Hello everyone, my name is Dei’Marlon Scisney, but most people know me as “D.” I am from Evansville, Indiana and I am a rising junior from Wabash College. I am currently working towards a Biology major with English, Spanish, and Chemistry minors.

This will allow me to attend medical school after graduation, but life and experience could always steer me in a different direction. With this being my first professional job, I have never had to experience the struggle that is the nine to five routine. It was an extremely hard task for the first couple of days. It took time getting used to waking up early and working all day. My past retail jobs offered me a few experiences of working an all-day shift, but it was never very consistent. I wanted to share some tips that I have come across when it comes to getting used to working a full day for the first time.

Even though it might be the summer right now, going to bed early is the biggest piece of advice I can give. Instead of staying up all night watching Netflix, putting your phone down earlier can help. In June, interns from around the state attended Indiana INTERNnet’s first engagement event of the summer. Interns came together at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to network, explore, engage in a personal development seminar, and hear from a panel of past and present Children’s Museum interns.

Panelists shared their stories, while attendees asked questions regarding career paths and entering the workforce.

The future
One of my biggest takeaways was that it’s okay to not know what you want to do. Taking everything one day at a time was a large focal point that the panelists hit on. They all spoke of their past experiences and how they got to where they are today.

When I got offered the job here at Indiana INTERNnet, I was a freshman in college. At that time, I had no idea what being an intern really meant or what I was getting myself into. As I’m finishing up my third week on the job, I have come across some helpful hints for starting your first internship and what to expect.

Indiana INTERNnet is hosting its first online internship fair through CareerEco on March 28! This is the prefect opportunity for employers to connect with students and hopefully fill their upcoming summer internships. And unlike a traditional face-to-face career fair, an online internship fair provides employers and students with much more convenience. Want to participate? Here’s the important details:

What times does the fair take place?

The online internship fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST. However, your company doesn’t have to attend the entire time. Employers can indicate a specific timeframe that they’ll be available. Students can see all the registered employers’ availability so they can determine when they’d like to attend the fair to meet with their top prospects.

Hello, I’m Favian and I am proud to be part of the Indiana INTERNnet’s team as the 2019 spring intern. I am currently a senior at IUPUI Kelley School of Business where I am finishing up my bachelor’s in marketing and I will be graduating this May!

I used to live in North Carolina, but my parents decided to move to Indiana when I was 3 years old, and I have spent most of my life here. I was never a fan of being overdressed, but it was a problem I consistently encountered growing up. I remember when I was in elementary school, my mother would never let me pick my own clothes for special occasions. While my peers were wearing jeans and t-shirts, I was dressed to the nines, fully coordinated and accessorized. I hated the feeling of sticking out, and I remember being embarrassed. But looking back from where I am now, I’m grateful. When I see pictures from family gatherings and school events, I always look well put-together. It makes the memories nicer, and easier to look at. I didn’t think dressing up mattered at the time, but now I understand.

In fact, if you scroll down this page and look at our live numbers, you can see that summer internships are quickly getting posted to IndianaINTERN.net. Feeling a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out)? Think you need an intern? You may want to pump the brakes before posting.

I’m all about increasing the number of available internships for students. With the addition of interns, employers can accomplish additional tasks, introduce fresh perspectives and help train/mentor the future workforce. At the same time, students can increase their skills outside of the classroom, network and explore career interests. It’s a win-win!

There’s a danger, however, in poorly-executed internships: Already understaffed employers hire interns and can’t provide them with training or feedback. They don’t put much thought into tasks and projects their intern will be accomplishing. Or …

Hi! I’m Alexandra (“Alex”) Forsythe. I’ve been fortunate to have worked as an intern for NASA, Raytheon, and Ultra Electronics USSI. I designed a mission critical circuit board for NASA that will be used in an upcoming launch. For Raytheon, I programmed artificial neural networks. I’m a year-round intern for Ultra Electronics USSI, where I have been placed in charge of a new innovative product, and I’ll be an FPGA/ASIC design engineering intern for Intel next summer. Lots of employers take on interns.  Plenty of professionals will tell you the importance of a structured intern program. But sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the handling of day to day tasks. For most interns, this role is their first experience of the “real world” of their desired career path. It can be overwhelming, stressful, and completely new. This makes it crucial to recognize your interns when they do great work.

Whether positive or negative, feedback is necessary.

One of the signs of a successful internship program is constant feedback. There should be some type of schedule laid out for performance reviews or self-evaluation, and outlining tasks and goals. Of course, sometimes there is a need for constructive criticism. But don’t let that be all your intern hears from you! Positive reinforcement, while it seems trivial, goes a long way. Now that we’re entering midterm season (I know, sorry for bringing it up), plenty of students sleep less as the amount of schoolwork increases. If you’re not in school and working, it’s easy to feel like you’re not getting enough rest in today’s hectic world. Regardless of your situation, sometimes you just don’t get enough sleep.

How does sleep really impact your work?

One study found that lack of sleep is directly related to poor levels of function at work, but many likely find that an obvious conclusion. However, it gets worse. Another study found that while sleep deprivation doesn’t necessarily impact rule-based cognition (think mostly mindless tasks, like standardized tests), it negatively affects your innovative thinking, strategic planning, and risk analysis.

Now that we’re in October, it’s the halfway point for most fall internships. It’s also the middle of the fall semester for college students. As midterms are used to check student’s knowledge at the halfway point during a semester, a simple mid-internship review can be used to check in on the intern’s experience.

Here are some questions internship supervisors can ask their intern to see how they’re doing:

If the intern is working on a long-term project or projects for your organization, now is the time to check on them to see if they have any questions. What Does an Internship Entail?

Before you get started, you need to clear any assumptions or misconceptions you have about interns. It might seem like an attractive idea, but an intern’s purpose isn’t to be your personal coffee delivery service, run your errands or be a cheap/free substitute for a full-time employee.

If you’re assigning interns tasks that are on the same responsibility level as a full-time employee, they’re probably going to feel overwhelmed or exploited. There’s also nothing wrong with assigning somewhat menial tasks, but if their entire experience is filing and making copies, you’re missing the point!
