Thankful Intern Shares Grateful Moments
The below freezing temperatures hint at the brewing winter and signal a string of holiday celebrations. Every November, Thanksgiving is celebrated in Indiana with only the juiciest of roasted turkeys and the sweetest of pumpkin pies. As family and friends gather around the table, a sense of gratefulness fills the air almost competing with the blend of nutmeg and cinnamon. I find myself reflecting on the internship opportunity I have enjoyed with Indiana INTERNnet.
Grateful for the chance to gain work experience: Graduating with my MBA right after college, I had no experience in marketing. For the past 6+ months, I have learned how to manage social media accounts, design print and web materials, analyze website metrics and write content. My marketing internship has not only expanded my skill set but also provided me with relevant work experience.
Grateful to be building my portfolio with skills-focused projects: …
Breakfast with Twitter, YouTube and NPR
Would you believe when I started my internship, I had never used Twitter before? Four months and thousands of tweets later, social media is one of my main responsibilities with Indiana INTERNnet. Learning by doing is a wonderful thing.
At the Millennial Impact conference in Indianapolis (#MCON13) on July 18th, I sat at breakfast with none other than Jenna Golden, a leader in Twitterâs Washington, D.C. office, along with Jessica Mason (YouTube) and Danielle Deabler (NPR). I would have never imagined I would dive into social media so deep, so fast.
Throughout the entire conference, speaker after speaker emphasized the importance of allowing Millennials input and control on projects specific to social involvement and movement. This definitely resonates with my experience at Indiana INTERNnet.
Donât worry. I took away some valuable tips from this conference other than choosing the right table at breakfast:

Five Minutes of Pinterest a Day
Every day, I settle into my cubicle space: my keyboard and mouse at a comfortable distance, my cup of water within reach, and a bag of almonds to satisfy the occasional craving. Within these quasi-walls, I find myself hungry for an external infusion of creativity to lift my thoughts to the extraordinary. This is where Pinterest comes into play.
“…I find myself hungry for an external infusion of creativity to lift my thoughts to the extraordinary.”
If you are unfamiliar with Pinterest, this social media site offers a virtual cork board of sorts where you can browse, pin, and later review items of interest. This act of pinning usually ends up making me hungry, wanting to exercise, and working on a craft project. None of the ideas turn out as good as they look on Pinterest. The recipes I attempt to replicate do not look as pretty. The fitness …
The Life and Times of an Internet Marketing Intern
The Life and Times of an Internet Marketing Intern is a guest blog post by Rachel Brown, the Content Marketing Intern at digitalrelevance. In this position, she produces valuable advanced content and contributes to the company blog. Brown expects to graduate from Butler University in 2015 with degrees in English Literature and French. This is her reflection on her rewarding internship experience with digitalrelevance.
An English literature and French major at a liberal arts university. Does that sound like someone who would throw herself into the world of Internet marketing? I thought that girl would be out of place and struggle to find her way in.
My time at Slingshot SEO and digitalrelevance proved to be quite the opposite. Right from the start, I had confidence instilled in me from my supervisors, and I was put right to work. As an intern in the editorial department, my fellow Search …
Mind The Employment Gap
From âwhat are you going to do when you grow upâ to âwhat are you going to do after graduationâ to even âwhatâs next for you,â life seems to be one never ending string of career questions. These questions assume that one is continually equipping oneâs self with the tools needed to proceed onto the next career milestone. Up until my graduation from college in May 2011, I thought I was ready to take on âthe real worldâ â to do whatever I was going to do when I grew up. However, like many of my generation, I faced a reality that I was not expecting: the student employment gap.
A labor shortage is a stark realization as the Baby Boomer workforce retires, heating up the competition for emerging talent. However, a striking contrast exists bewteen what employers require and what college students bring to the table. As reported …
Finding an internship from a ‘tweet’
This is a guest post from Jenna Whalen, a student at the University of Indianapolis. She found her upcoming summer internship with DistinXion from a tweet posted by Indiana INTERNnet.
Last year I was extremely lucky with my internship search.
Sure, I had a few roadblocks, but my professor introduced me to the person who ended up being my boss for the summer. From there, it just took off with very little effort on my part.
This year, though, I wasnât quite as lucky.
I began my search in December and applied with 14 different places. I had a few interviews and a couple offers, but nothing seemed like a good fit. I was frustrated because I thought I had exhausted all avenues â Iâd been on numerous websites and had also communicated with several key people.
Just when I was reaching the height of my frustration, something unexpected happened. I was on …
Marketing internship provides applicable work experience
Megan Nelson is a student at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana. She is an employee at Lake Land College (LLC) in Mattoon, Illinois.
The goal of my internship was to use online marketing to increase the collegeâs non-traditional audience, expand its brand, and get noticed on the Internet. Part of my assignments involved using avenues like Google AdWords to reach this goal. I spent the majority of my first two weeks researching Google AdWords and how it worked before I determined the best way to learn was to “dive in head first” and create one. I generated three text ads on AdWords and conceptualized a single video ad to reach adult students from start to finish. I also explored the possibility of advertising on Pandora Radio by gathering demographic information and creating a survey via SurveyMonkey.com to help determine if that opportunity would be worth the investment.

Reconnecting With Your Internship Network
This guest post is from Jennifer Weinmann, Student Employment Consultant at IUPUI.
In recent weeks, I have been helping my sister (who will soon be graduating) implement strategies for her upcoming job search. In my recent conversations with her, networking has come up time and again. As many of us are aware, networking today most often consists of LinkedIn and other electronic sources of reaching out to individuals. Striking up a conversation with an old contact sometimes seems hard to do in an online environment.
That is the question I wanted to help answer:
How do I reach out to my internship network for help with my job search?
In my sisterâs final years of her undergraduate degree, she completed two internships and two immersive learning projects. All of which have left her with a great deal of knowledge and an excellent group of contacts in her LinkedIn profile. …
The Finale Factor: Reflections on my internship at Indiana INTERNnet
This week marks the end of my internship here with Indiana INTERNnet, and just by coincidence, it signifies a close to the Freddie Factor blog series. My goal with this blog series was to inform peers, employers, and educators about the opportunities that arise from interning. Â
Hopefully, youâve found this blog to be informative and gained a better understanding of why internships are beneficial. Iâve tried to give tips and tricks relating to interviews, resumes, and the latest-and-greatest Indiana INTERNnet website technology. The Freddie Factor or âFF,â as it is referred to in the âfactor fan circles,â was also helpful to meâŠyes, there are factor fans. I did quite a bit of research when writing these blogs and learned a great deal about interning, as a result. With this final blog, I thought Iâd recap my internship experience.
During my internship at Indiana INTERNnet, one of my assignments was …
Got a Minute? Reflect on your Internship!
As you wrap-up your internship, you may find that you have a few treasured weeks of summer left. What are going to do during this time? Maybe youâll vacation, eat pizza, catch up on the latest blockbusters, relax, or prepare your dorm room or apartment. While these are all great ideas, if you do have a few spare minutes, you should consider utilizing the time to work on documenting your professional experiences.
Here at the Freddie Factor, Iâm hoping for an upcoming school year packed with interviews for full-time employment. During those interviews, recruiters and other interviewers will want to hear about your internship, personal, and academic accomplishments. They also want to see and hear that youâve prepared for the interview by researching the company, the position, and tailoring your answers accordingly.
Now is the time to update your resumeâdemonstrating what you did during your internships and results that …

Costs, Benefits of Virtual Internships
Chances are, youâve heard about virtual internshipsâbut have any of you actually been a virtual intern? (Iâm guessing no, but if the answer is yes, please leave a comment below, and tell us about your experience!) Personally, I was never a virtual intern, but Iâve had friends with great virtual internship stories to share, so I thought Iâd do a little research and explain to you what Iâve learned.
Both The Wall Street Journal and USA Today recently covered the increasing popularity of virtual internshipsâspecifically opportunities with start-up companies, which are more likely to be found on the coasts and in Silicon Valley. The articles indicate, as a result of the struggling economy, the job market is extremely competitive. Therefore, completing internshipsâvirtual or in-personâis more important than ever. In addition, companies are trying to find ways to reduce their costs, so having a virtual intern is a win-win for both …
What is Branding, and Why Do I Need It?
Branding, branding, branding. Itâs a popular buzzword in the college, internship, and job worlds, but what exactly is it?
Yes, branding can refer to âItâs so easy a caveman can do itââ thank you, GEICO. The branding to which I am referring is personal branding. This type of branding has many different definitions, but simply put, it is the personal identity you wish to convey to schools and employers. Your âbrandâ can involve many aspects of your lifeâfrom your appearance, your knowledge, and your resume, to your online presence with Facebook and LinkedIn. All of these elements are visible to potential schools or employers, and knowing how to create and manage your personal brand is important to future success.
So, how do you create a brand and manage it? In creating a brand, you first need to identify your goals. If you are trying to snag a specific job, …

Networking for Introverts
Entry by Jennifer Weinmann, Student Employment Consultant for the IUPUI Office of Student Employment in Indianapolis, IN
As a Student Employment Consultant, one of the biggest issues I come across is students who are uncomfortable networking. Whether itâs a part-time position, internship, or full-time position, networking is increasingly the best way to make connections that could land you a position.
If youâre like me, you may not consider yourself an extrovertâŠand that could mean anxiety at the thought of attending a networking event. For those who shy away at the thought of meeting and greeting in a room of strangers, Iâd like to suggest a âbaby stepâ to a public gathering: LinkedIn.com
Many of you may know of the site. For those who are not familiar, the main objective of the site is to bring professionals together and provide an online environment for networking. …
