This summer, I was surrounded by the staffing industry through my internship with Milliner & Associates (a staffing firm, go figure). Prior to my internship, I didnât even know staffing firms existed. I sort of knew what temporary workers were (mostly just from watching Ryan on âThe Officeâ), but had no clue how they got there or that they were employed by a third-party agency. For those of you who may not know, a staffing firm forms relationships with area businesses and when the business has a personnel need, they call a staffing firm and they (hopefully) find or already have a job seeker who fits what theyâre looking for.

Internships: Communicating and Learning the Odd Soft Skills
Noah Simpson is a project manager based out of Indianapolis. He graduated this previous May from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelors in Human Resources. During his time at the Uindy, he was the founder of water polo and entrepreneurship clubs. Noah also served as a business liaison for the University and completed three internships with corporations across Indiana.
Any college student who has gone through orientation should know that getting an internship is important. However, it is not always made clear to students why an internship is important. My first year at the University of Indianapolis, I was blessed to have a faculty mentor hold me accountable on developing myself not just as a student, but as a communicator. Wes Wagner is pursuing a Bachelorâs degree in entrepreneurship and corporate innovation at Indiana University. Last year, he completed a digital marketing internship with Torchlite Marketing.
Indiana INTERNnet: How was your internship experience with Torchlite Marketing?
Wes Wagner: I started at Torchlite in February 2016 as a remote intern, worked in their temporary offices from May-August, and I resumed working as a remote intern until I left in October 2016. During my internship, the company went from 10 to about 25 employees and almost tripled their annual recurring revenue. It was a ârocket shipâ to say the least!

I went to a career fair last fall as a college sophomore. I was nervous, terrified, uncomfortable, and sweaty the entire time I was there and even worse, I had no idea what to expect. The good news is that my friend that made me go had already visited our IUPUI Kelley School of Business career advisor and asked about career fair etiquette. So now I was equipped with a little bit of secondhand preparation from my friend and a resume. No professional experience whatsoever, not even admitted to the Kelley School of Business yet, I went⊠blissfully unaware of what I was walking into. I would have liked to have been more prepared but hey, it was fine!

Donât Become Stressed Out, Burnt Out and Cranky
On Wednesdays during the fall semester of my senior year of college, I would intern until 5 p.m., go to a night class until 9 p.m. and then do homework until 12 a.m. The other days of the week, I was either interning or in class. On the weekends, I worked part time at a department store.
I needed an internship for experience and to graduate. I needed to go to class to graduate. I needed a part-time job to pay to graduate. Plus, I had to do all of this while maintaining relationships my family and friends.

Indiana INTERNnet: How did you become interested in pursuing your degree?
Allison Miller: I actually started out as an elementary education major with a concentration in special education when I first started college. At the time, I knew I wanted to work with children. However, as I got further along in the major, I realized that teaching just really wasn’t for me. So, I started taking outdoor and nonprofit courses, and feel in love with it. Meet Our New Assistant Director
Indiana INTERNnet is pleased to announce Kristan Pfeifer has joined our team as assistant director! She will serve as the liaison between employers and Indiana INTERNnet as it pertains to work-based learning and career/technical education.
Hailing from Portland, Indiana, Kristan received her bachelorâs degree in telecommunications (sales and marketing) from Ball State University and a masterâs degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Kristan completed a sales internship with a local television station in Fort Wayne. That internship helped jumpstart her career and led to her moving to Fort Wayne.
After several years in pharmaceutical sales and the health care industry, Kristan decided to pursue a different career path and became the assistant director for employer connections and internships at Ball State Universityâs Career Center. She thrived on assisting employers with internship programs and working with internship coordinators throughout the campus. Kristan wanted to …

Intern Day at the Indiana State Fair 2017
Last week, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the final intern engagement event of the summer. Local interns and mentors enjoyed a day of networking, trivia and deep-fried food!
The program began with welcoming remarks from Indiana INTERNnet Executive Director Janet Boston, followed by an overview of the fairâs festivities by Alexis Behnkendorf, marketing manager at the Indiana State Fair.
Next on our stage was the keynote speaker, Ashley Miser, community and events manager at IndyHub. She spoke about connecting with Indianapolis, and how it is a great place to work and grow. Miser also admitted she is a foodie and will gladly recommend local eateries to try!
âItâs really important for us [at IndyHub] to make sure people know that you can curate your lifestyle in Indianapolis and that our city is a makerâs space,â said Miser.

Today is my last day as the videography and marketing intern for Indiana INTERNnet! Iâm very sad for my time here to be overâit flew by so quickly. Thanks to everyone who watched my videos, read my blogs, or just kept in touch with Indiana INTERNnet during this fun summer.
Iâve lived in Indianapolis for my whole life, but this internship has allowed me to experience some wonderful new things in my city. I got to work in the middle of downtown, spend the day at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis as an adult (and see their behind-the-scenes collections!), network with fellow interns at the Rooftop Garden at the Fountain Square Theatre Building, spend a whole day exploring the Indiana State Fair, and more. Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, I have access to many resources through the American Staffing Association (ASA), one of which is webinars on their website. These webinars are conducted by professionals around the nation who are experts on what they teach. From marketing and social media to employment law and employee engagement, these webinars offer a variety of content with wonderful advice for businesses and people alike.
The most recent webinar I watched was titled âPower Up; Stress Down.â Guided by Adam White, motivational speaker, this webinar covered a lot of great topics and had many great little nuggets of wisdom. While there were plenty of different things that I learned from Adam White, I wanted to share five takeaways:

If youâre a college student, thereâs no doubt youâve heard of LinkedIn. The professional social network is extremely popular, and Iâm sure more than one professor, career counselor or mentor has told you to join it.
LinkedIn can be intimidating to use at first for inexperienced students, but a solid LinkedIn profile can go a long way in your internship and post-grad career search. According to LinkedIn, 9 in 10 companies use LinkedIn to recruit new hires. Additionally, you can apply for many jobs and internships directly through LinkedIn.

Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, Iâve had the opportunity to go to many networking events. The exposure Iâve received in the âbig little townâ of Indianapolis has been instrumental in developing my professional self and making connections with influential people.
Milliner & Associates is a well-exposed company and Iâve had the ability to attend many networking events, like âForward: Branding Yourself in Your Businessâ hosted by the Indy Chamber, and Indiana INTERNnetâs Summer Intern Engagement Event at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis. While these events were completely different in formality and tone, they were about the same topic: self-branding.
