended high school near my hometown of Losantville, Ind. Though Indy is a relatively small city, it is huge compared to Losantville, which has a population of less than 300 people! I definitely prefer city living and plan to move somewhere even larger later on in my career.

My previous positions have all been communications or event management related, taking place at locally-based organizations such as the Indiana State Museum, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis, and Indiana Futsal. Interns and internship supervisors from organizations throughout central Indiana are invited to events at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (May 31), Fountain Square Theatre Rooftop Garden (June 1), Indianapolis Zoo (July 10), Indiana State Fair (August 3) and meet@TheChallenge (August 23). Each will offer professional development and networking opportunities in addition to time to explore the venues and have fun.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis event will begin at 9 a.m. with an interactive workshop. Prior to that, check-in will be held at 8:30 a.m., and interns will be invited to participate in a networking game. Following the workshop, attendees will be free to explore The Children’s Museum until it closes at 5 p.m. Guests will have access to The Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience. Indiana INTERNnet: What did you like most about your internship with Poly-Wood, LLC?

Shoshannah Bontrager: I loved how involved upper management was with everyone. There are over 300 employees, but the CFO worked one-on-one with me, an intern, to teach me about how to create financial statements, GAAP rules, etc. The company also works hard to make the environment one where people love going to work, and they succeed!

Logan is a senior in the Lacy School of Business at Butler University studying marketing and finance. His passion for people and desire to apply his business and leadership skills led him to FirstPerson where he interns on the Sales & Advisory team. He is responsible for assisting advisors, growing the book of business and exploring creative benefit approaches in the marketplace. 

An internship is a two-way street. For the intern, it’s an opportunity to “try things on” and apply knowledge gained from hours of sitting in class each week. For the employer, it leads to enhanced perspectives, increased workflow capability, and a pipeline for top talent.

Most college students know that getting an internship is an integral part of expanding their professional career. Some universities, including mine, even require it. There are websites dedicated to helping student’s find the perfect internship for their majors and/or skill sets, which makes for an easy and comfortable application process. Even uploading your resume to sites such as IndianaINTERN.net or LinkedIn could potentially lead to a recruiter contacting you, and from experience, it is exciting when that happens.

Just because there are plenty of places to see postings for an internship these days, doesn’t mean it is easy to get one. Your resume needs to be perfect and sometimes references, a cover letter, and/or a writing sample are required during the application process, and that is …

Last week, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the final intern engagement event of the summer. Local interns and mentors enjoyed a day of networking, trivia and deep-fried food!

The program began with welcoming remarks from Indiana INTERNnet Executive Director Janet Boston, followed by an overview of the fair’s festivities by Alexis Behnkendorf, marketing manager at the Indiana State Fair.

Next on our stage was the keynote speaker, Ashley Miser, community and events manager at IndyHub. She spoke about connecting with Indianapolis, and how it is a great place to work and grow. Miser also admitted she is a foodie and will gladly recommend local eateries to try!

“It’s really important for us [at IndyHub] to make sure people know that you can curate your lifestyle in Indianapolis and that our city is a maker’s space,” said Miser.

Today is my last day as the videography and marketing intern for Indiana INTERNnet! I’m very sad for my time here to be over—it flew by so quickly. Thanks to everyone who watched my videos, read my blogs, or just kept in touch with Indiana INTERNnet during this fun summer.

I’ve lived in Indianapolis for my whole life, but this internship has allowed me to experience some wonderful new things in my city. I got to work in the middle of downtown, spend the day at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis as an adult (and see their behind-the-scenes collections!), network with fellow interns at the Rooftop Garden at the Fountain Square Theatre Building, spend a whole day exploring the Indiana State Fair, and more.
