What thoughts come to mind when you think about the word âinternshipâ?
Are they positive, negative or somewhere in between? I never really had an opinion about them. My professors kept saying how important they were, but I just couldnât see the value at the time. Now, Iâm disappointed I waited until my senior year to even start applying for an internship, but thereâs no point in regretting the past. I can only change the future.

Indiana INTERNnet began the tradition of celebrating internship excellence nearly a decade ago by launching the annual IMPACT Awards program.
Today, the IMPACT Awards are presented at an annual luncheon honoring Interns of the Year (high school, college and non-traditional categories), Employers of the Year (for-profit and not-for-profit categories) and a Career Development Professional of the Year. Indiana INTERNnet will honor its tenth group of award nominees and winners on Feb. 3, 2016. Co-founder and CMO Angie Hicks of Angieâs List will be the keynote speaker.
Honorees are nominated by the public, and winners are chosen by a panel of impartial judges. Click here to submit your nomination(s) in any or all of the categories by October 23.

Indiana INTERNnet Summer Intern Reflects on Growth
âDo what you are afraid of.â
These are the words of Caryl Auslander, VP of Education and Workforce Development Policy at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. When she said this, she didnât know I accepted this internship at Indiana INTERNnet for that very reason.
Prior to joining this team to help increase talent retention, I was a student plagued by writerâs block, and I had very little social media experience. I decided I wanted to face this head-on.
I was that guy, probably like your parents, who used Facebook just to see who wished me a happy birthday once a year. As far as I was concerned, hashtags were never the character displayed in front of a word to loop a post into a larger conversation. It was always just the number/pound sign to me.

As a new college graduate currently going through the job search process, I am grateful for the experiences and skills I gained through Butler’s internship program. Oftentimes, you gain more than just skills to put on a resume, and those turn out to be things you value most.
In March of my junior year, I was extended an offer to serve as the Development Intern for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Indianapolis. IIN: Your nominator wrote that you âworked to create new training and development opportunitiesâ for employees at Johnson Controls. Thatâs a great experience for an intern!
AB: What I did was create a deck to teach employees about the hiring process at Johnson Controls. There was nothing set up for this and managers were very unsure about the steps they needed to take. There were often many people in the HR office asking questions about next steps. After creating this deck, it was presented and implemented to the automotive interiors division.

Mike Starr, actuarial services intern at Baldwin & Lyons, Inc., is not your average intern. Starr earned his master’s degree in student affairs and spent time in the professional world before an internship sparked a career change.
While Mike Starr did not always know what he wanted to do as a career, he always knew what he liked.
The actuarial services intern at Baldwin & Lyons, Inc. in Carmel realized early on that he liked math and science as well as a team environment. Blending those interests, however, proved more difficult before his current internship.
As a physics major at The Ohio State University, Starr assumed that medical school was in his future. When those plans fell through, Starr went back to the drawing board.

Interview training opens doors

My third and final semester as an intern at Milliner & Associates has been a whirlwind.
The first two weeks I spent shadowing interviews with the Recruiting Manager and Recruiting Specialist to get a firmer grasp on the language we use and expectations we set in that short thirty minutes. Three weeks ago, I conducted my first interview. It was nerve wracking, donât get me wrong, but now I thoroughly enjoy interviewing and all that comes with it.
I am not sure if I was nervous because of the person sitting across from me or the person shadowing me. Having colleagues and my boss shadow my interviews in the first couple of weeks added some extra pressure. However, I knew I needed to hear their feedback. Theyâre professionals, been there done …

I have had a great experience thus far at M&A, and I have learned so much in a short amount of time. This internship has opened my eyes to what recruiting is. I have read about recruiting in my text books, listened to a number of lectures in class and even have recruited a little myself, but I have never been in a true recruiting environment.
Looking back to just a few weeks ago, my whole understanding of recruiting has changed. I saw recruiting firms as the people that call and just ask if you need assistance filling positions, but I was wrong. Recruiting is so much more in depth and a lot more complicated and competitive than I could have imagined.

Advancing our workforce through internships
âAlign,â âengageâ and âadvanceâ turned out to be more than just political buzzwords on Tuesday.
I had the opportunity to attend Align, Engage, Advance: Transforming Indianaâs Workforce cohosted by the Center for Education and Career Innovation and Education Workforce Innovation Network. The conference presented the Indiana Career Councilâs strategic plan, and opened my eyes to the challenges Indiana faces with employment. It also reassured me the Indiana INTERNnet will play a significant role in helping provide paths for career success in Indiana.
The biggest lesson I took away from the day is that experiential learning is a driving force in the efforts to elevate Indianaâs workforce.
Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann said that she and the rest of the Indiana Career Council hope 60% of Indianaâs workforce will have postsecondary credentials by 2025. Don’t doubt the power of experience
Summer is here. For me and many other college students, that means transitioning our lifestyles from âcollege kidâ to âintern.â
Having just finished my junior year at Indiana University, the stress of final exams is still fresh in my mind. Iâm an advocate of flashcards and all-nighters before the exam, so moving into a full-time internship is an adjustment. Itâs strange (but great) that when I get home at the end of the day, I donât have to crack open a textbook.
A recent study by the New York Federal Reserve, however, makes me reevaluate some of those all-nighters, and makes me even more grateful for my internship experience thus far. Three economics professors from University of Wisconsin La Crosse, University of Pennsylvania and Auburn, respectively, sent out more than 5,000 fake resumes for online jobs to see what employers were really looking for when hiring graduates.

Internships, at their best, function as a two-way street. In exchange for an employer providing a student with real-world working experience, the intern brings new energy, increased productivity, diverse knowledge and perspective, and much more.
We hear constantly from employers that they couldnât keep up their level of productivity and quality of work without the help of interns. We have countless anecdotes of interns who went above and beyond, who saved the company money, who developed more efficient processes, who completed an important project that far surpassed expectations âŠ

An internship to explore âPlan Bâ
This is a guest blog by Jenette Seal, a student at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). She is finishing a major in Pre-Veterinary/Pre-Professional major. This past semester, she was an intern for SMWCâs undergraduate genetics class.
My internship was not a typical experience.
Many people take an internship to get a better idea of the career field they are interested in and gain firsthand knowledge doing the daily tasks associated with a given job. This was not my motivation, however.
My career goal is to attend veterinary school and either practice medicine or conduct research, both sides of veterinary medicine with which I am already familiar and experienced. My back-up plan, however, was to enroll in a graduate program for genetics if vet school didnât pan out. I have an interest in genetics and decided if Plan A (vet school) didnât work, I would pursue Plan B, being a geneticist.
