When the Student Becomes the Teacher

When I was 16 years old, I hated public speaking. I wouldn’t speak at church, I wouldn’t stand up and delegate at Girl Scout events, and I would even get nervous when I spoke to groups of 4 or 5 people at a time. As you can imagine, I was mortified when I saw that I had to take a public speaking class in order to graduate from practically any university. So, I tried to take the class in the best way possible, at Ivy Tech Community College in a small class with less people to see my face turn bright red the minute my mouth opened. Tales from the Young Intern

Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend “Forward: Tales from the Young CEO”, an Indy Chamber event. This was my first professional event, besides a career fair, so I had almost no expectations going in. My green “first-timer” ribbon proudly displayed, I fumbled around nervously for the first 20 minutes of the networking portion of the event. I was at the mercy of my mentor, Nicole Bieker, as she introduced me to all the people she knew at the event.

After what seemed like an endless number of handshakes and conversations, finally the program started. The keynote speaker was Max Yoder, co-founder and CEO of Lesson.ly, an organization that produces learning software for companies. Being a CEO, I expected Max to be an old executive in a …

Congrats to Interns, Employers and Career Development Professionals!

I had the opportunity to attend Indiana INTERNnet’s IMPACT Awards this past week. It was a little crazy, because I was the only person in the room that I knew. Nonetheless I jumped right in, headfirst. I went to my assigned seat and starting talking to the people at my table.

The IMPACT Awards are given to employers, career development professionals, and interns who have gone above and beyond their call of duty. For employers, an IMPACT Award means that you’ve developed a good program that focuses on teaching interns valuable skills for their future in the workplace. For interns, an IMPACT Award means you went above and beyond the expectations that were set in front of you through your internship. As a career development professional, an IMPACT …

Learning While Teaching

Johnny Slivka is an HR/Business Development Intern with Milliner & Associates. He will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business this year.

Going into my summer internship, I believed this summer would be full of learning, strictly learning. What I soon discovered was far from only learning, I was teaching. Immediately, I was introduced to Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), and started learning and teaching. JAG, a program that before this summer meant nothing to me, has now ingrained itself in me. It has also really been an eye-opening experience.

Before I dive into why this program is so important to me, I want to describe it in a little more detail. JAG is a state-based, national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing dropouts among young people who are most at risk. JAG’s mission is to keep young people in school through graduation and provide work-based learning experiences …

Interview training opens doors

This is a guest blog by Alecia Kissel, HR and recruiting intern at Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis. 

My third and final semester as an intern at Milliner & Associates has been a whirlwind.

The first two weeks I spent shadowing interviews with the Recruiting Manager and Recruiting Specialist to get a firmer grasp on the language we use and expectations we set in that short thirty minutes. Three weeks ago, I conducted my first interview. It was nerve wracking, don’t get me wrong, but now I thoroughly enjoy interviewing and all that comes with it.

I am not sure if I was nervous because of the person sitting across from me or the person shadowing me. Having colleagues and my boss shadow my interviews in the first couple of weeks added some extra pressure. However, I knew I needed to hear their feedback. They’re professionals, been there done …

Ready or not, it’s time to apply for spring internships!

This is a guest blog by Alecia Kissel, HR/Recruiting intern at Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.

I was just getting settled into my fall schedule, yet I already need to prepare for a new semester all over again – my last semester!

Nostalgia can move to the backburner for now.

On my mind are questions like, “What do I want to do?” “Where do I apply?” “What if I end up at the wrong company?” Valid questions, all worth discussing, but who do I talk to?

I’m lucky to have more than one mentor I truly trust. Regarding my job search though, I immediately go to my boss, Nicole. For other people, this may be a slippery slope talking to an employer about other employment opportunities, depending on the relationship. Thankfully, my boss is one of my most trusted mentors.
