In-class to In-tern

Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.

During my sophomore year at IUPUI, I had fully intended to do homework and get through classes. In a fall business communications class, I was working on a group project with a couple of classmates when one of them, Jimmy, asked if I was going to the Indiana Means Business Career Fair. Until that point, I had had no intention of going, but I decided to go because
well, why not? I could gain experience from attending, and didn’t have anything to lose.

I walked up to a table for a company, Milliner and Associates, which I had never heard of and knew nothing about, except that they had internships. I managed to get out my elevator pitch without stumbling and Madison, the company’s representative, looked at my …

EARN Indiana, Earn Mutual Benefits for Employers and Students

Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) are continuing to advocate the importance of internships through the Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program.

EARN Indiana is a mutually-beneficial program for employers and students. Eligible students benefit from a wide variety of positions offering competitive pay and valuable experience. These internships can be used to explore career interests, develop transferable skills, apply academic coursework to the professional world, examine career interests and earn college credit.

Employers with an approved internship can be reimbursed for up to 50% of an eligible intern’s wages. Interns can bring a fresh take to the organization and assist with backburner projects. There is also the opportunity for talent acquisition (promoting to full-time positions) and recruitment of other students.

“We have been very impressed with the (EARN Indiana) program, the interns we connect with and the skills they bring to our department,” …

Growing as an HR Professional

Johnny Slivka is an HR/Business Development Intern with Milliner & Associates. He will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business this year.

On August 31st, Milliner & Associates gave me the opportunity to grow as a human resources (HR) professional by attending the HR Indiana Annual Conference. Wow, I was blown away by just the one day I was there. On that day I attended with two other co-workers who were able to guide me through the conference, as well as help lead me to the sessions that would be most beneficial. As an intern, I would have never imagined that I would be able to learn and grow as a professional by being able to attend the largest HR conference in the Midwest and one of the largest in the nation!

My first session I was able to attend was about emotional intelligence and it …

From Yard to Office

Johnny Slivka is an HR/Business Development Intern with Milliner & Associates. He will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business this year.

Following my senior year in high school, as some may say, I entered the real world. The first Saturday of the summer is where it all started.

My first day of work – not sports, not school – but real work. On this day instead of strapping up my cleats or tying my shoe laces, I was lacing up my boots and was ready to get after it. I was working as part of an installation crew planting trees. Some may not understand the process of planting a tree, but it’s very hard work. From digging the hole to moving the tree to cleaning up, it is all physically demanding.

Fast forward four years later and every day I can I’m lacing up my boots …

Mentor Guides, Encourages Intern

Madison Foster is a senior at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. She is currently a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.

Having a mentor is a pretty powerful thing.

It’s more than just having someone give you advice. A true mentor not only gives advice, but supports, guides, teaches you, etc. I’ve never really had a mentor before I started here at Milliner & Associates, but I definitely think everyone should have one through college and beyond.

Refrain
Reframe
Receive

Diane Harrison is a senior at IUPUI Kelley School of Business. She is a Recruiting & HR/Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates.

Have you ever felt like life happens so fast and that you never really have time to do the things you want? Maybe you feel like life is passing you by.

Do you feel like other people get all the “lucky breaks”? If you were presented with some of the same opportunities, you could achieve some of the same successes too. Well, just stop that! Change your perspective and look around you.

What does opportunity really mean? According to the Oxford Dictionary, opportunity is defined as “a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.” Because you decided to further your education and enroll in college, this presents you with many opportunities that can help shape you as a person and your future endeavors. Did …

‘Soak Up Everything You Can’

Madison Foster is a senior at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI. She is currently a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.

How many times in your college career have you heard the words, “You need to do an internship”?

I can’t even begin to count the amount of times I heard that phrase. Most of the time I would shrug them off. I work full-time and go to school, I can’t just quit and jump into a temporary job that may or may not pay.

However, as I approached my senior year at the Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis, I finally started to look into internships. My decision was solidified when I spoke to my advisor, who told me it is difficult to get into the HR field with no HR-related experience. So I searched and searched for the perfect internship and …

Intern lets her personality shine

Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, a staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.

In October, I attended the Indiana Means Business Career Fair. It seemed like a normal career fair with students, alumni and employers. It was a unique experience for me, though.

I had the pleasure of attending as an employer and as a student. I got to see how it operated on both ends of the spectrum. I must say, it was extremely interesting and I learned a lot.

I have been to a career fair before, solely as a student. I have been the nervous college kid walking up to an employer, not quite knowing what to say or how to act.

This time, I got to be the employer that nervous college kids approach. I was nervous at first myself, but I was passionate about …

Intern has many reasons to be thankful

Firdas Abamislimova is a senior at IUPUI’s Kelley School of Business. She is studying Management, HR and International Studies.

Can you believe Thanksgiving has come and gone?

It seems like I interviewed for my internship with Milliner & Associates (M&A) just a few weeks ago; the time has passed quickly for me.

As the Fall season winds down, this is a great opportunity to contemplate all the things for which we can be thankful.

Here at M&A, we started celebrating Thanksgiving a week before the holiday. On November 19, our team had a pitch in, where everyone shared their homemade goods to show appreciation for each other. In order for our associates to spend a little extra time with family and enjoy the holiday, our office worked a half day on Nov. 25 and was closed the rest of the week. What a great opportunity for a family get-together!

Internship allows student to experience ‘gray area’

Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, a staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.

What thoughts come to mind when you think about the word “internship”?

Are they positive, negative or somewhere in between? I never really had an opinion about them. My professors kept saying how important they were, but I just couldn’t see the value at the time. Now, I’m disappointed I waited until my senior year to even start applying for an internship, but there’s no point in regretting the past. I can only change the future.

I started applying for internships knowing that they were extremely important and that I needed one to put on my rĂ©sumĂ©. I knew I would gain experience and knowledge, but I had no idea to what extent. My time here at Milliner & Associates is unlike anything I could have imagined. …

First generation college student trailblazing career path

Firdas Abamislimova is a senior at IUPUI’s Kelley School of Business. She is studying Management, HR and International Studies.

My name is Firdas, and I am the first member of my family to go to college!

My family moved to the United States 10 years ago when I was only 13 years old.  At the time, I already knew that going to college would be a given for me. My parents gave up all their life savings and their loved ones in order to move to the land of opportunities. You see, my parents never had the opportunity to go to college, so they have always dreamed about being able to give the opportunity to their children. Where I am from, going to college was a dream that came true only for the wealthy. Finding a job upon graduation was for those of true Russian ethnicity. Why, you may …

Despite heavy course load, internship is worth it

Ashley Hager is a fall intern with Milliner & Associates, a staffing and recruiting agency for accounting, finance, HR and administrative employment positions.

Stress. Overload. Pressure. Worry.

These are a few words that come to mind when I think about working 20 hours a week and taking 18 credit hours this semester.

You know what, though?

Experience. Mentor. Learning. Opportunity. Thankful.

These are a few words that come to mind when I think about my internship.

Still to this day, an entire month after my first day, I am shocked that I get to work at Milliner & Associates for a whole semester. This is an amazing opportunity.

I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and get home at 9:30 p.m. from my evening classes. I have never had problems with time management before. I’ve also never really had a full schedule like this before either. It is hard finding time …

Mock interviews mirror real-life nerves

This is a guest blog by Alecia Kissel, HR/recruiting intern at Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis.

During the holidays, Milliner & Associates went to Decatur Central High School to mock interview their students involved in the JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) program.

JAG helps students with their job search, resume building, interview skills and networking. This week we are going back to provide face-to-face feedback on how we thought the interviews went and to allow for the students to ask us direct questions about the process.

Mock interviewing the students was the first time that I was on the other side of the interview desk. It was my turn to ask the questions. As I prepare to interview candidates coming into the office this week all on my own, I will keep the high schoolers’ interviews in mind.

I was in the students’ seats a little less than …

Internship offers insight into recruiting world

This is a guest blog by Macy Gentry, intern at Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis. Gentry is a senior at Marian University.

I have had a great experience thus far at M&A, and I have learned so much in a short amount of time. This internship has opened my eyes to what recruiting is. I have read about recruiting in my text books, listened to a number of lectures in class and even have recruited a little myself, but I have never been in a true recruiting environment.

Looking back to just a few weeks ago, my whole understanding of recruiting has changed. I saw recruiting firms as the people that call and just ask if you need assistance filling positions, but I was wrong. Recruiting is so much more in depth and a lot more complicated and competitive than I could have imagined.

Just having a …

Summer internship leads to fall opportunity

This is a guest blog by Nicole Bieker, Vice President of Operations at Milliner & Associates, LLC in Indianapolis. Milliner & Associates recently hired Alecia Kissel, former summer intern, to continue her duties into the fall.

Please join us in welcoming Alecia Kissel back as our HR/Recruiting Intern for the fall semester. Alecia joined us in May as our summer intern, and she did such an amazing job that we invited her to return for another semester. We are so proud of her and the significant contribution that she has made to our team in a very short period of time.
