Farewell from the Summer Intern!
Today is my last day as the videography and marketing intern for Indiana INTERNnet! Iâm very sad for my time here to be overâit flew by so quickly. Thanks to everyone who watched my videos, read my blogs, or just kept in touch with Indiana INTERNnet during this fun summer.
Iâve lived in Indianapolis for my whole life, but this internship has allowed me to experience some wonderful new things in my city. I got to work in the middle of downtown, spend the day at The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis as an adult (and see their behind-the-scenes collections!), network with fellow interns at the Rooftop Garden at the Fountain Square Theatre Building, spend a whole day exploring the Indiana State Fair, and more. Working in the “social generation”
âSocialâ often describes millennial interns. Plenty of studies and begrudging comments from adults note that Gen-Y can hardly take a step without tweeting about it. Rather than being born into the social media era, we grew up with it, and are therefore more likely to embrace new platforms of telling people what we are doing and with whom.
For young interns, âsocialâ must take on a second meaning in the workplace. Clearly, it is important to be friendly with coworkers, but our social media presence must evolve as well. A recent article from Careerealism (http://bit.ly/1p78WQa) boldly claims that while social media cannot replace your resume, it is an additional virtual component that employers look at.

Breakfast with Twitter, YouTube and NPR
Would you believe when I started my internship, I had never used Twitter before? Four months and thousands of tweets later, social media is one of my main responsibilities with Indiana INTERNnet. Learning by doing is a wonderful thing.
At the Millennial Impact conference in Indianapolis (#MCON13) on July 18th, I sat at breakfast with none other than Jenna Golden, a leader in Twitterâs Washington, D.C. office, along with Jessica Mason (YouTube) and Danielle Deabler (NPR). I would have never imagined I would dive into social media so deep, so fast.
Throughout the entire conference, speaker after speaker emphasized the importance of allowing Millennials input and control on projects specific to social involvement and movement. This definitely resonates with my experience at Indiana INTERNnet.

Social media â talk about a âbuzz phrase.â The mere thought of social media evokes some serious emotion from people â You either seem to love and embrace it, or you dread the thought of âtweeting,â âtipping,â or âtagging.â
NEWSFLASH! Hereâs the thing: social media is not for every person or every single thing. Well, I guess thatâs my opinion, but hereâs why: You have to actively update your presence online! Online time = real time. If youâre not willing to update and participate, you might as well stay offline.
