Virtual Internships: A Game-Changer

Itā€™s theĀ unofficialĀ summer of virtual internships ā€” weā€™re celebrating the successes and sharing the struggles that come with it. Be on the lookout for a blog post about virtual internships every Friday!

Author Bio: Joy Burton is the marketing and public relations intern at Artisan Electronics, Inc. She is a recent journalism/public relations graduate from Indiana University Bloomington in the Class of 2020. Joy will be a first-year Masterā€™s student at Syracuse University this fall.

I was plagued with uncertainty applying for a summer internship in the midst of a pandemic. As a public relations and advertising student, Iā€™m accustomed to the internship hiring process taking place between March and April. This year by the middle of March, many internships were off the table. When I found Artisan Electronics, the number of interviews Iā€™d already participated in reached the double digits, and many programs had cancelled their …

Author Bio: I am a rising junior at Indiana University ā€“ Bloomington (Class of 2022). I am majoring in Finance and Accounting with minors in Economics, Mathematics, and Spanish. I am currently an Investment Analyst Intern at Valeo Financial Advisors in Indianapolis, where I conduct research to support our advisors on the investments portion of their comprehensive financial planning service for their clients.

Last Thursday, I got out of my car and headed up the stairs to the third floor to start my day with the obligatory waves, head nods, and good-mornings, just like every other day at the office. The only difference was that I hadnā€™t been to the office in nearly three months. …

Zack Chambers: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on February 26, 2019 at the 13th Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon. Though the event is over, and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā€™ successes.

Ā

These are their stories.

Zack Chambers graduates from Indiana University in May 2019 with a degree in Marketing and Professional Sales. He completed an internship with Business Improvement Group.

Indiana INTERNnet: What made you interested in pursuing a Business Management degree?

Zack Chambers: I will be graduating from Indiana University this May with a Bachelorā€™s in Marketing and Professional Sales. I always say that I have come to marketing backwards. I started out with a love of writing that brought me to media and editing. However, I realized my lifelong passion for business could be married with this in the field of marketing, particularly in digital marketing and content creation

From Intern to Founder: Wyatt Wells

Wyatt Wells is co-founder and chief marketing officer at The Bee Corp, an AgTech startup in Bloomington. Wyatt graduated from Indiana University in 2016.

ā€œWhat do you want to be when you grow up?ā€

If you asked me this question 10 years ago, I wouldā€™ve replied, ā€œIā€™m going to play third base for the Boston Red Sox.ā€ If you asked me three years ago, my answer wouldā€™ve been, ā€œLet me get back to you on that.ā€

Itā€™s the clichĆ© question nearly all students dread hearing. Responses tend to fall into three categories: the vague (ā€œI want to work in [medicine/software/sales]ā€), the naĆÆve and oddly specific (ā€œIā€™m going to be a senior cloud systems engineer at Facebookā€) and the aimless (ā€œI just want to do something that makes me happyā€).

Flashback to 2015

Entering my senior year at IU, I belonged under the aimless category. I became an expert at …

Hands-on Learning

Betsy Adams is currently serving as the talent acquisition intern at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance (IFBI)Ā in the talent management department. She is a rising senior at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana studying human resource management and business. She will graduate in May of 2019 and is anxiously looking forward to kick starting her career in human resources.

On Wednesday, June 27, I had the opportunity, with the other 24 IFBI interns, to spend my afternoon at Gleanerā€™s Food Bank of Indiana volunteering and serving the Indianapolis community. Our internship program provides us with a number of off-site field trips as opportunities to spend time outside of the home office to better understand the impact of the company and serve the community in a hands-on way.

It was fascinating to see our work dynamics come together in both a competitive and fun way. The healthy spirit of competition allowed us …

Jack-of-All-Trades or Master of None?

I went to a small high school with extremely limited class choices. The only language available to take was Spanish, and the electives didnā€™t go much beyond drama or choir. When I decided to go to Indiana University, I was so excited to have a variety of options. IU is hugeā€”I could learn anything I wanted to! I could learn how to write code, then turn around and read about famous Mexican muralists, then get some advice from a Pulitzer-winning journalist. (All things Iā€™ve done, by the way. Thanks, IU!) The possibilities were endless.

As I progressed in my college career, I realized how difficult it is to master more than a few skills or subjects. It seemed like every job opportunity I came across wanted me to have infinite abilitiesā€”writing, editing, graphic design, social media, videography, photography, web design, event planning, marketing, and the list goes on. Overwhelmed by …

Meet the New Intern!

Hi, all! Iā€™m so excited to be the marketing and videography intern this summer at Indiana INTERNnet! Iā€™m going into my senior year of college at Indiana University, where I study journalism and Spanish. I was born and raised in Indianapolis. I love this city, and am thrilled to be working right downtown.

Iā€™ve been creating videos for fun since high school, but I never thought about making it into a career until an IU student organization I’m involved with,Ā RUF, asked me if I would make videos for them.

This is the first time that Indiana INTERNnet has taken on a marketing and videography intern, and Iā€™m so glad they did! But why hire a videography intern?

In our Internet-immersed culture, video can make a huge impact! Take it from the countless viral videos floating around on social media these daysā€”people love a good video, and a good video will …

Ben Verdi: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā€™ successes.

These are their stories.

Ben Verdi is a second-year graduate student at Indiana University (Bloomington). He served as a Governorā€™s Public Service summer intern with the Department of Workforce Development.

Indiana INTERNnet: How did you become interested in government work?

Ben Verdi: I got interested in government for the same reasons I was initially interested in public service. I want to lend every skill and talent I’ve been fortunate enough to cultivate back to my community and country at large. Government work appeals to me as a wonderful way to go about making that kind of a difference in people’s lives, but it’s not the only way. People can be involved in public service …

Summer Internship to Offer Experience, Adventure

Summer is finally here!

For students, this time of year calls for vacations, sun burn and poolside fun, not to mention a luxurious break from classrooms and exams.

Summertime is also the perfect time to dive into the workforce and build professional and personal skills. This summer, I chose to pursue a marketing internship with Indiana INTERNnet. I recently graduated from The Media School at Indiana University with a Bachelorā€™s degree in Telecommunications. With the help of IUā€™s amazing career services, every summer since I was a freshman IĀ have beenĀ fortunate to have internships in Indianapolis with some great employers.

Throughout my collegiate experience at IU, I used every summer to my advantage. I was a summer camp counselor as a freshman, an intern at the Indy Hostel as a sophomore and a marketing and promotions intern forĀ Do317 as a junior. Even though some opportunities might not have been the most …

Ashley Griffith: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā€™ successes.

These are their stories.

Ashley Griffith is a graduate student in the Master of Health Administration program at Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health. After graduation in 2017, she hopes to land a fellowship position in a not-for-profit health system.

Indiana INTERNnet: What got you interested in HR?

Ashley Griffith: I wanted to see how a health system ran from a system-wide perspective. The human resources department is responsible for hiring and maintaining all the leaders and staff for the system, along with countless other duties. Without the HR department, the right people would not be working for the health system; and the system would not be successful in its mission. I respect …

The journey Alex Eaton embarked on afterĀ his sophomore year has come full circle.

A recent Indiana University graduate, Eaton, utilized Indiana INTERNnet to apply for an internship position at Pete the Planner, a small financial wellness company based in Indianapolis founded by Peter Dunn. Dunn is an author, radio personality and financial expert.

Now, Eaton has transitioned into his new full-time role as the Director of eLearning at Pete the Planner.

While his job involves marketing Pete the Plannerā€™s online platforms, he wears many hats during the day.

ā€œIā€™m reaching out to a perspective client and starting the sales process, Iā€™m running the actual product demos all the way to helping sign them on as clients, and Iā€™m working with them once they are clients to make sure everything is working,ā€ Eaton explains.

Matthew Uhls: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 4, 2015, at the 9th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā€™ successes.

These are their stories.

IIN: Tell me about your academic path and how some of your other internships supplemented that.

MU: I majored in Classical Studies with the intention of being a foreign languageĀ teacher. But, as college set in and I started thinking about career paths, I realized how competitive Classical Studies can be. So, I thought about other opportunities that would be impactful on people lives.

I realized financial services is something almost everyone needs guidance with. I was hired for the Northwestern Mutual summer program selling life, property and casualty insurance. I utterly failed at this; I’m not a very good salesman.

After graduating from IU Bloomington, I struggled with what to …

Meredith Gentry: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 4, 2015, at the 9th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesā€™ successes.

These are their stories.

Indiana INTERNnet: You are a sophomore at IU Bloomington majoring in neuroscience and biology. What prompted you to take an internship in the insurance field?

Meredith Gentry: Internships are an essential part of exploring career opportunities and preparing for life after college. I wanted to get a feel for going to work every day, reporting to a supervisor, and collaborating with coworkers. I became aware of the internship openings at Baldwin & Lyons through some friends, who had just as positive experiences as I did.

IIN: What are one or two projects that really allowed you to grow professionally?

MG: While there were still assignments that had to be managed …
