Indiana INTERNnet: What are some of the projects you did for the Office of Student Employment?
Sarah Post: I came up with content such as pictures, videos, etc. and posted daily on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. I did this mainly to draw attention to our office and get more students to realize there is an office on campus that will help them find part-time work while they’re in college, and also to advertise all the free services that are available to students, such as resume/cover letter building, job searching, mock interviewing, etc. I really loved …

Emily Atkinson is a senior at IUPUI, graduating this May. She plans to continue her education and earn a Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology.
Indiana INTERNnet: In what fields of science are you specializing? What made you interested in pursuing those?
Emily Atkinson: Iâm currently majoring in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. I love learning about how the human body works and different rehabilitation exercises that help make the body healthy after injury. Specifically, I am interested in the skeletal system and aging-induced bone fragility. I currently work at Indiana University School of Medicine in the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department in a research lab that studies osteoporosis and factors contributing to …

Ashley Griffith is a graduate student in the Master of Health Administration program at Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health. After graduation in 2017, she hopes to land a fellowship position in a not-for-profit health system.

Ashley Griffith: I wanted to see how a health system ran from a system-wide perspective. The human resources department is responsible for hiring and maintaining all the leaders and staff for the system, along with countless other duties. Ryan Palmore graduated from IUPUI in August with a BA in philosophy. After completing a summer internship with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), he was hired by the organization as a Student Support Specialist. After several months, he was promoted to Assistant Director â Student Support Services.
Indiana INTERNnet: What did you enjoy about working in a state agency?
Ryan Palmore: Being able to experience firsthand how various public entities operate internally and across institutions–public and private–has greatly increased my awareness of and appreciation for the hard work that goes into seeing that Indiana residents’ needs and wishes are valued.

Nicole Quint: When I went to Panama last August, I was able to see how challenging and rewarding the profession of dentistry can be. Not only did I recognize the joy in the eyes of community members after they had their painful teeth removed, but I was able to see the strong impact a dentist has on the community. Casey Bauchle: I specialize in cognitive psychology, specifically how people perceive information and how they react to/store it. I chose this field because I have always had a natural tendency to ponder how people think and how they choose to respond in certain situations.

Can you believe Thanksgiving has come and gone?
It seems like I interviewed for my internship with Milliner & Associates (M&A) just a few weeks ago; the time has passed quickly for me.
As the Fall season winds down, this is a great opportunity to contemplate all the things for which we can be thankful.
Here at M&A, we started celebrating Thanksgiving a week before the holiday. On November 19, our team had a pitch in, where everyone shared their homemade goods to show appreciation for each other. In order for our associates to spend a little extra time with family and enjoy the holiday, our office worked a half day on Nov. 25 and was closed the rest of the week. What a great opportunity for a family get-together!

My family moved to the United States 10 years ago when I was only 13 years old. Â At the time, I already knew that going to college would be a given for me. When Shawna McLetchie began a grant-funded internship with the School of Medicine at IUPUI in 2012, she had minimal lab experience.
Now, she can âwowâ you with all that sheâs picked up.
âMy time in Dr. [Janice] Blumâs lab has allowed me to learn techniques like ELISIA, Western Blot and qPCR,â she said. âI have also been able to communicate in science by the writing I am starting to do as well as presenting my research project in lab meetings or even just talking to Dr. Blum about my data.â

While working at a University, I have the opportunity to learn from both students and staff. Since many on-campus staff are also student employers, I hear about a variety of things that occur in the workplace. Because a part-time job or internship can often be the gateway to full-time employment, it is important that a student employee be aware of the way he or she behaves in the workplace.Â
