From Yard to Office
Johnny Slivka is an HR/Business Development Intern with Milliner & Associates. He will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business this year.
Following my senior year in high school, as some may say, I entered the real world. The first Saturday of the summer is where it all started.
My first day of work ā not sports, not school ā but real work. On this day instead of strapping up my cleats or tying my shoe laces, I was lacing up my boots and was ready to get after it. I was working as part of an installation crew planting trees. Some may not understand the process of planting a tree, but itās very hard work. From digging the hole to moving the tree to cleaning up, it is all physically demanding.
Fast forward four years later and every day I can Iām lacing up my boots …

These are their stories.
Angelique Cassell is a recent graduate ofĀ Calumet College of St. Joseph.
Ā Indiana INTERNnet: How did you become interested in banking?
Angelique Cassell: I was first introduce to banking when I volunteered to job shadow at Centier for a school project. I was intrigued to learn that banking is more than just money safekeeping. There I met with the vice president of HR, and she explained how they are very active in the community.
I applied to become an Enterprise Expansion Opportunity Network (EEON) Associate for internships, and when I learned about the opening at REGIONAL Federal Credit Union, I was so excited. Here is a company dedicated to providing great …
Ashley Griffith: Making an IMPACT
Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā successes.
These are their stories.
Ashley Griffith is a graduate student in the Master of Health Administration program at Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health. After graduation in 2017, she hopes to land a fellowship position in a not-for-profit health system.
Indiana INTERNnet: What got you interested in HR?
Ashley Griffith: I wanted to see how a health system ran from a system-wide perspective. The human resources department is responsible for hiring and maintaining all the leaders and staff for the system, along with countless other duties. Without the HR department, the right people would not be working for the health system; and the system would not be successful in its mission. I respect …
Mentor Guides, Encourages Intern
Madison Foster is a senior at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. She is currently a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.
Having a mentor is a pretty powerful thing.
Itās more than just having someone give you advice. A true mentor not only gives advice, but supports, guides, teaches you, etc. Iāve never really had a mentor before I started here at Milliner & Associates, but I definitely think everyone should have one through college and beyond.

Refrainā¦Reframeā¦Receive
Diane Harrison is a senior at IUPUI Kelley School of Business. She is a Recruiting & HR/Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates.
Have you ever felt like life happens so fast and that you never really have time to do the things you want? Maybe you feel like life is passing you by.
Do you feel like other people get all the ālucky breaksā? If you were presented with some of the same opportunities, you could achieve some of the same successes too. Well, just stop that! Change your perspective and look around you.
What does opportunity really mean? According to the Oxford Dictionary, opportunity is defined as āa set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.ā Because you decided to further your education and enroll in college, this presents you with many opportunities that can help shape you as a person and your future endeavors. Did …
āSoak Up Everything You Canā
Madison Foster is a senior at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. She is currently a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.
How many times in your college career have you heard the words, āYou need to do an internshipā?
I canāt even begin to count the amount of times I heard that phrase. Most of the time I would shrug them off. I work full-time and go to school, I canāt just quit and jump into a temporary job that may or may not pay.
However, as I approached my senior year at the Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis, I finally started to look into internships. My decision was solidified when I spoke to my advisor, who told me it is difficult to get into the HR field with no HR-related experience. So I searched and searched for the perfect internship and …
Intern lets her personality shine
Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, aĀ staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.
In October, I attended the Indiana Means Business Career Fair. It seemed like a normal career fair with students, alumni and employers. It was a unique experience for me, though.
I had the pleasure of attending as an employer and as a student. I got to see how it operated on both ends of the spectrum. I must say, it was extremely interesting and I learned a lot.
I have been to a career fair before, solely as a student. I have been the nervous college kid walking up to an employer, not quite knowing what to say or how to act.
This time, I got to be the employer that nervous college kids approach. I was nervous at first myself, but I was passionate about …
Intern has many reasons to be thankful
Firdas Abamislimova is a senior at IUPUIās Kelley School of Business. She is studying Management, HR and International Studies.
Can you believe Thanksgiving has come and gone?
It seems like I interviewed for my internship with Milliner & Associates (M&A) just a few weeks ago; the time has passed quickly for me.
As the Fall season winds down, this is a great opportunity to contemplate all the things for which we can be thankful.
Here at M&A, we started celebrating Thanksgiving a week before the holiday. On November 19, our team had a pitch in, where everyone shared their homemade goods to show appreciation for each other. In order for our associates to spend a little extra time with family and enjoy the holiday, our office worked a half day on Nov. 25 and was closed the rest of the week. What a great opportunity for a family get-together!

Internship allows student to experience āgray areaā
Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, aĀ staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.
What thoughts come to mind when you think about the word āinternshipā?
Are they positive, negative or somewhere in between? I never really had an opinion about them. My professors kept saying how important they were, but I just couldnāt see the value at the time. Now, Iām disappointed I waited until my senior year to even start applying for an internship, but thereās no point in regretting the past. I can only change the future.
I started applying for internships knowing that they were extremely important and that I needed one to put on my rĆ©sumĆ©. I knew I would gain experience and knowledge, but I had no idea to what extent. My time here at Milliner & Associates is unlike anything I could have imagined. …
First generation college student trailblazing career path
Firdas Abamislimova is a senior at IUPUIās Kelley School of Business. She is studying Management, HR and International Studies.
My name is Firdas, and I am the first member of my family to go to college!
My family moved to the United States 10 years ago when I was only 13 years old. Ā At the time, I already knew that going to college would be a given for me. My parents gave up all their life savings and their loved ones in order to move to the land of opportunities. You see, my parents never had the opportunity to go to college, so they have always dreamed about being able to give the opportunity to their children. Where I am from, going to college was a dream that came true only for the wealthy. Finding a job upon graduation was for those of true Russian ethnicity. Why, you may …
Despite heavy course load, internship is worth it
Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, aĀ staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.
Stress. Overload. Pressure. Worry.
These are a few words that come to mind when I think about working 20 hours a week and taking 18 credit hours this semester.
You know what, though?
Experience. Mentor. Learning. Opportunity. Thankful.
These are a few words that come to mind when I think about my internship.
Still to this day, an entire month after my first day, I am shocked that I get to work at Milliner & Associates for a whole semester. This is an amazing opportunity.
I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and get home at 9:30 p.m. from my evening classes. I have never had problems with time management before. Iāve also never really had a full schedule like this before either. It is hard finding time …
