Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on February 18 at the 14th Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

I am Destiny Wardwell, a senior in the Kelley School of Business at Indianapolis. I will be graduating in May 2019 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree with concentrations in Management and Human Resource Management. I currently intern with Motionwear, but I have previously interned with Quality Connection of Central Indiana and Stopover, Inc. Courtney McDonald is currently a Senior at IUPUI and will be graduating May 2019 with a bachelor’s in social work. Courtney is currently interning at Meridian Health Services- Rushville Location and is a Behavioral Clinician (BC).

Courtney McDonald:  I’m going to graduate this May with a bachelor’s degree in social work and a certification in child abuse and neglect. I really didn’t plan to go to school for social work. Marissa Smith is a junior at IUPUI studying journalism and public relations. She serves as the communications intern for local nonprofit Indiana Futsal, writing articles, managing social media content, and assisting with the coordination of the organization’s many events.

How the IMPACT Awards Indirectly ‘Impacted’ Me
In addition to having started my campus job just over a year ago, it has also been roughly a year since I began my internship with locally-based nonprofit Indiana Futsal! What originally began as temporary internship for a sport I’d never heard of before (Oops) has flourished into a yearlong position I’m highly grateful for.

How much sleep do I really need tonight?

I can’t wait for summer break…

Which classes do I need to take in the fall?

Should I change my major?

I need four hours of sleep to function.

Wait… what am I going to do over the summer? Classes? Internship? Work in *shudders* retail?

If you’ve thought any or all of these things in the past few weeks, you’re probably in the same situation as I am. My hope is that by the time you finish reading this, you’ll be a bit calmer and less frantic about the future.

I had the opportunity to attend Indiana INTERNnet’s IMPACT Awards this past week. It was a little crazy, because I was the only person in the room that I knew. Nonetheless I jumped right in, headfirst. I went to my assigned seat and starting talking to the people at my table.

The IMPACT Awards are given to employers, career development professionals, and interns who have gone above and beyond their call of duty. For employers, an IMPACT Award means that you’ve developed a good program that focuses on teaching interns valuable skills for their future in the workplace. During my sophomore year at IUPUI, I had fully intended to do homework and get through classes. In a fall business communications class, I was working on a group project with a couple of classmates when one of them, Jimmy, asked if I was going to the Indiana Means Business Career Fair. Until that point, I had had no intention of going, but I decided to go because… well, why not? I could gain experience from attending, and didn’t have anything to lose.
