The Rose-Hulman senior has been an intern with BAE Systems every summer since graduating from high school in 2010. She performed a different rotation each year, broadening her skills and knowledge.

In her last year as an intern with BAE, she volunteered to be the sourcing intern, which in the past had rarely been a successful internship due to the lack of necessary skills and knowledge of the business. She volunteered for this post so she could see the big picture of the company as a whole and learn more about the business side.

Spring has sprung. Finally!

After my battle with the winter weather, I couldn’t be more excited about spring. Besides enjoying the warmth, we all know that spring is a busy time with cleaning and making way for new things by getting rid of the old.

It’s also the time of the season where some college students will be graduating soon or closing in on the last day of their internship. If you’re like me, you are going through both of these. So, there’s no better time than now to start sprucing things up a bit for the job search. You know, spring clean it.

We aren’t huge fans of labels, but this is one we really like:

“Intern-to-Hire.”

And Chris Jones earned the label after graduating from Indiana State University in December 2013 and going to work immediately for Baldwin & Lyons following a successful internship with them.

Chris had his hands on many jobs within the company. He assisted in the development of the recently established project management office (PMO). He took over the management of the company’s top strategic project that changed the rating premiums for the largest account. Baldwin & Lyons also updated their ChangePoint system, and Chris co-managed that project.

When Shawna McLetchie began a grant-funded internship with the School of Medicine at IUPUI in 2012, she had minimal lab experience.

Now, she can “wow” you with all that she’s picked up.

“My time in Dr. [Janice] Blum’s lab has allowed me to learn techniques like ELISIA, Western Blot and qPCR,” she said. “I have also been able to communicate in science by the writing I am starting to do as well as presenting my research project in lab meetings or even just talking to Dr. Blum about my data.”

During the summer of 2013, I had the pleasure of being an engineering intern at Oji Intertech in North Manchester, IN. Oji is a growing company that serves the automotive and industrial packaging industries. Their core competencies are centered on compression molding, die cutting, assembly and extrusion coating. No one hits the court without warming up first. You should be prepared for your interview.  Practice for your interview by reviewing typical interview questions and rehearsing your answers with a friend, family member or advisor. Practicing will make you a well-rounded player for your dream job.

During my sophomore year of college, I attended the business career fair at Indiana University and realized that day exactly where I wanted to work – ExactTarget.

Unfortunately, I was not chosen that year to be an intern, which encouraged me to work even harder to earn a spot the following year. One year later, however, I was chosen to be an ExactTarget Slingshot intern, and I had the time of my life that summer.

Last summer, I had the privilege of working as the Event Management Intern at the headquarters of the Special Olympics of Southern California in Long Beach. Carolyn Duong’s dream is to be a dentist.

And she credits internships with helping her discover that dream.

Carolyn completed two internships with Steven Hollar, DDS and David VanWormer, DDS while studying at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. While at both offices, she was able to practice proper bedside manner, engage in conversation with the patients and learn more about various oral conditions and treatments.

“I saw how each dentist truly cared for his patients and was able to use his education, knowledge and training to help his patients be free of pain and oral disease,” Carolyn recalls. “I wanted the same for my own career.”

Victoria is a junior studying journalism and public relations at Indiana University. She is a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and is also the director of the Canvas Creative Arts committee on IU’s Union Board. In her free time, Victoria enjoys running and writing.

Last year, I worked as a student ambassador for Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana. As a student ambassador, I worked on marketing Goodwill to students at Indiana University and members of the Bloomington community. My work consisted of hosting events, utilizing social media and a lot of crafting.

Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana focuses largely on giving back to the community. They do this through donations at their stores as well as working to educate people at the Indianapolis Metropolitan High School and The Excel Center, a tuition-free charter school for adults.

Career Development Professional of the Year

Since 2006, Claudine Meilink has played a key role in facilitating student-employer connections at Purdue University. She wears many hats within the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO), including career counselor, employer coordinator and data collector.

Meilink volunteers as a Faculty Fellow and has served on search committees for various departments on campus. She also serves as an at-large board member with the Career Development Professionals of Indiana and also held leadership positions with Midwest ACE (Association of Colleges and Employers), even chairing two of its conferences.

Pam Plain Intern of the Year (College/University)

Pam Plain led an international public health initiative as a summer intern with Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.

KTB began to collect breast tissue from women all over the world, and started in Kenya, Africa, where the prevalence of a particularly aggressive type of breast cancer is common.  Plain made arrangements for facilities and transportation of medical and surgical supplies and volunteer materials from the United States to Kenya.

Nothing is more nerve wracking than the unknown. Not knowing what to wear. Not knowing what time to wake up. Not knowing what to eat. Not knowing what time to leave your home.  All of these, plus some, went through my mind during the days leading up to my new position as the Marketing and Special Events intern for Indiana INTERNnet.

The unknown consumed my first day. Having to drive a little over an hour with Indiana’s unpredictable weather would pose a challenge. And it did. But who would have thought that I would begin my internship during the second round of the Polar Vortex?
