Extending Your Internship
This summer has flown by and before I knew it my supervisor was asking about evaluations and scheduling meeting times to wrap up my internship. I was already sad at the idea of leaving such an amazing work environment, but all good things come to an end, just maybe not as soon as I thought.
Staying as an intern allows for more opportunities to stay and gain more knowledge. I know a lot of people fall in love with their internship and hope for an extended stay. I came up with a list of things that I think will help you get noticed by coworkers and supervisor that shows youâre interested in staying longer.
Be willing to work
If you want to stay on at a location, then you obviously must like what you are doing. If you want to be asked to stay a for another interning period, then …
What I’ve Learned This Summer
This summer has been such an amazing experience at Indiana INTERNnet. I have been so incredibly lucky to work with such amazing people and learn so much along the way. Between seeing behind the scenes of event preparation and learning how to correctly navigate the workplace, this summer has been the best learning opportunity. While learning in the classroom is important, there are some things that canât be learned while listening to a lecture.
The Importance of Connections
Of course, meeting new people and expanding your circle of people is important. But it wasnât until I got an internship that I realized how important networking really is. You never know who can help you get ahead or if someone you know has the perfect job for you. It’s important that you continue to grow your connections and keep up with the relationships that you make.
Asking Questions Only Makes You …
Summer Engagement Event at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
This past week we held our second Intern Engagement Event of the summer. The event took place at Hilbert Circle Theater in Indianapolis. Before the interns heard the amazing music, they participated in some speed networking. The speed networking allowed for interns and employers to get to know each other in a unique and exciting environment.
After networking, the Indiana INTERNnet team gave out prizes to lucky raffle winners. The interns were then free to go get lunch and prepare for the performance. With a theme like Broadway, there were many happy faces in the audience.
Even after the performance interns met up again to have a Q&A session with some of the ISOâs event and venue staff members. The Q&A was full of amazing questions ranging from how licensing works in the music industry to how the ISO is changing their branding to meet a new desired market.

Students and Employers: Itâs not too Late for Summer Internships!
If youâre a student, youâve still got time to apply for summer internships on Indiana INTERNnet, and if youâre an employer, this is still a good opportunity to post your internship! Itâs better to start late than never.
Students
Itâs a common assumption that by this time, itâs too late to start searching for a summer internship. Itâs not! There are still over a thousand open internship positions on our site! Additionally, many employers procrastinate (just like students do). We still have employers posting summer internships every day.
But you do need to move quickly! Head to your schoolâs career services office and ask someone to look over your resume and make sure you impress employers. Brush up on your interview skills and gather any relevant work pieces from your classes that highlight your skills (like writing samples, design pieces, etc.).
Employers
Many students have final exams and projects to worry about …
Indiana INTERNnetâs Online Internship Fair
Indiana INTERNnet is hosting its first online internship fair through CareerEco on March 28! This is the prefect opportunity for employers to connect with students and hopefully fill their upcoming summer internships. And unlike a traditional face-to-face career fair, an online internship fair provides employers and students with much more convenience. Want to participate? Hereâs the important details:
What times does the fair take place?
The online internship fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST. However, your company doesnât have to attend the entire time. Employers can indicate a specific timeframe that theyâll be available. Students can see all the registered employersâ availability so they can determine when theyâd like to attend the fair to meet with their top prospects.
Whatâs makes this fair different from a traditional career/internship fair?
Zero travel is involved! Attend via your computer or laptop whenever is convenient to you. Employers wonât …
Is My Company Ready for an Intern?
Even though itâs only January, many companies are already starting to think about summer intern recruitment. In fact, if you scroll down this page and look at our live numbers, you can see that summer internships are quickly getting posted to IndianaINTERN.net. Feeling a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out)? Think you need an intern? You may want to pump the brakes before posting.
Iâm all about increasing the number of available internships for students. With the addition of interns, employers can accomplish additional tasks, introduce fresh perspectives and help train/mentor the future workforce. At the same time, students can increase their skills outside of the classroom, network and explore career interests. Itâs a win-win!
Thereâs a danger, however, in poorly-executed internships: Already understaffed employers hire interns and canât provide them with training or feedback. They donât put much thought into tasks and projects their intern will be accomplishing. Or …
The Transition from College to Career
As a recent college graduate from a Big 10 university, I know how stressful and exciting those last few months of campus life can be. Itâs a whirlwind of emotions.
In the middle of trying to take in all the sights and scenes before I left a place I called home for the last four years, I had to stop and consider what the next step was. Once I received my diploma, I was faced with the decision of whether to immediately start my career, attend grad school or take time to travel the world. But transitioning from a free-spirited undergrad to a professional with a bachelorâs degree was tougher than I thought!
My senior semester was dedicated to a lot of job applications and cover letters, but I didnât have a full-time job waiting for me once I left Bloomington. I learned quickly that I didnât have enough …

Make the Most of Spring Break
Spring breaks are this month for many high schools, colleges and universities. You may be planning to kick back and relax for a week, but hereâs a list of productive activities you could do instead.
1 . Catch up on homework
This may sound boring, but the end of the semester brings deadlines for projects youâve been putting off. You donât have to spend every day at the library studying for those final exams coming up in May. Use this time to catch up, so you donât fall behind later. Dedicate a few hours throughout the week to work on assignments.
2 . Get organized
Students have busy lives, which can leave little time for organization. Use this free time to clean out your backpack and organize your notes. If you have the momentum, clean and organize your room/apartment/house. Spring is almost here, you can get a head start …
Gear Up Now For Summer Internships
The temperature is dropping. The nights are getting longer. That means itâs time to start thinking about ⊠summer internships?
Thatâs right! Many students have begun searching for summer opportunities, and some employers have hired their summer interns already. Like holiday music in the mall, the process seems to start earlier each year.
If your employer utilizes www.IndianaINTERN.net, I encourage you to post your openings soon and begin searching for the perfect intern. Be thorough when describing the expectations and duties so you attract the right type of candidates for the position. Create an intern work plan and offer students as much real-world experience as possible. Remember, you are grooming the future workforce.
However, if your employer has encountered obstacles in creating an internship program, you are not alone. The Indiana Chamberâs 2015 Employer Survey revealed there is work to be done to address barriers to entry and facilitate partnerships …

Internships Gone Viral
Virtual internships. Theyâre the beeâs knees, the catâs pajamas, and the tigerâs spots. Virtual internships are not always considered by students or employers, but the obvious benefit is that it allows interns to work from anywhere. Interns who work remotely could be ideal for organizations that may not have the office space or personnel need for supervision.
Whatâs not to love? Some advantages of virtual internships include: flexibility, less limitations and more opportunities, and the chance to find a field which best suits you. If youâre a student interested in an internship, virtual gigs are perfect for someone with a part-time job, classes, or other obligations. Virtual internships give you flexibility to do your work when you wantâas long as you know how to manage your time and are self-motivated. These internships may even save you money. You donât have to dress up for work or use …
Do you âknow how 2 goâ to career success?
This is a guest post written by Sara Hess, Campaign Coordinator and Editor at Learn More Indiana
Career success means different things to different professionals. Whether your industry defines success as products sold, media markets reached or something else entirely, there are smart steps studentsâin high school or collegeâcan take to ensure success in their chosen field.
The KnowHow2GO Indiana 2012 campaign kicks off this summer with tips, step-by-step guides and goals for students of all ages to prepare them for college and career success. Thereâs even a fun contest to help you win $100 for college expenses!
Of course, one of the smartest things students can do to prepare for their future careers is to intern or job-shadow a professional. While interning will give you a deeper perspective on whether youâll enjoy a specific career path, job-shadowing for just a day or afternoon can also give you a glimpse …
