Interning to Support the Warfighter
Katie Pfeiffer is studying Electrical Engineering at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and is expecting to graduate in May 2020. She is an intern for the Spectrum Technology Advanced Research Branch at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane Division. Her responsibilities include researching, creating diagrams and user manuals, applying technical skills and coding.
My internship at Crane was one of the best experiences in my entire life â not kidding! Crane is located in the middle of nowhere, but never have I met a community of people that are so kind and hospitable. This creates a positive and inviting work environment that allowed me to be excited to go into work every single day. The people in my group were also willing to challenge me and push me to learn more, work harder, and grow to become a better engineering student.
I worked on a multitude of projects while I …
Meet Our Spring 2018 Intern!
Iâm thrilled to be joining Indiana INTERNnet this semester as the communication and special events intern! I am currently a junior at IUPUI studying journalism with a concentration in public relations. Iâm originally from #TheRegion (Northwest Indiana), but have since transplanted to Indy and instantly fell in love. One of the best things about going to school at an urban campus is that there are SO many opportunities for professional development and growth. Not only do I get to learn about interesting topics in school, but I also get to directly use those skills in my work environment.
Interning has been the theme of my college career. In the past three years, Iâve held seven positions with experiences ranging from IT/technology support, graphic design and even event planning. Through these internships, Iâve learned what I love, what I donât love, and the ins and outs of so many different areas. …
Timing is Key When it Comes to Posting an Internship
Can you believe that summer internships are already being posted on IndianaINTERN.net? Some employers may be thinking this is way too soon, but itâs the perfect time. Unlike recruiting full-time employees, interns have multiple things to consider like short-term housing, class schedules and receiving college credit before being able to accept. Thatâs why itâs so important for employers to give themselves plenty of time to recruit internship candidates.
According to Indiana INTERNnetâs Employer Guide, students often apply to summer internships in February or March. However, highly competitive programs start recruiting in the fall prior.
During the summer, some students may be interested in interning at a company thatâs far from their hometown. Since this will require them to set aside time to find short-term housing, they start searching for internships early. That way, if they receive an internship offer, theyâll have ample time to figure out their housing situation.

Dos and Donâts at the Company Holiday Party
The time of year for company holiday cheer and festivities is here! That means opportunities to network with fellow co-workers, as well as opportunities to possibly embarrass yourself. Follow these dos and donâts to avoid potential damage to your reputation.
Do: participate in holiday activities.
Each organization handles the holidays differently. Some may have activities throughout the season, while others may plan a low-key pitch-in. Whatever the case may be, you should get involved. If thereâs a planning committee (and your internship supervisor approves), reach out to the leader and offer your help.
Donât: be too competitive.
If your organization has games or other competitive activities, remember to stay professional. A little competitive spirit is okay in some situations, but donât go overboard. For example, you shouldnât scream âLoser!â in the vice presidentâs face. That could lead to an uncomfortable conversation with your internship supervisor or …
Internship Woes? Speak Up!
After weeks of searching, applying and interviewing, you finally receive an internship offer! Youâre super excited about the projects youâre going to complete and the people youâll be working with. However, after the first month of interning, you realize that your role and responsibilities are not what you expected. You might feel like your skills are not being utilized or developed, but what can you do?
Talk to your internship supervisor
Your supervisor is the person who is tasked with providing you with the resources you need to have a successful internship. If youâre unhappy, theyâre the first person you should speak with. Review your internshipâs description, and if it doesnât match up with the work youâre doing, let them know.
Express your eagerness to take on more projects. Then, work with your supervisor to come up with a workplan so you have a structured outline of what you …
National Staffing Employee Week as an Intern
Moira Keating is a human resources marketing/employee engagement intern at Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from Marian University in December 2018.Â
National Staffing Employee Week was one of the most exciting weeks in my working career thus far! This special occasion was celebrated September 18, 2017 â September 22, 2017, and was my first time meeting my companyâs employees and clients. Milliner & Associates (M&A) was super excited to show appreciation for our #StaffingStars (I used that hashtag a lot the past week!). National Staffing Employee Week was a huge learning opportunity for me as well.
Since beginning my internship with M&A, I have learned an infinite amount of information regarding the staffing industry. Once this internship started, it has been a whirlpool of information regarding such a fast-growing industry. Staffing is projected to reach $142.4 billion in revenue, and that is no surprise considering how thrilling and …
So, You Received an Internship Offer â Now What?
After weeks, if not months applying, you receive the call youâve been looking for: you got the internship! Before saying âyes,â there are a couple of things you should do to make sure that your internship experience is going to be a great one!
Confirm details
Make sure that you are on the same page about your pay rate and schedule you will be working. Determine what your first and last days will be, and mention any planned vacations you may have. This will help your internship supervisor plan ahead for the days you will be absent.
Also, if your company doesnât have a private parking lot, ask for parking information. Some companies can provide a monthly parking stipend to interns, but some may not be able to. If you will be on your own for parking, ask for the most affordable options, and reserve your …
8 Months of Learning
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.
This summer, I was surrounded by the staffing industry through my internship with Milliner & Associates (a staffing firm, go figure). Prior to my internship, I didnât even know staffing firms existed. I sort of knew what temporary workers were (mostly just from watching Ryan on âThe Officeâ), but had no clue how they got there or that they were employed by a third-party agency. For those of you who may not know, a staffing firm forms relationships with area businesses and when the business has a personnel need, they call a staffing firm and they (hopefully) find or already have a job seeker who fits what theyâre looking for.
There are many different paths you can take in the Human Resources world (recruiting, employee engagement, training & …

Internships: Communicating and Learning the Odd Soft Skills
Noah Simpson is a project manager based out of Indianapolis. He graduated this previous May from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelors in Human Resources. During his time at the Uindy, he was the founder of water polo and entrepreneurship clubs. Noah also served as a business liaison for the University and completed three internships with corporations across Indiana.
Any college student who has gone through orientation should know that getting an internship is important. However, it is not always made clear to students why an internship is important. My first year at the University of Indianapolis, I was blessed to have a faculty mentor hold me accountable on developing myself not just as a student, but as a communicator. My education and mentors provided me with a base skill set to succeed. However, I have found that the huge difference in my abilities as a communicator today …

These are their stories
Wes Wagner is pursuing a Bachelorâs degree in entrepreneurship and corporate innovation at Indiana University. Last year, he completed a digital marketing internship with Torchlite Marketing.
Indiana INTERNnet: How was your internship experience with Torchlite Marketing?
Wes Wagner: I started at Torchlite in February 2016 as a remote intern, worked in their temporary offices from May-August, and I resumed working as a remote intern until I left in October 2016. During my internship, the company went from 10 to about 25 employees and almost tripled their annual recurring revenue. It was a ârocket shipâ to say the least!
My favorite aspects of my experience with Torchlite were the flexibility of my …

Indiana INTERNnet: How did you become interested in pursuing your degree?
Allison Miller: I actually started out as an elementary education major with a concentration in special education when I first started college. At the time, I knew I wanted to work with children. However, as I got further along in the major, I realized that teaching just really wasn’t for me. So, I started taking outdoor and nonprofit courses, and feel in love with it. I decided to switch to a recreation and sport management …
