Virtual Internships: Museum Musings
Itâs the unofficial summer of virtual internships â weâre celebrating the successes and sharing the struggles that come with it. Be on the lookout for a blog post about virtual internships every Friday!
Brooke Hazel is a Digital Media Intern at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis this summer â rather, for The Childrenâs Museum, as Brooke is working at home like many interns in Indiana. Brooke is from Brownsburg and attends Butler University as a member of the class of 2022. With double majors in Strategic Communication and Human Communication & Organizational Leadership and double minors in Spanish and Education, Brooke already learned the value of time management before it became more important than ever this year.
She started her summer internship search early â and it paid off. Not only did she land an internship that aligns well with her career goals, but she also made it through the hiring …
Things to Do in Indiana This Fall
Itâs currently my favorite season and I know a lot of othersâ around the office. The air is crisp, closets are in need of an upgrade, and the leaves are changing. While a lot of these blogs are based on tips and advice when navigating the workplace as an intern, we are still young which means we need to have some fun every once in a while. Indiana has some really fun activities that you can do throughout the fall. I thought I would do the research for you and create a list of everything you need to do this fall.
Youâre welcome in advance.

Internship Advice From The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Panel
In June, interns from around the state attended Indiana INTERNnetâs first engagement event of the summer. Interns came together at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis to network, explore, engage in a personal development seminar, and hear from a panel of past and present Childrenâs Museum interns.
Panelists shared their stories, while attendees asked questions regarding career paths and entering the workforce.
The future
One of my biggest takeaways was that itâs okay to not know what you want to do. Taking everything one day at a time was a large focal point that the panelists hit on. They all spoke of their past experiences and how they got to where they are today.
It was interesting to hear the different ways they wound up at the museum. Something they had in common: All had reached a point where they had no idea what they wanted to do or where …

Indiana INTERNnet: When will you be graduating and why did you pursue a degree in journalism with a minor in digital media?
Gabriella Moline: I will be graduating from Butler University this upcoming May. Iâve always loved to write and have a passion for telling stories, which made me pick journalism as my major. As …
How Important is Networking, Really?
College students hear it again and again â network, network, network! However, building and maintaining professional relationships is often not high on a studentâs list of priorities. The thought of initiating a conversation can be intimidating. Even once introductions and connections have been made, it is difficult for individuals to keep in touch. Schedules are typically overflowing with academic, financial, and personal responsibilities, which does not leave a lot of room for attending networking events. It can be easy to put off networking and ignore event opportunities, with the hopes your schedule will be less full later. That is not the case. Forty-nine percent of todayâs professionals say that it is difficult to maintain relationships with their network due to a lack of free time, according to a 2017 LinkedIn survey.
Ignoring networking events and failing to create connections is a much easier route, but the truth is that taking …

Indiana INTERNnet: Describe your experience with The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis (TCM). What were your favorite aspects?
Emma Fort: I interned with The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis in the STEMLab and SciencePort area as a science programs intern, where I designed a program to teach kids about medical diagnostic testing. Easily one of my favorite aspects was the wonderful people I got to meet and work with during my time at The Museum. In addition, I loved how much freedom I had on the project …

A Lesson on Personal Branding
Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2019.
Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, Iâve had the opportunity to go to many networking events. The exposure Iâve received in the âbig little townâ of Indianapolis has been instrumental in developing my professional self and making connections with influential people.
Milliner & Associates is a well-exposed company and Iâve had the ability to attend many networking events, like âForward: Branding Yourself in Your Businessâ hosted by the Indy Chamber, and Indiana INTERNnetâs Summer Intern Engagement Event at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis. While these events were completely different in formality and tone, they were about the same topic: self-branding.
The speaker of the Forward event was Trevor Yager, founder of TrendyMinds. Majoring in psychology with minors in political science and history, he wasnât really set up …
#SummerINternFun @ The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
Last Wednesday, Indiana INTERNnet and the Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis hosted an all-day professional development event at the museum. Local interns got the chance to participate in sessions including personal branding, resume review and a mentor roundtable.
Interns also had the opportunity to explore the Childrenâs Museum throughout the dayâthe Museum is the largest childrenâs museum in the country! There was a photo scavenger hunt, planetarium show, and special behind-the-scenes collections tour. In the collections tour, interns got to see a large number of items not currently on display in the museum, such as dinosaur bones, famous movie props, and vintage Barbies, to name a few.
Chelsea DuKate, founder and president of Red Envelope Consulting, conducted a personal branding seminar at the event. âEvents like this are important because it creates engagement and gives interns a viewpoint of another place to go, an experience,â she said. âIt also gives them …

Interns Enjoy Networking, Fun at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis
This week, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis to host our second intern engagement event. Several local companies and their interns enjoyed a day off of their normal work routine and networked with mentors and peers. We wanted to provide an opportunity for the students to enhance their social and professional networks, devote time to career development, and have FUN! Since the Childrenâs Museum is the âbiggest and bestâ in the world, we knew this would be a day to remember!
The morning started with professional development where students learned about the museumâs fantastic internship program. In 2012, Vault, Inc. named the museumâs internship program one of the top 10 non-profit programs for interns in the nation. In 2013, Indiana INTERNnet named The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis Employer of the Year at the annual IMPACT Awards luncheon (LINK). Many were surprised to hear the Childrenâs Museum …

Ashley Shuler: Making an IMPACT
Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nomineesâ successes.
These are their stories.
Ashley Shuler is a sophomore at Franklin College majoring in multimedia journalism & public relations and minoring in leadership. She completed an internship with The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis (TCM) last summer.
Indiana INTERNnet: You were the youngest person to take on the Public Relations Internship with TCM. Why were you looking for that challenge?
Ashley Shuler: When I got my public relations internship at the museum, I had only taken one public relations course in school. When I came back last fall, I realized my experience at the museum pushed me to be a step ahead from my classmates as a writer and as a professional. Because Franklin College has …
