Meet Chelsea DuKate, Central Indiana Regional Coordinator
In 2015, Indiana INTERNnet launched regional initiatives to increase the number of experiential learning opportunities available to Indiana students. Chelsea DuKate, founder and president of Red Envelope Consulting, is working with employers in Central Indiana at every stage of internship management from development to recruiting to evaluation.
Indiana INTERNnet: Why are internships more important than ever for employers?
Chelsea DuKate: Besides the general benefits of enhanced productivity and gaining a potential new diverse perspective, employers also have an opportunity to better engage with the early career community. Internship programs can serve as a âselection methodâ of sorts for full-time positions within their organization.
Studies have shown that interns hired full-time tend to be more loyal to that organization, which directly impacts labor and turnover costs. Other benefits include the company marketing that goes along with having interns and the increased name recognition and employment branding opportunities.
IIN: How are you helping …
Ryan Palmore: Making an IMPACT
Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesâ successes.
These are their stories.
Ryan Palmore graduated from IUPUI in August with a BA in philosophy. After completing a summer internship with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), he was hired by the organization as a Student Support Specialist. After several months, he was promoted to Assistant Director â Student Support Services.
Indiana INTERNnet: What did you enjoy about working in a state agency?
Ryan Palmore: Being able to experience firsthand how various public entities operate internally and across institutions–public and private–has greatly increased my awareness of and appreciation for the hard work that goes into seeing that Indiana residents’ needs and wishes are valued.
IIN: It seems lately the value of higher education has been …
The Frustration of Not Knowing
Geneva Heerschap is currently enrolled at Butler University where she is studying Marketing. In 2015, she spent a semester abroad in the Netherlands. Heerschap is the spring marketing and public relations intern at Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America.Â
As person that likes to be the one who knows it all, it can be rather frustrating to come into an internship and realize you know less than you thought. The purpose of an internship is to grow and become more knowledgeable about a chosen field of interest. Facing the reality that you know less than what you thought can be hard to grasp.
For one my first projects, I had to write a press release. Once completed, I felt confident in my work, but when I got it back I realized I still had more to learn. It was a bit shocking at first since I hadnât met this …
Mentor Guides, Encourages Intern
Madison Foster is a senior at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. She is currently a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.
Having a mentor is a pretty powerful thing.
Itâs more than just having someone give you advice. A true mentor not only gives advice, but supports, guides, teaches you, etc. Iâve never really had a mentor before I started here at Milliner & Associates, but I definitely think everyone should have one through college and beyond.

Casey Bauchle: Making an IMPACT
Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesâ successes.
These are their stories
Casey Bauchle is a junior at IUPUI. He plans to enroll in graduate school for cognitive psychology upon graduation and conduct research, either at a research institute or a university.
He is also skilled with a yoyo (keep reading to learn more).
Indiana INTERNnet: What field of science are you specializing in? What made you interested in pursuing that?
Casey Bauchle: I specialize in cognitive psychology, specifically how people perceive information and how they react to/store it. I chose this field because I have always had a natural tendency to ponder how people think and how they choose to respond in certain situations.
IIN: What has your research consisted of?

âSoak Up Everything You Canâ
Madison Foster is a senior at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. She is currently a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.
How many times in your college career have you heard the words, âYou need to do an internshipâ?
I canât even begin to count the amount of times I heard that phrase. Most of the time I would shrug them off. I work full-time and go to school, I canât just quit and jump into a temporary job that may or may not pay.
However, as I approached my senior year at the Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis, I finally started to look into internships. My decision was solidified when I spoke to my advisor, who told me it is difficult to get into the HR field with no HR-related experience. So I searched and searched for the perfect internship and …
Making an IMPACT: Sara Jones
The IMPACT Awards Employer of the Year is netlogx! We had a chance to interview one of the employees of netlogx, Sara Jones. Sara started as an intern with the organization and made her way to becoming a full-time consultant. She is a true story of a successful internship!
Indiana INTERNnet: What attracted you to intern at netlogx?
Sara Jones: When I started as an intern at netlogx, I did not have a very deep understanding of netlogx services, but I did know that netlogx was a growing small business with a great culture, which really appealed to me.
IIN: What learning experiences and projects did you have during your internship?
SJ: During my internship, I was able to take ownership of several internal administrative initiatives, but also was assigned part-time to a client project. Being part of the project team was incredibly valuable because it gave me the …
Former Indiana INTERNnet student user utilizes web site as employer
Allison Becker is the HR Generalist at Becker Landscape in Indianapolis, and she oversees recruiting, hiring, employee issues, insurance claims and benefits. She utilized Indiana INTERNnetâs resources as a student and now uses the web site as an employer.
Indiana INTERNnet: Tell us why you love internships!
Allison Becker: Internships are wonderful because they offer so many new experiences for students that they donât receive in a school setting. Students learn to adapt and think on their feet. My internships were vital because I got to work with a variety of people from different socioeconomic and geographic areas and learned how they see the world, especially the working world. For me, learning to interact with people is one of the most rewarding things.
IIN: What internships did you complete as a student?
AB: I completed internships with a nursery called CM Hobbs. I was a research aid for a semester …
Bicentennial Internship Immerses Student in Stateâs Future Visioning
AndrĂ© Zhang Sonera is serving as a Bicentennial Visioning Liaison with the Office of Indiana Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann. The Visioning Project is a Bicentennial legacy project focusing on Indianaâs future. The project brought together thought leaders throughout the state to identify âbig ideasâ for Indianaâs future, which will be compiled into a book thatâs expected to be completed this summer.
Indiana INTERNnet: What have you been responsible for during your internship with the Indiana Bicentennial Visioning Project?
AndrĂ© Zhang Sonera: âAs a Bicentennial Scholar, my role on this project is coordinating the logistics of each (visioning) session. My job requires me to look at the big picture and make sure that all the knots are in place and ready to go for the event. From coordinating the venue to making sure that everything is running smoothly and efficiently for our experts â logistics are an essential component to the …
New Year, New Adventure
The New Year started with an opportunity to learn and gain real-life experience as Indiana INTERNnetâs marketing intern. In December, I had been struggling to find the perfect spring internship until I came across Indiana INTERNnet. Suddenly, there was a plethora of internship opportunities!
I am currently attending my last semester at IUPUI for public relations. I grew up near Bloomington, Indiana in the small town of Spencer. I met my fiancé, Jacob, in high school. He was a football player and I was the equipment manager. Besides football, my true passion in life is animals. I have a Pomeranian, Vada, and a grey short-haired cat, Murphy. They are the best of friends, always chasing each other around the house. After graduation, I hope to work for an animal rescue organization. In the future, I aspire to start my own organization!
Since graduation is right around the …

Intern lets her personality shine
Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, a staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.
In October, I attended the Indiana Means Business Career Fair. It seemed like a normal career fair with students, alumni and employers. It was a unique experience for me, though.
I had the pleasure of attending as an employer and as a student. I got to see how it operated on both ends of the spectrum. I must say, it was extremely interesting and I learned a lot.
I have been to a career fair before, solely as a student. I have been the nervous college kid walking up to an employer, not quite knowing what to say or how to act.
This time, I got to be the employer that nervous college kids approach. I was nervous at first myself, but I was passionate about …
Intern has many reasons to be thankful
Firdas Abamislimova is a senior at IUPUIâs Kelley School of Business. She is studying Management, HR and International Studies.
Can you believe Thanksgiving has come and gone?
It seems like I interviewed for my internship with Milliner & Associates (M&A) just a few weeks ago; the time has passed quickly for me.
As the Fall season winds down, this is a great opportunity to contemplate all the things for which we can be thankful.
Here at M&A, we started celebrating Thanksgiving a week before the holiday. On November 19, our team had a pitch in, where everyone shared their homemade goods to show appreciation for each other. In order for our associates to spend a little extra time with family and enjoy the holiday, our office worked a half day on Nov. 25 and was closed the rest of the week. What a great opportunity for a family get-together!

Gear Up Now For Summer Internships
The temperature is dropping. The nights are getting longer. That means itâs time to start thinking about ⊠summer internships?
Thatâs right! Many students have begun searching for summer opportunities, and some employers have hired their summer interns already. Like holiday music in the mall, the process seems to start earlier each year.
If your employer utilizes www.IndianaINTERN.net, I encourage you to post your openings soon and begin searching for the perfect intern. Be thorough when describing the expectations and duties so you attract the right type of candidates for the position. Create an intern work plan and offer students as much real-world experience as possible. Remember, you are grooming the future workforce.
However, if your employer has encountered obstacles in creating an internship program, you are not alone. The Indiana Chamberâs 2015 Employer Survey revealed there is work to be done to address barriers to entry and facilitate partnerships …
Internships increasingly important in post-graduation job search
A new report from Grace College found that unemployment has fallen about 7% for 20- to 24-year-olds. There are many reasons for upcoming college graduates to be optimistic about their job searches, but there are also noteworthy trends that should keep expectations in check and even inspire extra effort. Internships and other work-and-learn opportunities continue to be a step toward work readiness and, in many cases, job offers.
The Class of 2015 has planned ahead for the future. According to Dan Kadlec of Time, 82% of current seniors considered the availability of jobs in their field before choosing a major â a 7% increase from 2014. The Accenture Strategy 2015 U.S. College Graduate Employment Study backs this up: 63% of 2015 grads were encouraged to pursue a STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), compared to 52% of grads from 2013 and 2014. Jobs in STEM fields are often high-wage and high-demand, …
