High School Internships: Archit Malik
Donât underestimate the value of high school internships. Weâre shining a light on these valuable experiences by telling the stories of students around the state. Be on the lookout for additional blog posts about high school internships.
For many students, the summer between high school and college feels like a time of waiting and anticipation, but for Archit Malik, itâs a time of doing and learning. Heâs working as a legal intern at The Garrett Companies this summer, where heâs gaining experience in real estate development before starting his freshman year at IUPUI next month.
Born in India, Archit moved to the United States when he was five years old and has lived in five different cities around the nation since then. Perhaps this resilience is what helped give him the confidence to jump into an opportunity at The Garrett Companies this year. He was connected to the company through its …
Virtual Internships: Challenge Accepted
Itâs the unofficial summer of virtual internships â weâre celebrating the successes and sharing the struggles that come with it. Be on the lookout for a blog post about virtual internships every Friday!
Author Bio: I am a rising senior at IUPUI. I am majoring in Finance and International Studies and minoring in Economics and Philanthropic Studies. I am currently a project manager and business analyst for the TechPoint S.O.S. (Summer Opportunities for Students) Challenge, where I am working with a team to develop a website to help parents and students with elementary education. Â
My summer, like many studentsâ around the nation, has not worked out as I expected. For several months I excitedly planned to intern with a corporate funds service in Indianapolis as a loan agent, but everything changed when the pandemic hit. I scrambled to find new opportunities and felt the pressure of needing to build …
Meet the Intern: Emily Combs
Greetings!
Iâm Emily, the Outreach Intern here at Indiana INTERNnet this summer. I feel grateful and excited for the opportunity to spend the next several months promoting experiential learning in my home state!
Iâm originally from Fort Wayne, where I attended Homestead High School and had my first internship experiences as a senior there. I really appreciate the freedom I had to gain professional experience before college, and thatâs a major part of why Iâm so excited about joining the Indiana INTERNnet team now. This is my fifth formal internship, so I guess you could say itâs a passion! Last summer I was a part-time intern at an Indianapolis nonprofit called Tangram and at Prudentialâs Indiana Financial Group. My time in both companies taught me how to apply what I had been learning in the classroom to actual projects and problems.
Iâm a rising senior at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, …

I am sad that there will not be a commencement ceremony to celebrate the accomplishment with my fellow classmates, but …
Intern Spotlight: Laura Knight
Hello, my name is Laura Knight. I am a senior at Indiana University, majoring in Policy Studies with a focus in Criminal Justice. I previously majored in Social Work at Ivy Tech Community College before transferring to IUPUI. My current major will allow me to pursue policy advocacy and research, while keeping the door open to graduate school or law school.
Before Ivy Tech & IUPUI, I attended high school in Wapakoneta, Ohio. This is a small town nestled in northwestern Ohio, where Drive Your Tractor to School Day was a regular, yearly event. During this time in my life I was involved in French club, Spanish club, cross country and track, and a rabbit breeder with 4-H. After high school I attended Ohio Dominican University for a short while, quickly recognizing collegiate studies was not a focus for me in 2008.
As a non-traditional student, Iâve …

Meet The Intern: Favian Aveja
Hello, Iâm Favian and I am proud to be part of the Indiana INTERNnetâs team as the 2019 spring intern. I am currently a senior at IUPUI Kelley School of Business where I am finishing up my bachelorâs in marketing and I will be graduating this May!
I used to live in North Carolina, but my parents decided to move to Indiana when I was 3 years old, and I have spent most of my life here. Growing up I played several sports such as basketball, baseball and football to keep me out of trouble. A few fun facts about me are: I really like to play Fortnite in my spare time; I like shoes; and I like Supreme merchandise a lot.
I am also currently the content marketing intern for the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at IUPUI. I help the IAC with their marketing tactics and …
Meet the Intern: Marissa Smith
Hello, my name is Marissa and I am excited to be Indiana INTERNnetâs intern for the summer of 2018. I have just wrapped up my junior year at IUPUI, where I study journalism, public relations and advertising.
Prior to relocating to Indianapolis for college, I attended high school near my hometown of Losantville, Ind. Though Indy is a relatively small city, it is huge compared to Losantville, which has a population of less than 300 people! I definitely prefer city living and plan to move somewhere even larger later on in my career.
My previous positions have all been communications or event management related, taking place at locally-based organizations such as the Indiana State Museum, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis, and Indiana Futsal. In addition to my new position here, I am also currently interning with HWC Engineering as part of the firmâs pilot program creating public relations plans for …

How the IMPACT Awards Indirectly âImpactedâ Me
In addition to having started my campus job just over a year ago, it has also been roughly a year since I began my internship with locally-based nonprofit Indiana Futsal! What originally began as temporary internship for a sport Iâd never heard of before (Oops) has flourished into a yearlong position Iâm highly grateful for.
Today I attended the Indiana INTERNnet IMPACT Awards …
Interning to Support the Warfighter
Katie Pfeiffer is studying Electrical Engineering at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and is expecting to graduate in May 2020. She is an intern for the Spectrum Technology Advanced Research Branch at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane Division. Her responsibilities include researching, creating diagrams and user manuals, applying technical skills and coding.
My internship at Crane was one of the best experiences in my entire life â not kidding! Crane is located in the middle of nowhere, but never have I met a community of people that are so kind and hospitable. This creates a positive and inviting work environment that allowed me to be excited to go into work every single day. The people in my group were also willing to challenge me and push me to learn more, work harder, and grow to become a better engineering student.
I worked on a multitude of projects while I …

When the Student Becomes the Teacher
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.
When I was 16 years old, I hated public speaking. I wouldnât speak at church, I wouldnât stand up and delegate at Girl Scout events, and I would even get nervous when I spoke to groups of 4 or 5 people at a time. As you can imagine, I was mortified when I saw that I had to take a public speaking class in order to graduate from practically any university. So, I tried to take the class in the best way possible, at Ivy Tech Community College in a small class with less people to see my face turn bright red the minute my mouth opened. It ended up being a group of 15(ish) students and it wasnât as difficult as I thought it would be. If I …
The Reality of the Post-Graduation Job Search
When I first graduated from IUPUI, I thought finding a job would be a breeze. I graduated with high distinction, completed two internships and held a part-time customer service job through college. In class, I was told that the public relations industry was growing rapidly. I thought I would walk across the stage at commencement with a diploma in one hand and a new career on the horizon.
Well, life doesnât always work out perfectly because the next thing I knew it was September, and I was still unemployed.
Just when I was feeling discouraged, my luck had turned around. First, Karissa Bash, Programs Assistant for Indiana INTERNnet, asked if I would write a guest blog post. I had multiple classes with Karissa at IUPUI, so I was happy to help her out.
After she heard I was still looking for a full-time position, she recommended that I apply to …
