Pittman reflects on her perfect internship match with SlingShot SEO
So, itâs now officially August, and if youâre anything like me, youâre looking at your summer reflecting on everything youâve accomplished. My full-time internship at Slingshot SEO has definitely been a contributing factor to my fast paced summerâbut I honestly donât mind. Itâs crazy to think that I worked forty hour weeks and actually enjoyed it!
Back in December when I was frantically applying for internships, IndianaINTERN.net helped me find exactly what I was looking for. The countless hours I spent searching for internships, researching companies, submitting my resume and hitting ârepeatâ on that very process finally paid off when Slingshot SEO offered me an internship. When I received the call from my (current) boss, I was elated! Little did I know how much I would learn in a few short monthsâŠ
When I applied for the internship at Slingshot SEO, I figured it would be like the “typical …
The Finale Factor: Reflections on my internship at Indiana INTERNnet
This week marks the end of my internship here with Indiana INTERNnet, and just by coincidence, it signifies a close to the Freddie Factor blog series. My goal with this blog series was to inform peers, employers, and educators about the opportunities that arise from interning. Â
Hopefully, youâve found this blog to be informative and gained a better understanding of why internships are beneficial. Iâve tried to give tips and tricks relating to interviews, resumes, and the latest-and-greatest Indiana INTERNnet website technology. The Freddie Factor or âFF,â as it is referred to in the âfactor fan circles,â was also helpful to meâŠyes, there are factor fans. I did quite a bit of research when writing these blogs and learned a great deal about interning, as a result. With this final blog, I thought Iâd recap my internship experience.
During my internship at Indiana INTERNnet, one of my assignments was …
Does Working While in School Really Pay Off?
As a college student, you are given a lot of freedom in how you choose to spend your time. There are classes to attend and homework to finish. But as you decide how to spend your time, many students have to choose whether or not working fits into their school schedule. Before deciding whether a part-time job or internship experience is worth your time, consider the following:
The National Center for Education Statistics (Horn & Malizio, 1998) found that students who worked 1â15 hours per week had the lowest risk for enrollment interruption, even when compared with students who did not work.
Retrieved from: http://rer.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/76/1/63
What does this mean?
Working students are more likely to graduate on time vs. those who donât work.
In a study by Van de Water (1996), student grades tended to improve as students worked more hours per week, up to a total of …
Got a Minute? Reflect on your Internship!
As you wrap-up your internship, you may find that you have a few treasured weeks of summer left. What are going to do during this time? Maybe youâll vacation, eat pizza, catch up on the latest blockbusters, relax, or prepare your dorm room or apartment. While these are all great ideas, if you do have a few spare minutes, you should consider utilizing the time to work on documenting your professional experiences.
Here at the Freddie Factor, Iâm hoping for an upcoming school year packed with interviews for full-time employment. During those interviews, recruiters and other interviewers will want to hear about your internship, personal, and academic accomplishments. They also want to see and hear that youâve prepared for the interview by researching the company, the position, and tailoring your answers accordingly.
Now is the time to update your resumeâdemonstrating what you did during your internships and results that …
Indiana Interns Come Together, Give Back
Last weekend, interns working in Central Indiana came together to give back to our community by volunteering at Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. Sponsored by ExactTarget, this event demonstrated how interns can use their âdown timeâ to connect with their community, give back, and meet fellow interns.
                Â
It was also a challenge to ExactTargetâs Slingshot interns to implement a community-wide event. Because the event was such a successâabout 50 interns attendedâweâre hoping to see other Indiana companies consider sponsoring similar events. (Are you an employer interested in thinking about ways to bring interns together to give back or have fun in their community? Please leave a comment so we can contact you.)
If youâre not interning in Central Indiana, we have some great partners in the Ft. Wayne area, too. The Live, Learn & Intern series is a part of the Graduate Retention Programâan initiative designed to …
Wrapping Up Your Internship
Itâs the latter half of July. Where does the time go? For some of you, your internship may be wrapping up in the near future. You should consider how you will finish your internship experience. For exampleâDo you need to begin âtying up loose endsâ on projects? Should you schedule a âthank youâ coffee or lunch with your boss? Have you kept a portfolio of your work thus far?
Your internship experience may lead to a job within the company, or it may be the last time you work for them. No matter the result, make sure you have networked with the people with whom you are working. When your internship ends, you will need references, and having a solid group of people who will provide you with positive references is an important final step in your internship experience. Howeverâtake noteâreferences should be people who know you personally and can …
Why Intern?
As a college student, you put in a lot of time, effort and work during the school year. There are many late nights involving lots of studying, lots of pizza, lots of energy drinks, and little sleep. Some weeks seem like a year⊠and some tests seem like they were probably written in ancient Greek. But⊠through it allâŠyou survive because there is a light at the end of the tunnel: SUMMER!
But wait. In order to best prepare myself for the âreal world,â everyone suggested I take advantage of the summertime to work and gain experience through an internship. This is the process that I and many of my peers have gone through this year. But, Iâm here to tell you, your summer internship will be worth every minute!
First, if you are unsure of what you want to do, having an internship can help narrow your field …
The Interview
This past weekend, I went to the theaters and saw the big blockbuster Transformers: Dark of the Moon. One part that got me thinking (not a major spoiler alert) was when Sam, a character from the movie, had to interview for jobs. He graduated from college and has no job, and his dad makes fun of him while chauffeuring him to job interviews all around the city. Each boss asks Sam different questions, and he answers them in a way that is opposite what the employer is looking for. It got me thinking about my interview experiences and what I have learned thus far. So, I thought I would share with you some advice I have about interviewing for a job or internship.
Interviews occur for employers to evaluate potential employees for prospective employment. Each company may have a slightly different way of conducting interviews. The basics of each …
Costs, Benefits of Virtual Internships
Chances are, youâve heard about virtual internshipsâbut have any of you actually been a virtual intern? (Iâm guessing no, but if the answer is yes, please leave a comment below, and tell us about your experience!) Personally, I was never a virtual intern, but Iâve had friends with great virtual internship stories to share, so I thought Iâd do a little research and explain to you what Iâve learned.
Both The Wall Street Journal and USA Today recently covered the increasing popularity of virtual internshipsâspecifically opportunities with start-up companies, which are more likely to be found on the coasts and in Silicon Valley. The articles indicate, as a result of the struggling economy, the job market is extremely competitive. Therefore, completing internshipsâvirtual or in-personâis more important than ever. In addition, companies are trying to find ways to reduce their costs, so having a virtual intern is a win-win for both …
What is Branding, and Why Do I Need It?
Branding, branding, branding. Itâs a popular buzzword in the college, internship, and job worlds, but what exactly is it?
Yes, branding can refer to âItâs so easy a caveman can do itââ thank you, GEICO. The branding to which I am referring is personal branding. This type of branding has many different definitions, but simply put, it is the personal identity you wish to convey to schools and employers. Your âbrandâ can involve many aspects of your lifeâfrom your appearance, your knowledge, and your resume, to your online presence with Facebook and LinkedIn. All of these elements are visible to potential schools or employers, and knowing how to create and manage your personal brand is important to future success.
So, how do you create a brand and manage it? In creating a brand, you first need to identify your goals. If you are trying to snag a specific job, …
In an Intern Search, Timing is Everything
The summer is a popular time for students to pursue internships. Just like any other job search, timing plays a key role in whether or not a student will land a sought after position. Here is my insight on the recruiting process and what students should know to help prepare them for a successful job search.
In an Ideal WorldâŠ
You are a student looking for a summer job, you read a job description, love the details of the position, meet all the requirements, and submit your application. Then, you wait for that phone call where an employer tells you that you are a perfect match and they want you to start ASAP!
In the Real WorldâŠ
The same scenario could play out many ways:
1. You find an ideal job, apply, get called for an interview, and hopefully land the position. This is …
A Volunteer Experience by Any Other NameâŠ
Entry by Cynthia McCullough-accountant with 25 years experience; currently Corporate Accounting Manager with Grote Industries; senior-level Accounting Information Systems student in Woods External Degree program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
âŠis an internship when it is completed under the auspices of the âSocial Marketing Experiment,â a new type of internship designed by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) and funded by a Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund grant. SMWC is conducting a team internship program which brings together campus and distance students to work for local not-for-profit organizations.
The specific assignment for the interns is to create and implement new marketing strategies using social media to benefit the not-for-profit. A significant feature of these internships is the âvirtualâ meeting, in which Adobe Connect Pro web conference software is used to facilitate communication between team members, faculty advisers, and the not-for-profit contact person. The balance of communication is handled through emails and conference calls.

âWinners donât have to explain themselves. Only losers do.â
As many of you may already be aware, actor Charlie Sheen has been working with internships.com to hire a âwinningâ summer 2011 social media intern to monitor and manage his social media marketing campaigns â imagine having that experience listed on your resume…
If this is your first time learning about the internship, donât get too excited; the competition/interview process is already in its third round, narrowing the some 82,000 applicants down to 250 individuals who have proven to have #tigerblood thus far.
21-year-old Julia Hatmaker is one of the 250 left. She has made comments to The Patriot-News about her experience:
In the first round, she was asked to tell why she thought she should get the job. Her response was a twist on Sheenâs own words: âWinners donât have to explain themselves. Only losers do.â
âI guess they liked that,â she said.
Although this answer is …
Internships Prove More Valuable Than Ever for Companies and Students
From Inside INdiana Business
Itâs easy to list specific reasons why an organization should start an internship program: increased productivity, enhanced creativity, effective recruitment â to name a few. But itâs the coveted notion of saving time and money while getting quality results thatâs music to the ears of any employer.
In fact, these days when hiring for a full-time position, some organizations may not have the time or financial resources to recruit a seasoned individual. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employersâ (NACE) 2010 Internship and Co-op Survey (based on 235 employer responses), 83% of employers said that they use internship programs as a tool for recruiting entry-level talent, an increase of approximately 5% from 2009.
NACEâs survey also indicated that 44.6% of respondentsâ full-time entry level hires from the class of â08-â09 were from their internship programs, an increase of approximately 10% from the prior year.
