Greetings!
Iām Emily, the Outreach Intern here at Indiana INTERNnet this summer. I feel grateful and excited for the opportunity to spend the next several months promoting experiential learning in my home state!
Iām originally from Fort Wayne, where I attended Homestead High School and had my first internship experiences as a senior there. I really appreciate the freedom I had to gain professional experience before college, and thatās a major part of why Iām so excited about joining the Indiana INTERNnet team now. This is my fifth formal internship, so I guess you could say itās a passion! Last summer I was a part-time intern at an Indianapolis nonprofit called Tangram and at Prudentialās Indiana Financial Group. My time in both companies taught me how to apply what I had been learning in the classroom to actual projects and problems.

Connecting Interns to Indy
More than 75 interns from companies in the Indianapolis area gathered at the historic Fountain Square Theatre building on June 1 to take advantage of Indy Intern Connect. Our second intern engagement event of the summer was a casual evening event, hosted by the Indy Chamber. Attendees had an opportunity to network with Indianapolis business leaders and fellow interns while enjoying free drinks, duckpin bowling and a view of the city skyline from the Rooftop Garden.
A welcoming host, longtime Fountain Square Theatre owner Linton Calvert, shared the story of the building with the crowd. Originally constructed in 1928, it has hosted many types of businesses and witnessed the surrounding neighborhood continuously change. It stands tall today after being restored by Calvert and is an Indianapolis landmark.

How Important is Networking, Really?
College students hear it again and again ā network, network, network! However, building and maintaining professional relationships is often not high on a studentās list of priorities. The thought of initiating a conversation can be intimidating. Even once introductions and connections have been made, it is difficult for individuals to keep in touch. Schedules are typically overflowing with academic, financial, and personal responsibilities, which does not leave a lot of room for attending networking events. It can be easy to put off networking and ignore event opportunities, with the hopes your schedule will be less full later. That is not the case. Forty-nine percent of todayās professionals say that it is difficult to maintain relationships with their network due to a lack of free time, according to a 2017 LinkedIn survey.

Interns and Mentors Invited to Five Summer Events
Interns and internship supervisors from organizations throughout central Indiana are invited to events at The Childrenās Museum of Indianapolis (May 31), Fountain Square Theatre Rooftop Garden (June 1), Indianapolis Zoo (July 10), Indiana State Fair (August 3) and meet@TheChallenge (August 23). Each will offer professional development and networking opportunities in addition to time to explore the venues and have fun.
The Childrenās Museum of IndianapolisĀ event will begin at 9 a.m. with an interactive workshop. Prior to that, check-in will be held at 8:30 a.m., and interns will be invited to participate in a networking game. Following the workshop, attendees will be free to explore The Childrenās Museum until it closes at 5 p.m. Guests will have access to The Riley Childrenās Health Sports Legends Experience. Volunteering at Catch the Stars Foundation
Yesterday, Allison, Karissa, and I volunteered with the Catch the Stars Foundation, to help them get ready for their 12th annual Back to School Celebration!
The Catch the Stars Foundation was founded in 2004 by Tamika Catchings and her sister, Tauja Catchings, who serves as the Director of Operations. The Foundation coordinates multiple programs to support local youth āwith a specific emphasis on supporting and assisting under-served and low to moderate income communities throughout the city,ā according to their website.
One of their efforts, the Back to School Celebration, is a community event to motivate students and get them excited for the school year. This event will be held on Sunday, July 23, at the Washington Park Family Center. One thousand pre-registered students (grades K-12) will receive a free backpack stuffed with school supplies. The celebration is open to the community, there will be free food, entertainment, prizes …

The past few summers, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce has treated their employees to a daytime baseball game at Victory Field. It is a great way to step away from the computer and connect with co-workers. The sunny weather, hot dogs and peanuts only add to the fun!

Interns Connect for Indy’s Future
Last Friday, the Indy Chamber hosted Indy Intern Connection in partnership with Indiana INTERNnet at the Fountain Square Theatre Building. Employers and interns from all over the city were invited to hang out on the rooftop garden, play duckpin bowling, and network.
The Director of Policy & Civic Engagement at the Indy Chamber and Indiana INTERNnet Board of Directors Member, Matt Impink, played a big part in organizing the event. He said that one of the main goals of the event was to encourage connections between interns, who will ideally be the future professionals of Indiana. He, and many other groups in Indiana, hope to encourage young HoosiersĀ to continue to live and work here. This combats the ābrain drainā issueāthat many of Indianaās best and brightest leave Indiana to work elsewhere.

The holiday season in Indianapolis always starts with a flash! The Circle of Lights is a wonderful tree-lighting tradition that happens the day after Thanksgiving. Although the Soldier & Sailors Monument isnāt actually a tree, it does a great job of creating holiday cheer for the millions of gatherers each year. It can seem like a breath of fresh air from all of the crazy Black Friday shopping that occurs earlier in the day. Donāt worry if you missed the ceremonial lighting, you can still marvel at the pretty lights by visiting Monument Circle.

On my lunch break one day, I decided to hike up 331 steps to the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument for a birdās eye view of our great city. The elevator was an option for a minimal fee, but I decided to sweat it out.

Summer Internship to Offer Experience, Adventure
Summer is finally here!
For students, this time of year calls for vacations, sun burn and poolside fun, not to mention a luxurious break from classrooms and exams.
Summertime is also the perfect time to dive into the workforce and build professional and personal skills. This summer, I chose to pursue a marketing internship with Indiana INTERNnet. I recently graduated from The Media School at Indiana University with a Bachelorās degree in Telecommunications. With the help of IUās amazing career services, every summer since I was a freshman IĀ have beenĀ fortunate to have internships in Indianapolis with some great employers.

Chelsea DuKate: Besides the general benefits of enhanced productivity and gaining a potential new diverse perspective, employers also have an opportunity to better engage with the early career community. Internship programs can serve as a āselection methodā of sorts for full-time positions within their organization.
Studies have shown that interns hired full-time tend to be more loyal to that organization, which directly impacts labor and turnover costs.Ā Other benefits include theĀ company marketing that goes along with having interns and the increased name recognition and employment branding opportunities.

As person that likes to be the one who knows it all, it can be rather frustrating to come into an internship and realize you know less than you thought. Having a mentor is a pretty powerful thing.
Itās more than just having someone give you advice. A true mentor not only gives advice, but supports, guides, teaches you, etc. Iāve never really had a mentor before I started here at Milliner & Associates, but I definitely think everyone should have one through college and beyond.
