Our Work Expanding to High School Internships
Indiana INTERNnet, the stateâs leading work-based learning matching marketplace, was established in 2001. It was designed to connect Hoosier college students and employers at a time when many postsecondary graduates were leaving Indiana to start their careers. The goal? Stem the âbrain drainâ as more college students learned about and completed internships with Hoosier companies.
Fast forward 20 years. Over 11,000 students have secured internships via IndianaINTERN.net. Â But the robust economy that grew for more than a decade â before COVID-19 pushed the pause button â revealed that keeping college graduates in Indiana wasnât enough for employersâ insatiable demand for talent. Some are looking for students in earlier stages of their education to take on internships.
While a lot of high school students work while in school, theyâre behind fast food counters, babysitting or folding clothes in a department store. Though I learned the importance of a strong work ethic …
New Web Site Features Provide Convenience and Encourage Connections
There is much more to the updated IndianaINTERN.net (IIN) than meets the eye! Along with a fresh new look, weâve added multiple features to the site to enhance the experience for students, employers and educators. These additions make it easier for students and employers to connect.
New features include:
In-Site Messaging
This new feature allows employers to conveniently message students without ever leaving the site. IINâs in-site messaging also makes it easy for employers to recruit applicants. Registered employers can search for interns by keyword, school, major, location and more. After finding students who fulfill the internshipâs needs, employers can send those students a message inviting them to apply.
For example, an employer with a marketing internship in Indianapolis could search for students on the web site who are marketing majors and live in Marion County. Then, theyâre able to view the studentsâ profiles and resumes, and send more information …
EARN Indiana, Earn Mutual Benefits for Employers and Students
Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) are continuing to advocate the importance of internships through the Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program.
EARN Indiana is a mutually-beneficial program for employers and students. Eligible students benefit from a wide variety of positions offering competitive pay and valuable experience. These internships can be used to explore career interests, develop transferable skills, apply academic coursework to the professional world, examine career interests and earn college credit.
Employers with an approved internship can be reimbursed for up to 50% of an eligible internâs wages. Interns can bring a fresh take to the organization and assist with backburner projects. There is also the opportunity for talent acquisition (promoting to full-time positions) and recruitment of other students.
âWe have been very impressed with the (EARN Indiana) program, the interns we connect with and the skills they bring to our department,â …
One, Two, Three. Is EARN Indiana for me?
In 2013, Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) began partnering with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) to facilitate its Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program. EARN Indiana reimburses employers with an approved internship up to 50 percent of each eligible internâs wage.
EARN Indiana doesnât just benefit employers. The program provides eligible students with a wide variety of positions offering competitive pay and valuable experience. These internships can be used to explore career interests, develop transferable skills, apply academic coursework to the professional world, examine career interests and even earn college credit.
â[EARN Indiana] opens up so many positions that will be able to pay you competitively all while gaining tremendous needed experience,â said Johnny Slivka, HR Marketing Intern for Milliner & Associates and EARN Indiana-eligible student.
In order to be eligible for an EARN Indiana internship, a student must:

Ryan Palmore: Making an IMPACT
Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesâ successes.
These are their stories.
Ryan Palmore graduated from IUPUI in August with a BA in philosophy. After completing a summer internship with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), he was hired by the organization as a Student Support Specialist. After several months, he was promoted to Assistant Director â Student Support Services.
Indiana INTERNnet: What did you enjoy about working in a state agency?
Ryan Palmore: Being able to experience firsthand how various public entities operate internally and across institutions–public and private–has greatly increased my awareness of and appreciation for the hard work that goes into seeing that Indiana residents’ needs and wishes are valued.
IIN: It seems lately the value of higher education has been …
Gear Up Now For Summer Internships
The temperature is dropping. The nights are getting longer. That means itâs time to start thinking about ⊠summer internships?
Thatâs right! Many students have begun searching for summer opportunities, and some employers have hired their summer interns already. Like holiday music in the mall, the process seems to start earlier each year.
If your employer utilizes www.IndianaINTERN.net, I encourage you to post your openings soon and begin searching for the perfect intern. Be thorough when describing the expectations and duties so you attract the right type of candidates for the position. Create an intern work plan and offer students as much real-world experience as possible. Remember, you are grooming the future workforce.
However, if your employer has encountered obstacles in creating an internship program, you are not alone. The Indiana Chamberâs 2015 Employer Survey revealed there is work to be done to address barriers to entry and facilitate partnerships …
Offering More Treats and Newer Tricks
Itâs not technically the most wonderful time of the year, but Halloween comes pretty close. One quick stop in our neighborhood and youâd find that Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) is offering more treats and newer tricks than anyone on the block. Before I let you in on my favorites, promise me you wonât show up in your scream mask at my cubicle. Promise me.
“Itâs not technically the most wonderful time of the year…”
It doesnât need a shiny wrapper or a fancy commercial because IINâs most decadent treat is just that deliciously designed. Youâre probably familiar with the former state work-study program. As of the summer of 2013, a new recipe has spiced things up for both students and employers: the Employment Aid Readiness Network program (or EARN for short). With EARN, eligible students have access to resume-building, experiential, paid internships, while employers receive state matching funds in exchange for hiring these …
