Intern Extravaganza at the Indiana State Fair

Last week Indiana INTERNnet hosted the final Summer Engagement Event of the summer at the Indiana State Fair. The event allowed interns from all over the state to come and network while enjoying an iconic Indiana event. It was a day full of networking, prizes, games, and a lot of fun.

The event started off with hearing from a returning State Fair intern, Mary O’Connor. It was a great chance for interns to hear about the importance of internships. She also talked about how helpful they can be when trying to find what the future holds. Mary’s current area of study is in a science-based field, but her internship is in HR. She highlighted that there are still many learning opportunities with internships that can be used in any career path.

Interns in attendance were also able to hear from Julie Schrader from Butler University. She gave helpful tips on …

Preparing for the End of Your Internship: Takeaways from the Indiana State Fair Event

Last Friday, the Indiana INTERNnet team joined over 50 interns at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for another summer intern engagement event.

Attendees played a round of trivia for a chance to win donated prizes ā€“ it was the perfect way to make sure everyone was wide awake and engaged. After buzzing in for questions about Indianapolis, Indiana and the State Fair, the interns were fired up and ready for the morningā€™s career development session.

Samantha Martin, assistant director of the Ball State University Career Center, was eager to take the floor and keep up the energy in the room. To start, she had participants split into groups for a unique networking game where everyone was asked to make a chain of facts that each of their internships had in common. The winning team took home ā€œFair Bucksā€ and Crew Car Wash coupons for connecting 66 facts into a story about …

The program began with welcoming remarks from Indiana INTERNnet Executive Director Janet Boston, followed by an overview of the fairā€™s festivities by Alexis Behnkendorf, marketing manager at the Indiana State Fair.

Next on our stage was the keynote speaker, Ashley Miser, community and events manager at IndyHub. She spoke about connecting with Indianapolis, and how it is a great place to work and grow. Miser also admitted she is a foodie and will gladly recommend local eateries to try!

ā€œItā€™s really important for us [at IndyHub] to make sure people know that you can curate your lifestyle in Indianapolis and that our city is a makerā€™s space,ā€ said Miser.

Stis graduated from Indiana University with a major in health administration and a minor in human resource management.

Indiana INTERNnet: Describe your internship with The Indiana State Fair (ISF). What was the most valuable experience?

Madison Stis: My internship at the ISF was the best experience I couldā€™ve had. I was shown major aspects of human resources in a very short time period and received excellent hands-on experience. Learning to Trust Your Abilities

Dylan Radford is a senior at Indiana Wesleyan University, studying Strategic Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. He plans to graduate in December of 2016. He is one of two Marketing & Public Relations interns at the Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America.

I canā€™t begin to tell you the number of times that Iā€™ve heard, ā€œTake your student status as an opportunity to gain informational interviews, talk to professionals in the workforce and even shadow employers in their work environment. It wonā€™t be as easy once you lose that status.ā€

Iā€™m currently more than halfway through my summer internship with one semester left of college. The amount of advice that Iā€™ve received from a number of people in the office here at the Crossroads of America Council (CAC), Boy Scouts of America can sometimes be repetitive, but also rewarding in its own way. Sitting down …

Networking, Financial Guidance and Funnel Cakes

Last Friday, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the third (and final) intern engagement event of the summer. The interns were ready for a full day of fun, which started with a round of networking bingo!

Each player searched for a fellow intern who matched a description on the bingo card. For example, an intern who has studied abroad or one has complete multiple internships. Once a row or column was completed, the player was entered in a drawing for Fair Bucks (dollar-amounted vouchers to be used only at the Indiana State Fair). Janet Boston, Executive Director of Indiana INTERNnet, announced the winners-all three were Salesforce intern- during her welcoming speech.

The entertainment continued with two representatives from the Indiana State Fair making an on-stage appearance. Mark Anderson, Director of Human Resources at the Indiana State Fair Commission, thanked everyone for coming and discussed …

Ending on a Sweet Note

This is a guest blog by Armenda Boyer, a sophomore at Purdue University. She is currently working toward a dual major in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Economics. This past summer, she was an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I accepted an offer to work as an education intern at the Indiana State Fair. Of course, I expected to have the opportunity to work with children and to share my love of all-things agriculture. And I was able to do just that! What I didnā€™t expect to do involved 6,500 pounds of caramel corn and a national television show…

The Worldā€™s Largest Popcorn Ball tipped the scales at 6,510 pounds. Check out my last post to see how this massive sphere of popcorn and sugar came together to break a world record! The popcorn ball …

A Record-Breaking Internship: Making the Worldā€™s Largest Popcorn Ball

This is a guest blog by Armenda Boyer, a sophomore at Purdue University. She is currently working toward a dual major in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Economics. This past summer, she was an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission.

I spent last summer working as an education intern at the Indiana State Fair. Along with the everyday, agricultural education outreach, my internship provided me numerous unique opportunities. And I mean truly unique!

Each year the State Fair highlights an agricultural commodity produced in Indiana.Ā  If you visited the fairgrounds August 2-18 you probably recognized the 2013 theme:Ā  Year of Popcorn. This field crop was apparent at each turn of the fairgroundsā€”from the child-friendly popcorn maze to the red and white striped, popcorn container-inspired gift shop on Main Street. The focal point of the popcorn theme was certainly the Worldā€™s Largest Popcorn Ballā€”a 3-ton caramel corn …

That’s Not A Barn – It’s Not Red!

This is a guest blog by Armenda Boyer, a sophomore at Purdue University. She is currently working toward a dual major in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Economics. This past summer, she was an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission.Ā Ā

ā€œWhere are we going?ā€ asked a wide-eyed little boy as I led his summer camp group to the Mac Reynoldā€™s Barn at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

As an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission, my team and I often hosted student field trips. My favorite days working at the fair were the days when children flooded the Fairgrounds to learn about agriculture. This summer, I realized that helping children learn is one of the most fulfilling things I can do. When that learning is regarding agriculture, an industry I am passionate about, I am even more excited to share information.

I answered the eager …

Three Internships Prep For Big-Girl Job

This is a post by Ball State University graduate Kelsey McPheeters. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in public relations from Ball State University in May 2013, Kelsey McPheeters joined LMV Consulting as the marketing and communications intern. Not only does she maintain client websites and update social media, but also develops newsletters, among other various tasks.

As graduation was approaching, I began my job search hoping to land an account executive position with a public relations agency in Indianapolis. Early in my search, it became apparent to me that the positions I wanted to apply for required agency experience, or post-graduation experience.

Although I had two non-agency internships (Special Events at Indiana State Fair and Marketing/PR at IU Health Ball Memorial) under my belt, I decided to turn to Indiana INTERNnet to look for a third. After all, the third timeā€™s a charm, right?

Embracing the ā€œFairestā€ Things in Life

Entry by Courtney Sampson, Marketing and Communications Intern, Indiana State Fair

Let it be known to all! Hereā€™s my new sloganā€¦maybe Iā€™ll suggest it to the ā€œHead Fredā€ of the Indiana State Fair. Probably not. Anyway, here it goes ā€“ The 2010 Great Indiana State Fair ā€“ Making Memories Happen.

OK ā€“ but really, this one-line slogan sums up my entire summer! Thereā€™s been no shortage of things to do around here; I canā€™t say Iā€™m surprised, though. The Indiana State Fair draws more than 900,000 visitors over 17 days. Hereā€™s a taste of my favorite fair memories:

10 ā€“ Riding The Blizzard with my co-worker, Kris Karolā€¦AFTER he ate 2 pieces of fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, and water. Good thing he didnā€™t drink Pepsi. It might have put ā€˜em over the edge. Oh yeah, and he sat on the outside, so I got to slam …

Transitioning from Intern to Full-time Employee

Entry by Courtney Sampson, Marketing and Communications Intern, Indiana State Fair

I havenā€™t submitted an entry to Indiana INTERNnation in awhile, but thatā€™s because Iā€™ve been extremely busy taking advantage of the 12ā€¦15ā€¦18 hour days that my internship requires! Itā€™s been really fun working at the Indiana State Fair; I canā€™t believe weā€™re finally in full-swing. As I write this, the State Fair is at the Ā½ way mark. Whatā€™s this mean for you? It means you get to read an entry from me, and it means if you havenā€™t attended the Fair yet, time is running out ā€“ what are you waiting for?

Donā€™t worry, Iā€™m finishing pitching the Fair. In other newsā€¦Iā€™ve had a few opportunities come up throughout the past week. The good news? Potentially a job. The bad news? Iā€™m still taking it day-by-day at the Fair! But, as internships wrap up, it got me thinkingā€¦how …
