However, as I got further along in the major, I realized that teaching just really wasn’t for me. So, I started taking outdoor and nonprofit courses, and feel in love with it. I decided to switch to a recreation and sport management …

Intern Day at the Indiana State Fair 2017
Last week, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the final intern engagement event of the summer. Local interns and mentors enjoyed a day of networking, trivia and deep-fried food!
The program began with welcoming remarks from Indiana INTERNnet Executive Director Janet Boston, followed by an overview of the fairâs festivities by Alexis Behnkendorf, marketing manager at the Indiana State Fair.

Farewell from the Summer Intern!
Today is my last day as the videography and marketing intern for Indiana INTERNnet! Iâm very sad for my time here to be overâit flew by so quickly. Thanks to everyone who watched my videos, read my blogs, or just kept in touch with Indiana INTERNnet during this fun summer.
Iâve lived in Indianapolis for my whole life, but this internship has allowed me to experience some wonderful new things in my city. I got to work in the middle of downtown, spend the day at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis as an adult (and see their behind-the-scenes collections!), network with fellow interns at the Rooftop Garden at the Fountain Square Theatre Building, spend a whole day exploring the Indiana State Fair, and more. One of the goals of Indiana INTERNnet is to retain local talent through engagement events, and it was so fun to be in the center of …
5 Takeaways from “Power Up; Stress Down”
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2019.
Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, I have access to many resources through the American Staffing Association (ASA), one of which is webinars on their website. These webinars are conducted by professionals around the nation who are experts on what they teach. From marketing and social media to employment law and employee engagement, these webinars offer a variety of content with wonderful advice for businesses and people alike.
The most recent webinar I watched was titled âPower Up; Stress Down.â Guided by Adam White, motivational speaker, this webinar covered a lot of great topics and had many great little nuggets of wisdom. While there were plenty of different things that I learned from Adam White, I wanted to share five takeaways:
Knowledge is not power, applied knowledge …
Tips & Tricks for a Polished LinkedIn Profile
If youâre a college student, thereâs no doubt youâve heard of LinkedIn. The professional social network is extremely popular, and Iâm sure more than one professor, career counselor or mentor has told you to join it.
LinkedIn can be intimidating to use at first for inexperienced students, but a solid LinkedIn profile can go a long way in your internship and post-grad career search. According to LinkedIn, 9 in 10 companies use LinkedIn to recruit new hires. Additionally, you can apply for many jobs and internships directly through LinkedIn.
Here are five suggestions for students to polish their LinkedIn profiles.
Add a (good!) photo.
This one is more important than you might thinkâaccording to LinkedIn, profiles with pictures get viewed 14 times more than those without! Use a clear, high-quality photo of you in appropriate clothing. No grainy shots, cropped group pictures or crazy expressions. A simple smiling photo is …
A Lesson on Personal Branding
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2019.
Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, Iâve had the opportunity to go to many networking events. The exposure Iâve received in the âbig little townâ of Indianapolis has been instrumental in developing my professional self and making connections with influential people.
Milliner & Associates is a well-exposed company and Iâve had the ability to attend many networking events, like âForward: Branding Yourself in Your Businessâ hosted by the Indy Chamber, and Indiana INTERNnetâs Summer Intern Engagement Event at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis. While these events were completely different in formality and tone, they were about the same topic: self-branding.
The speaker of the Forward event was Trevor Yager, founder of TrendyMinds. Majoring in psychology with minors in political science and history, he wasnât really set up …

5 Ways to Prepare for the Fall Semester
Get familiar with your schedule
Adjusting to your daily schedule is one of the most essential parts of being a put-together student! Iâm sure youâve already forgotten what classes you registered for, so pull out that schedule and try to envision what this semester will look like for you. When will you have time to study? Work? Exercise? Do extracurriculars? Get a trusty planner and figure it out.
Get organized
Letâs be real, youâve probably blocked out all thoughts of school this summerâI donât blame you! Save yourself the stress at the last minute and figure out what needs to be done before you start school again. Do you know what you need for your dorm/apartment? Do you have notebooks, pens, pencils, folders? Are your textbooks ordered?
Get back on a schedule
Unfortunately, your daily schedule at school is probably more demanding than the summer schedule youâre on …

Madison Stis was nominated for the 2017 IMPACT Awards for her outstanding work at her internship with the Indiana State Fair Commission. After her Employment Office internship, she was hired as a full-time assistant manager of human resources. Stis graduated from Indiana University with a major in health administration and a minor in human resource management.
Indiana INTERNnet: Describe your internship with The Indiana State Fair (ISF). What was the most valuable experience?
Madison Stis: My internship at the ISF was the best experience I couldâve had. I was shown major aspects of human resources in a very short time period and received excellent hands-on experience. Mark Anderson, the director of human resources at the ISF, really helped me grow and realize human resources was the field I wanted to pursue. The most valuable experience I had at the ISF was the ability to hire and schedule the employees …
Indianaâs Best: Take them out to the ball game
With the growth of local pride and demand for “homegrown” products, there are many opportunities to experience true Hoosier culture. Whether it’s restaurants, attractions, shops or anything in between, we’ll showcase some of our favorite gems that make Indiana a great place to live and work.
The past few summers, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce has treated their employees to a daytime baseball game at Victory Field. It is a great way to step away from the computer and connect with co-workers. The sunny weather, hot dogs and peanuts only add to the fun!
If you havenât attended an Indianapolis Indians game, I highly recommend doing so. There are plenty of great seats to choose from, you can even have a picnic in the lawn seating. The non-sports fanatics will enjoy lively entertainment throughout the game: awkward kiss cam moments, bad dance moves and silly games for …

In the collections tour, interns got to see a large number of items not currently on display in the museum, such as dinosaur bones, famous movie props, and vintage Barbies, to name a few.
