A Lesson on Personal Branding
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2019.
Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, Iâve had the opportunity to go to many networking events. The exposure Iâve received in the âbig little townâ of Indianapolis has been instrumental in developing my professional self and making connections with influential people.
Milliner & Associates is a well-exposed company and Iâve had the ability to attend many networking events, like âForward: Branding Yourself in Your Businessâ hosted by the Indy Chamber, and Indiana INTERNnetâs Summer Intern Engagement Event at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis. While these events were completely different in formality and tone, they were about the same topic: self-branding.
The speaker of the Forward event was Trevor Yager, founder of TrendyMinds. Majoring in psychology with minors in political science and history, he wasnât really set up …
Intern-to-Hire: Madison Stis
Madison Stis was nominated for the 2017 IMPACT Awards for her outstanding work at her internship with the Indiana State Fair Commission. After her Employment Office internship, she was hired as a full-time assistant manager of human resources. Stis graduated from Indiana University with a major in health administration and a minor in human resource management.
Indiana INTERNnet: Describe your internship with The Indiana State Fair (ISF). What was the most valuable experience?
Madison Stis: My internship at the ISF was the best experience I couldâve had. I was shown major aspects of human resources in a very short time period and received excellent hands-on experience. Mark Anderson, the director of human resources at the ISF, really helped me grow and realize human resources was the field I wanted to pursue. The most valuable experience I had at the ISF was the ability to hire and schedule the employees …
#SummerINternFun @ The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
Last Wednesday, Indiana INTERNnet and the Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis hosted an all-day professional development event at the museum. Local interns got the chance to participate in sessions including personal branding, resume review and a mentor roundtable.
Interns also had the opportunity to explore the Childrenâs Museum throughout the dayâthe Museum is the largest childrenâs museum in the country! There was a photo scavenger hunt, planetarium show, and special behind-the-scenes collections tour. In the collections tour, interns got to see a large number of items not currently on display in the museum, such as dinosaur bones, famous movie props, and vintage Barbies, to name a few.
Chelsea DuKate, founder and president of Red Envelope Consulting, conducted a personal branding seminar at the event. âEvents like this are important because it creates engagement and gives interns a viewpoint of another place to go, an experience,â she said. âIt also gives them …
Flashback Friday: My High School Internship
The concept of high school interns may seem strange. Donât most high schoolers work at fast food restaurants or mow lawns, if they have a job at all? When you think of a typical intern, you probably think of a college student or a twenty-something trying to ease their way into a full-time position. High school interns are becoming more common as the job market becomes more competitive and the demand for more relevant work experience increases.
When I was 17, I got an internship at VYPE Magazine Central Indiana, a local branch of a national high school sports magazine. My dad occasionally took photos for the VYPE magazine and web site, and I jumped on the opportunity to work with them. I was a senior in high school and I knew I wanted to go to college to major in journalism, but I had no idea what I wanted …
Interns Connect for Indy’s Future
Last Friday, the Indy Chamber hosted Indy Intern Connection in partnership with Indiana INTERNnet at the Fountain Square Theatre Building. Employers and interns from all over the city were invited to hang out on the rooftop garden, play duckpin bowling, and network.
The Director of Policy & Civic Engagement at the Indy Chamber and Indiana INTERNnet Board of Directors Member, Matt Impink, played a big part in organizing the event. He said that one of the main goals of the event was to encourage connections between interns, who will ideally be the future professionals of Indiana. He, and many other groups in Indiana, hope to encourage young Hoosiers to continue to live and work here. This combats the âbrain drainâ issueâthat many of Indianaâs best and brightest leave Indiana to work elsewhere.
Many interns were from Indiana, but there was a decent handful who werenât. In addition to encouraging current Indiana …
Shoes, HR, and Shadows
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2019.
Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, I have ample opportunity to network and learn about the community of Indianapolis businesses. So much so that I was able attend an afternoon job shadow with seven different human resource (HR) representatives at Finish Line, Inc.
Finish Line is an Indianapolis-based company that brings primarily athletic shoes to the consumer in retail stores nationwide. Employing over 10,000 people at over 900 retail locations, Finish Line prides themselves on delivering âthe epic finishâ to all customers. There are six full-time Milliner & Associates employees and an intern (thatâs me) heading over to such a massive company for half a day was a shock to say the least. Iâm not going to lie to you guys⊠I was a bit nervous going …
Meet the New Intern!
Hi, all! Iâm so excited to be the marketing and videography intern this summer at Indiana INTERNnet! Iâm going into my senior year of college at Indiana University, where I study journalism and Spanish. I was born and raised in Indianapolis. I love this city, and am thrilled to be working right downtown.
Iâve been creating videos for fun since high school, but I never thought about making it into a career until an IU student organization I’m involved with, RUF, asked me if I would make videos for them.
This is the first time that Indiana INTERNnet has taken on a marketing and videography intern, and Iâm so glad they did! But why hire a videography intern?
In our Internet-immersed culture, video can make a huge impact! Take it from the countless viral videos floating around on social media these daysâpeople love a good video, and a good video will …
Networking. Networking. Networking.
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2019.
As a business student, this work has been nailed into my head about 1,000 times.
âIn order to get a good job, you have to network!â
âItâs super competitive out there, you need to get connections!â
Most of my friends have non-business majors and Iâm often asked by them what the deal with business students and networking is—-âItâs like your solution to everything. Are you hungry? Go out and network.â (This is a real quote).
It became a recurring joke. âHey business student, are you networking?â
Prompted by the relentless heckling I got from my friends, I set out to find answers. Why do business people focus so much on networking, and why do business schools hammer it into our heads? According to a survey by The …
Keep Calm and Intern
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.
What grade do I need to get on the midterm in order to get an A in the class?
How much sleep do I really need tonight?
I canât wait for summer breakâŠ
Which classes do I need to take in the fall?
Should I change my major?
I need four hours of sleep to function.
Wait⊠what am I going to do over the summer? Classes? Internship? Work in *shudders* retail?
If youâve thought any or all of these things in the past few weeks, youâre probably in the same situation as I am. My hope is that by the time you finish reading this, youâll be a bit calmer and less frantic about the future.
Where do you want to be in 5 years?

The Expectation Versus Reality of my Internship
Kelsey Davis is the marketing and public relations intern at the Crossroads of America Council. She is a junior at Butler University, double majoring in marketing and art + design.
My first impression of an internship was at nine years old with the movie, âThe Devil Wears Prada.â From that moment on, I feared the day I would have to face my own version of Miranda Priestly.
When I became a junior at Butler University, it was time to start applying for internships and inching towards a life-long career. Interviews often have a stigma for being brutal. These situations make you question your own thoughts and actions and wonder if itâs too soon for a follow-up call. If an offer is secured, you can only breathe momentarily until your first day.
Iâve compiled my top five expectations versus realities of an internship. Specifically, this applies to my role as …
Pete the Planner & Hattie the Intern
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.
I recently had the opportunity to go to Indiana INTERNnetâs Intern Meet & Greet with Pete⊠Pete the Planner. If you havenât heard of him, heâs a financial planner by day and comedian by night. Well, he used to be until he decided to combine the two into one. Now, he writes for USA Today and is the author of ten books. He appears on local news broadcasts regularly to advice others on how to make yourself more financially successful. While he was speaking to the group of interns, he catered his speech to appease his audience by talking about student budgeting and student loans.
He started out by asking us how we paid for our social lives during college. Typically, itâs one of four answers. First, …
Nick Maines: Making an IMPACT
Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on February 8, 2017, at the 11th Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesâ successes.
These are their stories.
Nick Maines is junior at Marian University, expecting to graduate in May 2018. He interned with Northwestern Mutual as a college financial representative.
Indiana INTERNnet: What made you interested in studying marketing?
Nick Maines: I decided to pursue this major, because I might want to go into sales someday. Marketing is very broad and it’s in all industries, so it gives me a lot of options in terms of jobs after college.
IIN: How was your internship with Northwestern Mutual?
NM: My internship with Northwestern Mutual was very challenging, yet rewarding at the same time. It allowed me to develop as a young business professional, while learning the ins …
When the Student Becomes the Teacher
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.
When I was 16 years old, I hated public speaking. I wouldnât speak at church, I wouldnât stand up and delegate at Girl Scout events, and I would even get nervous when I spoke to groups of 4 or 5 people at a time. As you can imagine, I was mortified when I saw that I had to take a public speaking class in order to graduate from practically any university. So, I tried to take the class in the best way possible, at Ivy Tech Community College in a small class with less people to see my face turn bright red the minute my mouth opened. It ended up being a group of 15(ish) students and it wasnât as difficult as I thought it would be. If I …
Tales from the Young Intern
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend âForward: Tales from the Young CEOâ, an Indy Chamber event. This was my first professional event, besides a career fair, so I had almost no expectations going in. My green âfirst-timerâ ribbon proudly displayed, I fumbled around nervously for the first 20 minutes of the networking portion of the event. I was at the mercy of my mentor, Nicole Bieker, as she introduced me to all the people she knew at the event.
After what seemed like an endless number of handshakes and conversations, finally the program started. The keynote speaker was Max Yoder, co-founder and CEO of Lesson.ly, an organization that produces learning software for companies. Being a CEO, I expected Max to be an old executive in a …
