Questions to Ask Yourself During an Internship
It’s no secret that internships serve as an amazing learning opportunity and can set you up for the future. During your internship there are a few things you should keep in the back of your mind before you leave.
Could I do this long-term?
With the way internships are set up you are only there for a set amount of time. Because of this you get a real taste of what it would be like if you had a full-time position with this company. Do you like the environment and culture around you? What would you change about this position? What do you like about this position? These are some things to think about when looking at your future positions.
Where do I want to be?
Internships are not only an amazing way to get hands on experience in the workplace, but they also serve as an amazing way to …
Favian’s Farewell to Indiana INTERNnet
Goodbye Indiana INTERNnet,
As my spring internship wraps up with Indiana INTERNnet there are many things, Iām grateful for and look forward to! I’m thankful that the Indiana INTERNnet team took a chance on me to be part of the team for the spring. During my time here I had great overall experience being part of the team and working with them. I was able to accomplish many things during my time and tried new things out. There are many wonderful people I met throughout my time here and have made great connections. I learned what it was like to be in a professional environment and how to interact with others. I can now say I know what it feels like to work a nine-to-five.
This internship helped me gain many valuable skills that will help transition into the professional world without a problem. I …
Intern Spotlight: Dei’Marlon Scisney
Hello everyone, my name is DeiāMarlon Scisney, but most people know me as āD.ā I am from Evansville, Indiana and I am a rising junior from Wabash College. I am currently working towards a Biology major with English, Spanish, and Chemistry minors.
This will allow me to attend medical school after graduation, but life and experience could always steer me in a different direction. Like the Greek medical genius Hippocrates, medicine/healthcare is the temptress of my mind. Furthermore, with my desire to be an advocate for social, political, and economic issues, this internship in Government Affairs at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, in a way, found me.
Already, Iāve felt so welcomed which has made for a smooth transition into this internship. There is most definitely a purpose or motive behind getting involved with an initiative and being unified for a specific cause, which means, understanding how to be comfortable, …
What to Really Look for In Your Next Intern
We recently started screening every single internship posted onĀ IndianaINTERN.net. We quickly realized this is a time-consuming process. But it truly increases the quality of internships we share with students. I noticed, however, a common trend: Employers were putting a lot of emphasis on experiences as opposed to desired skills from potential applicants.
I see a lot of internship postings requesting specific qualifications. The employer limits its search to juniors or seniors, a student with a certain GPA, number of courses completed and/or total yearsā experience. There are plenty of other attributes that should be considered when trying to find your next intern.
Applicantsā skills
When you review an applicantās resumĆ©, itās easy to hone in on how many internships they have or have not completed. Instead of looking solely at quantity, focus on abilities developed during their professional experiences.
If the applicant doesnāt have an internship background, avoid discounting them. …
Getting Into A Nine To Five Routine
With this being my first professional job, I have never had to experience the struggle that is the nine to five routine. It was an extremely hard task for the first couple of days. It took time getting used to waking up early and working all day. My past retail jobs offered me a few experiences of working an all-day shift, but it was never very consistent. I wanted to share some tips that I have come across when it comes to getting used to working a full day for the first time.
Get some rest
Even though it might be the summer right now, going to bed early is the biggest piece of advice I can give. Instead of staying up all night watching Netflix, putting your phone down earlier can help. The eight-hour sleep theory is true, and I have experienced it firsthand. Making sure you are fully …
How Taking a Chance Can Benefit Your Future Self
āYou miss 100% of the shots you donāt takeā -Wayne Gretzky
Even though everyone, everywhere, frequently mentions this quote (especially if you’re a fan of The Office), it really carries a great meaning.
Big changes are difficult and scary. I had no idea what to expect when I started my first internship here at Indiana INTERNnet. I had had a few jobs before this, but no internship experience or working in a professional office space. A week before I started, I second guessed myself as to whether I made the right decision to take the position. I had just finished my freshman year of college and was completely convinced I was not ready to take on this responsibility
Whether itās moving to college or starting a new job, change can be scary. If you donāt try, you donāt know. I hope that if you are considering making a change in …
Internship Advice From The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Panel
In June, interns from around the state attended Indiana INTERNnetās first engagement event of the summer. Interns came together at The Childrenās Museum of Indianapolis to network, explore, engage in a personal development seminar, and hear from a panel of past and present Childrenās Museum interns.
Panelists shared their stories, while attendees asked questions regarding career paths and entering the workforce.
The future
One of my biggest takeaways was that itās okay to not know what you want to do. Taking everything one day at a time was a large focal point that the panelists hit on. They all spoke of their past experiences and how they got to where they are today.
It was interesting to hear the different ways they wound up at the museum. Something they had in common: All had reached a point where they had no idea what they wanted to do or where …

First Day NervesĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
For me, my first day was terrifying. I was so nervous about what to do, what to say, how to act, and everything in-between. I did not want to make myself stand out in any way, or say the wrong thing, which made everything worse. The whole day was amazing and I could go back to that day and just tell myself that everything was fine. My first piece of advice is one …

Indiana INTERNnet: What is your current position and what do you do?
