Virtual Summer Events for Interns

Iā€™m so excited to announce that I am back on the Indiana INTERNnet team for the summer! If you remember my name, you know I was an intern last year through the summer and fall semesters. I am now back as the interim program assistant. It’s good to be back.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many internships around the state. Despite the challenges, employers throughout Indiana arenā€™t letting this stop professional development. Instead, theyā€™re providing virtual opportunities as they strive to prepare the stateā€™s future workforce.

Indiana INTERNet and other Indiana organizations are offering free events to enjoy from the comfort of your own home while learning from career professionals in a wide range of areas. Young professionals can use these opportunities to understand and develop new skills by understanding personal branding, learning how to utilize LinkedIn and much more.

While these experiences may be different than what many are …

Meet the Intern: Emily Combs

Greetings!

Iā€™m Emily, the Outreach Intern here at Indiana INTERNnet this summer. I feel grateful and excited for the opportunity to spend the next several months promoting experiential learning in my home state!

Iā€™m originally from Fort Wayne, where I attended Homestead High School and had my first internship experiences as a senior there. I really appreciate the freedom I had to gain professional experience before college, and thatā€™s a major part of why Iā€™m so excited about joining the Indiana INTERNnet team now. This is my fifth formal internship, so I guess you could say itā€™s a passion! Last summer I was a part-time intern at an Indianapolis nonprofit called Tangram and at Prudentialā€™s Indiana Financial Group. My time in both companies taught me how to apply what I had been learning in the classroom to actual projects and problems.

Iā€™m a rising senior at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, …

Kayla’s Goodbye to Indiana INTERNnet

This is my last post here on IndianaINTERN.net and while I am so incredibly sad to leave, I am so excited for what the future holds. That is why internships are so amazing, you get a shortened amount of time to get your feet wet in a career field and see what the future could potentially hold. I know I have said this a lot but starting my internship search and experience early has been a huge impact and influence on my life. I hope all you Indiana interns out there you are stepping out of your comfort zone and applying for as many internships out there. I hope that my blogs either made you laugh or gave you some sort of insight to being an intern or college student.

Indiana INTERNnet Team:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Coming into this position I was so unaware of what I …

What We’re Thankful For

Since Thanksgiving is almost here, the Indiana INTERNnet team thinks on what they’re grateful for.

Kayla Walke, Intern: I am thankful for everyone here at Indiana INTERNnet. This has been the best place to start off my professional career. From the people I have met to the opportunities I have been exposed to, I am so incredibly grateful for this opportunity to be able to grow and learn in such an amazing atmosphere. To everyone at the Chamber and the whole INTERNnet team, thank you for the constant support, advice, and kindness throughout these past couple of months. From board meetings to events, I have been able to learn so much knowledge that is not taught in the classroom.

Angela Taylor, Program Assistant: Iā€™m thankful this year was full of change, good and bad, because with change comes growth. I love working with a team of fun, food-centric people. My …

Things to Do in Indiana This Fall

Itā€™s currently my favorite season and I know a lot of othersā€™ around the office. The air is crisp, closets are in need of an upgrade, and the leaves are changing. While a lot of these blogs are based on tips and advice when navigating the workplace as an intern, we are still young which means we need to have some fun every once in a while. Indiana has some really fun activities that you can do throughout the fall. I thought I would do the research for you and create a list of everything you need to do this fall.

Youā€™re welcome in advance.

Staying on as a Fall Intern

I’m so excited to say that I will be staying on the Indiana INTERNnet team through the fall! With the summer coming to an end, I was more and more sad with each passing day that I would have to leave this amazing team that I have been able to work with. When I was asked to stay on through the fall, I was ecstatic and so proud of myself.

Iā€™m so thankful for this opportunity to continue to grow and learn with Indiana INTERNnet. I know that this summer Iā€™ve learned so much, but thereā€™s still so much for me to learn. I love growing and learning in this environment and canā€™t wait to see what the fall will hold.

To everyone that read my posts or watched my videoā€™s for Indiana INTERNnetā€™s YouTube channel, thank you. Iā€™m so excited to continue creating content for interns all around Indiana.

Emily Sclafani: Reflecting on a Summer Internship

Purdue University rising senior Emily Sclafani joined Matchbook as a Communications intern this summer, before going back to complete her major in public relations and strategic communication. At Purdue, Emily is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America, public relations officer for the Purdue Italian Club, and is in Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Dance is one of her passions, and sheā€™s a member of the dance company Higher Ground at Purdue. With Matchbook, Emily learned more about public relations strategy and technique as they function in the real world, as well as translating her skill sets and knowledge to create meaningful work for clients that have a purpose.

An internā€™s greatest fear is that they will spend their summer making coffee trips and doing busy work. At Matchbook, that is not the case. Right from the start, we were given real, hands-on work for …

Intern Extravaganza at the Indiana State Fair

Last week Indiana INTERNnet hosted the final Summer Engagement Event of the summer at the Indiana State Fair. The event allowed interns from all over the state to come and network while enjoying an iconic Indiana event. It was a day full of networking, prizes, games, and a lot of fun.

The event started off with hearing from a returning State Fair intern, Mary O’Connor. It was a great chance for interns to hear about the importance of internships. She also talked about how helpful they can be when trying to find what the future holds. Mary’s current area of study is in a science-based field, but her internship is in HR. She highlighted that there are still many learning opportunities with internships that can be used in any career path.

Interns in attendance were also able to hear from Julie Schrader from Butler University. She gave helpful tips on …

Indiana Intern Day 2019

With our friends from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, on July 25th, 2019 the first ever Indiana Intern Day took place at the Statehouse Market. Interns were able to take a break from their crazy schedules and relax with some food trucks and friends.

For those that were not able to make it to the Statehouse, social media was blowing up all day with posts celebrating interns and all the hard work they do. Employers showed their support and appreciation for their interns by pledging to celebrate and spreading the word about Indiana Intern Day.

The meetup was a great way for local organizations to show their interns how much they mean to them and give them a chance to spend some time with coworkers outside of the office.

Whether it was surprise coffee and donuts or going to fun outings, employers celebrated the day by showing their support …

Internships: Expectations Versus Reality

For most people there is a clear picture of what comes to mind when hearing the word ā€œintern.ā€ The scared, intimidated college student that brings coffee when needed, and stands by the copier making copies for everyone in the office. I thought the same thing for the longest time. Now I know there is so much more than just coffee and copies.

Internships give students an opportunity to get real life experience in a field they are interested in. internships allow for students to gain professional experience before they graduate from college and prepare them for when it is time to look for full-time employment.

More and more internships are allowing interns to choose projects to work on throughout their time at the company. This allows for the student to walk away with an excellent resume builder. With help and guidance along the way, interns can create great projects and …

Want to Work for NASA? Volunteer!

Alexandra Forsythe is a student at Indiana Tech. She is a double major in electrical engineering and computer engineering with minors in CS and math. Alexandra is currently working as a year-round intern for Ultra Electronics USSI.Ā

Hi! Iā€™m Alexandra (ā€œAlexā€) Forsythe. Iā€™ve been fortunate to have worked as an intern for NASA, Raytheon, and Ultra Electronics USSI. I designed a mission critical circuit board for NASA that will be used in an upcoming launch. For Raytheon, I programmed artificial neural networks. Iā€™m a year-round intern for Ultra Electronics USSI, where I have been placed in charge of a new innovative product, and Iā€™ll be an FPGA/ASIC design engineering intern for Intel next summer. At Indiana Tech, Iā€™m a double major in electrical engineering and computer engineering with minors in CS and math, and Iā€™m an officer in four student organizations.

You need an internship, but what else should …

Developing your Companyā€™s Talent Pipeline

Each IMPACT Awards season, I am always impressed to see the number of Intern of the Year nominations that either mention the employer offering the intern a full-time position, or that the employer plans to offer the intern a permanent position after they graduate.

From the intern who strove to finish his case study with zero errors, to the intern who helped complete a large IT project two months ahead of schedule, employers are realizing that some of their best talent lies within their internship program. And, with Indianaā€™s unemployment rate being close to zero, this couldnā€™t be a better time for that realization.

According to Glassdoor, it takes the average U.S. employer 24 days to hire a new employee. By using an internship program as a talent pipeline, companies wouldnā€™t have to worry about that waiting period to fill entry-level positions. Plus, internships are a trial period that can …

Why it’s Worth it to Stay in Indiana

If youā€™re attending school in Indiana, youā€™re probably thinking about what your future plans are. When I attended Butler University, it always sounded like everyone wanted to go somewhere else after graduationā€¦New York, California, Washington D.C., and so on. I think part of the reason why people want to move somewhere else after graduation is because they arenā€™t aware of everything Indiana has to offer. Here are a few reasons why itā€™s worth it to stay in Indiana.

Indiana has the best of both worlds.

In 2016, a study of the best housing markets for millennials came with a catch ā€“ the cities with the best housing markets had almost no jobs to offer, and the best job markets meant higher housing costs. Cheap housing usually goes hand in hand with poor job markets. However, Indianapolis made the list of the top 10 most affordable metro areas for cost per …

State of Change: Why Itā€™s Important to Share Your Story

ā€œState of Changeā€ is a documentary that aired Sept. 6 on WFYI. For those who missed it (itā€™s now available online), the film follows three Indiana students ā€“ Shannon, Dengke and Jaedyn ā€“ as they take a road trip around the state, interviewing different professionals in some of Indianaā€™s leading industries. Each student comes from a unique background and has questions about their future that theyā€™re looking to answer.

It shows a time many know well, whether youā€™re a high school or college student; an entry-level or seasoned professional. The transition from graduating high school to entering college and charting the path for your future can be a difficult one.

The interviews led to valuable lessons: the path to your ideal career doesnā€™t have to be linear, a career fieldā€™s work might differ from your assumptions and the importance of interacting with a variety of people in a field youā€™re …
