Former Indiana INTERNnet student user utilizes web site as employer
Allison Becker is the HR Generalist at Becker Landscape in Indianapolis, and she oversees recruiting, hiring, employee issues, insurance claims and benefits. She utilized Indiana INTERNnetâs resources as a student and now uses the web site as an employer.
Indiana INTERNnet: Tell us why you love internships!
Allison Becker: Internships are wonderful because they offer so many new experiences for students that they donât receive in a school setting. Students learn to adapt and think on their feet. My internships were vital because I got to work with a variety of people from different socioeconomic and geographic areas and learned how they see the world, especially the working world. For me, learning to interact with people is one of the most rewarding things.
IIN: What internships did you complete as a student?
AB: I completed internships with a nursery called CM Hobbs. I was a research aid for a semester …
The New Era of Marketing
Clayton Maddox is a content marketing intern with National Trade Supply, LLC in Greenwood, IN. He assists with social media accounts, creating content, graphic design, and PPC advertising.
The 60s are often called the Golden Age of Advertising.
âMad Menâ like Donald Draper were the pioneers, with beautifully crafted stories and ideas rolling off the tongue one after the other. The interns only dreamed that they could ever be as witty and cool as them. All ideas were destined for TV, print, billboard or radio.
That was 50 years ago though, and the marketing and advertising industry has changed immensely. Fedoras, plaid suits, smoking and drinking at work are all gone. Even though change is rapid, itâs time marketing classes incorporate modern aspects of marketing.
Creatives like Donald Draper are still essential for marketing agencies, but thereâs a whole new side to marketing that wasnât covered in any of …

Pam Plain Intern of the Year (College/University)
Pam Plain led an international public health initiative as a summer intern with Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.
KTB began to collect breast tissue from women all over the world, and started in Kenya, Africa, where the prevalence of a particularly aggressive type of breast cancer is common. Plain made arrangements for facilities and transportation of medical and surgical supplies and volunteer materials from the United States to Kenya.
âThis involved tens of thousands of dollars, superb communication skills and organizational skills, and an understanding …
Talking Career Options (& Internships) with High School Students
Jack Hope (Hope Plumbing) presenting on the skills gap at Perry Meridian High School
We had the pleasure of presenting Indiana INTERNnet (and Indiana Skills) to eight classes of Perry Meridian High School students last Friday. It was great to see the attention students paid to these important topics â we had students ask us about training for jobs in sonography, truck driving and public safety.
“…many students donât understand their post-secondary options outside of four-year college.”
We talked with the students about the importance of experiential learning no matter what career track you are on.
We had the added pleasure of being joined by Jack Hope, owner of Hope Plumbing in Indianapolis. Hope has become a terrific partner to Ready Indiana with his dedication to encouraging students to consider middle-skill careers. We know the demand and the rewards are there, but we find that many students donât understand their …
That’s Not A Barn – It’s Not Red!
This is a guest blog by Armenda Boyer, a sophomore at Purdue University. She is currently working toward a dual major in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Economics. This past summer, she was an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission. Â
âWhere are we going?â asked a wide-eyed little boy as I led his summer camp group to the Mac Reynoldâs Barn at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
As an education intern for the Indiana State Fair Commission, my team and I often hosted student field trips. My favorite days working at the fair were the days when children flooded the Fairgrounds to learn about agriculture. This summer, I realized that helping children learn is one of the most fulfilling things I can do. When that learning is regarding agriculture, an industry I am passionate about, I am even more excited to share information.
I answered the eager …
Breakfast with Twitter, YouTube and NPR
Would you believe when I started my internship, I had never used Twitter before? Four months and thousands of tweets later, social media is one of my main responsibilities with Indiana INTERNnet. Learning by doing is a wonderful thing.
At the Millennial Impact conference in Indianapolis (#MCON13) on July 18th, I sat at breakfast with none other than Jenna Golden, a leader in Twitterâs Washington, D.C. office, along with Jessica Mason (YouTube) and Danielle Deabler (NPR). I would have never imagined I would dive into social media so deep, so fast.
Throughout the entire conference, speaker after speaker emphasized the importance of allowing Millennials input and control on projects specific to social involvement and movement. This definitely resonates with my experience at Indiana INTERNnet.
Donât worry. I took away some valuable tips from this conference other than choosing the right table at breakfast:

3 Lessons Learned from the Company’s Baseball Outing
Just when I thought my internship with Indiana INTERNnet could not get any more exciting after our staff luncheon at Dickâs Last Resort, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce treated the entire staff to an Indianapolis Indians Baseball game right around the corner at Victory Field. I hurried to wrap up my work for the day before the noon hour. The air in the office was electrified with excitement and the prospect of socializing. The air outside, however, was humid and warm.
After taking my seat alongside my chamber-mates, I thought back to the last time I was at Victory Field. It must have been back in 2010 while I was interning with the Human Resources Department at OneAmerica. The JW Marriott had not graced the panorama of Indy yet. And, I was ready for my first-ever baseball game. My boss at the time bought me a foam finger and …

Interns represented various organizations including Aprimo, ExactTarget, Interactive Intelligence, Mayor Ballardâs Internship Program, the Mental Health Association, Roche Diagnostics, Rook Consulting, and The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis.
Interns trekked all over downtown; they stopped by The Slippery Noodle Inn and the City Market, to the NCAA Hall of Champions and back to Scottyâs Brewhouse for a well-deserved recovery. Interns were challenged with tasks ranging from âtake …
