Description
INTERNSHIP SUMMARY: This individual will collaborate with staff members to provide and facilitate activities for campers without a diagnosis as well as those with special needs. The intern will be responsible for creating daily activities and facilitating them for the assigned participant(s) in the camp program. They will adapt activities to meet the specific needs of the participants, provide behavior management as necessary, and follow the behavior plans outlined by the Field Supervisor and Assistant Director. The intern will also maintain a safe environment and communicate effectively with parents, other staff members, volunteers, directors, and field supervisors. The primary objective of the intern will be to plan, coordinate, and teach recreational activities to both staff and campers involved in summer programming.
Responsibilities
This individual will gain knowledge and understanding of summer camps, Indiana’s procedures, facility usage, and emergency protocols. They will actively collaborate with staff, supervisors, and volunteers to ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience. They will be responsible for planning and implementing activities and games that are suitable for the ages and abilities of the campers and will monitor these activities throughout the summer camp programming.
The intern will receive guidance on how to report any behavioral incidents to the field supervisor through both written and verbal communication. Responsibilities will be outlined during the intern orientation and revisited throughout the internship.
During their internship, they are expected to learn and be knowledgeable in the following tasks:
- -Attend all training sessions and facility improvement days.
- -Stay on-site during overnight camps.
- -Facilitate waterfront activities.
- - Conduct monthly safety walkthroughs and safety drills.
- -Follow all safety policies established by the agency.
- - Complete any other assigned duties as needed.
- - Maintain good attendance throughout their employment.
Qualifications
Intern Qualification Requirements
Education: Must have graduated from high school or completed a GED program. College experience in related fields is preferred.
State Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Experience: Camp experience is preferred. Attention to detail is also desirable.
Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are representative of the qualifications typically associated with this position, but are not exhaustive:
- Must maintain a proper appearance and professional behavior.
- Ability to work effectively with supervisors, co-workers, children, and the public.
- Ability to adapt activities to fully include all individuals.
- Ability to function efficiently under stress related to the position.
- Ability to work extended hours, including some overnight shifts.
- Must be capable of supervising children with and without special needs, while providing a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable atmosphere.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
- - A strong desire to work with individuals with disabilities is essential.
- Must be dependable, flexible, and responsible.
License/Certification Requirements: A driver's license is recommended.
