We all know first impressions mean a lot and developing your personal brand can help achieve a good, and hopefully lasting, impression. According to Forbes, âYour personal brand is all about who you are and what you want to be known for.â Personal branding is an ongoing process of forming an image about you.
Letâs discover how to develop your brand so that you can be assured what you have to offer shines.

Pam Plain Intern of the Year (College/University)
Pam Plain led an international public health initiative as a summer intern with Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.
KTB began to collect breast tissue from women all over the world, and started in Kenya, Africa, where the prevalence of a particularly aggressive type of breast cancer is common. Plain made arrangements for facilities and transportation of medical and surgical supplies and volunteer materials from the United States to Kenya.
âThis involved tens of thousands of dollars, superb communication skills and organizational skills, and an understanding …
Thankful Intern Shares Grateful Moments
The below freezing temperatures hint at the brewing winter and signal a string of holiday celebrations. Every November, Thanksgiving is celebrated in Indiana with only the juiciest of roasted turkeys and the sweetest of pumpkin pies. As family and friends gather around the table, a sense of gratefulness fills the air almost competing with the blend of nutmeg and cinnamon. I find myself reflecting on the internship opportunity I have enjoyed with Indiana INTERNnet.
Grateful for the chance to gain work experience: Graduating with my MBA right after college, I had no experience in marketing. For the past 6+ months, I have learned how to manage social media accounts, design print and web materials, analyze website metrics and write content. My marketing internship has not only expanded my skill set but also provided me with relevant work experience.
Grateful to be building my portfolio with skills-focused projects: …
That’s Not A Barn – It’s Not Red!
This is a guest blog by Armenda Boyer, a sophomore at Purdue University. She is currently working toward a dual major in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Economics. This past summer, she was an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission. Â
âWhere are we going?â asked a wide-eyed little boy as I led his summer camp group to the Mac Reynoldâs Barn at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
As an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission, my team and I often hosted student field trips. My favorite days working at the fair were the days when children flooded the Fairgrounds to learn about agriculture. This summer, I realized that helping children learn is one of the most fulfilling things I can do. When that learning is regarding agriculture, an industry I am passionate about, I am even more excited to share information.
I answered the eager …

The Alumni Networking Solution
This is a guest blog on tips to connecting during a job search by John Muscarello, Founder and CEO of Start Networking Today.
Looking for an excuse to spend even more time on social media?
LinkedIn has proven to be a great professional networking tool. According Jobvite, âEmployees hired through referral are hired 55% faster than those who come from a career site.â
I have personally used The Alumni Networking Solution to find leads and get interviews that lead to job offers.
What exactly is The Alumni Networking Solution?
The Alumni Networking Solution is a 5-step networking tool designed to introduce yourself to college alumni and develop relationships that lead to referrals. This means actually getting to know the person- and asking for his or her advice, instead of a job. I used these five simple steps â in about 10 minutes per connection â to find …
Breakfast with Twitter, YouTube and NPR
Would you believe when I started my internship, I had never used Twitter before? Four months and thousands of tweets later, social media is one of my main responsibilities with Indiana INTERNnet. Learning by doing is a wonderful thing.
At the Millennial Impact conference in Indianapolis (#MCON13) on July 18th, I sat at breakfast with none other than Jenna Golden, a leader in Twitterâs Washington, D.C. office, along with Jessica Mason (YouTube) and Danielle Deabler (NPR). I would have never imagined I would dive into social media so deep, so fast.
Throughout the entire conference, speaker after speaker emphasized the importance of allowing Millennials input and control on projects specific to social involvement and movement. This definitely resonates with my experience at Indiana INTERNnet.
Donât worry. I took away some valuable tips from this conference other than choosing the right table at breakfast:

Five Minutes of Pinterest a Day
Every day, I settle into my cubicle space: my keyboard and mouse at a comfortable distance, my cup of water within reach, and a bag of almonds to satisfy the occasional craving. Within these quasi-walls, I find myself hungry for an external infusion of creativity to lift my thoughts to the extraordinary. This is where Pinterest comes into play.
“…I find myself hungry for an external infusion of creativity to lift my thoughts to the extraordinary.”
If you are unfamiliar with Pinterest, this social media site offers a virtual cork board of sorts where you can browse, pin, and later review items of interest. This act of pinning usually ends up making me hungry, wanting to exercise, and working on a craft project. None of the ideas turn out as good as they look on Pinterest. The recipes I attempt to replicate do not look as pretty. The fitness …

Mind The Employment Gap
From âwhat are you going to do when you grow upâ to âwhat are you going to do after graduationâ to even âwhatâs next for you,â life seems to be one never ending string of career questions. These questions assume that one is continually equipping oneâs self with the tools needed to proceed onto the next career milestone. Up until my graduation from college in May 2011, I thought I was ready to take on âthe real worldâ â to do whatever I was going to do when I grew up. However, like many of my generation, I faced a reality that I was not expecting: the student employment gap.
A labor shortage is a stark realization as the Baby Boomer workforce retires, heating up the competition for emerging talent. However, a striking contrast exists bewteen what employers require and what college students bring to the table. As reported …
Finding an internship from a ‘tweet’
This is a guest post from Jenna Whalen, a student at the University of Indianapolis. She found her upcoming summer internship with DistinXion from a tweet posted by Indiana INTERNnet.
Last year I was extremely lucky with my internship search.
Sure, I had a few roadblocks, but my professor introduced me to the person who ended up being my boss for the summer. From there, it just took off with very little effort on my part.
This year, though, I wasnât quite as lucky.
I began my search in December and applied with 14 different places. I had a few interviews and a couple offers, but nothing seemed like a good fit. I was frustrated because I thought I had exhausted all avenues â Iâd been on numerous websites and had also communicated with several key people.
Just when I was reaching the height of my frustration, something unexpected happened. I was on …
The potential of virtual internships
Are you an employer low on office space? Do business nationally or internationally? Office located far away from major cities or college towns?
Are you a student with an academic course load that doesnât lend itself to an office internship? Canât find any internships near your campus?
If you answered âyes,â a virtual internship could be a great option for you. Itâs a trend that is picking up steam because the benefits are numerous. In 2012, there were 58 new virtual internship positions posted to our website.
Virtual internships are a great way for employers to nurture talent in soon-to-be professionals and for students to secure full-time employment post-graduation. Take it from our friends at Ativio, an information technology and business process outsourcing solutions company in Indianapolis.
âWe work in virtual environments all the time,â said Susan Nierste, vice president of business affairs. âWe know what we need as a …
