Letā€™s Wrap It Up

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

And Iā€™m not talking gifts here people! Though the holidays are coming up quickly, for some of you that fateful time that your precious internship ends is looming in the near future as well. Yes, I know Iā€™m excited for all of the traditions I celebrate, but donā€™t let these last few weeks go by without accomplishing any work with your internship! These last few weeks are the time to make all of your hard work count by following these few tips:

Wrap up any projects/assignments you have. Please do not be that intern that leaves unfinished work left for a new intern to finish. Itā€™s hard enough on your first day at your internship and they really donā€™t need to be tidying up your leftovers. Get a recommendation letter. Any notable intern supervisor will gladly write you …

Homework for the Holidays

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

So I realize the title of this post may scare most readers away because who really wants to do homework over the holidays? But I promise you if you do just a little work, it will pay off tremendously in the end.

Anyone still reading out there? Moving onā€¦

The homework I am assigning to you is looking for that summer internship! (See itā€™s not so badā€¦). A summer internship is your time to shine and show off all that knowledge that you learn during school. Internships also provide an excuse to get away for 2-3 months to wherever you want to go! Participating in a summer internship can help you find what you want to do for the rest of your life, which is pretty important to happiness if you ask me. You can learn so much from other co-workers …

Appreciate & Communicate

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

No matter where you work, there is most likely going to be someone that you just donā€™t see eye-to-eye with.Ā  Letā€™s face it ā€“ itā€™s inevitable that you arenā€™t going to get along with every single person you meet in your entire life.Ā  In the work place, it is even more prone to happen because you are surrounded by the same people for at least 40 hours a week.

Unless if you are one of those ā€œI get along with everyone all the time no matter whatā€ kinds of people (which is rare, and if you are one of those people, I congratulate you) you will experience feelings of frustration with other co-workers.Ā  These feelings happen especially when you donā€™t understand where the other person is coming from.Ā  This can happen often when you work with people with different types of …

Just Give It Time

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

When I was younger, I went through phases where I would change my mind about what career I wanted.Ā  I had dreams of becoming a hair stylist, chef, nurse, teacher ā€“ you name it, I wanted to be it.Ā  However, once I got to college, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do.

I went with the ā€œundecidedā€ route during my first semester of college to tryĀ to figure out what the heck I wanted to do with the rest of my life.Ā  I first decided to try out interior design, mainly because I liked the idea of being able to decorate my own house for free.Ā  Once enrolled in one interior design class, I realized that this was not for me.Ā  Not knowing what direction to take, I began to feel overwhelmed. How was I supposed to figure out …

To Blog Or Not To Blog

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

By now everyone pretty much knows to keep their Facebook free of any wild and crazy pictures and ludicrous statuses. This fact is old news by now (or at least I hope so). But what about blogging? Can you blog on your own free will without worrying about future employers reading and analyzing every word you write? The answer is yes. Well, urm, sort of.

You can have a blog that isnā€™t professionally related, but you MUST be careful at what you write about. If itā€™s about your life in general, you should be aware of what you reveal. Do you want your future employer to know that you had a 3-day drinking binge to celebrate your birthday? Yeah I didnā€™t think so. If itā€™s a specific type of blog such as a food, fashion, music, etc. be …

Will The Great Internship Please Stand Up?

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

Whatever major you have during college, most students are urged to do as many internships that they can while they are finishing their undergrad. Itā€™s obvious why itā€™s important, I mean how else are you supposed to get experience? Whatā€™s more important to search for is the GREAT internship. I feel as though there are 3 different kinds of internships: the great, the good, and the really bad. Here are few tips for finding the perfect internship.

Before accepting the internship, make sure you ask if you will have a mentor/supervisor. Most companies that provide internships will have a specific person appointed to be in charge of all of the interns. This is extremely important because if you have no one to report to then you may not learn much from the experience. Talk with previous interns from that company. These …

New Blog Author: Brittney Horn

Entry by Brittney Horn, Membership Intern, Greater Lafayette Commerce

Hi everyone! My name is Brittney Horn and I will be submitting blog posts this semester detailing my experience of being an intern! I am currently interning with the Greater Lafayette Commerce in Lafayette, Indiana. My title is ā€œMembership Internā€ but Iā€™m pretty much the ā€œDo whatever is thrown to me internā€ and I love it. Letā€™s rewind a little here though and give you a little background information about me.

I graduated from Purdue University this past May with a degree in Public Relations & Rhetorical Advocacy. I completed two internships during school while also living in a cooperative house and taking on leadership positions during my 3 1/5 years at Purdue (I first went to Indiana University).Ā  These experiences led me to Vail, Colorado for this past summer working with a vacation rental company as their Public Relations Intern. …
